This is history “from the bottom-up,” bringing Benjamin Lay’s unique and amazing story as a hunchbacked, dwarf abolitionist from Essex County in England out of obscurity. Rediker shows that not only was Lay in the vanguard of the abolitionist movement, but as a compassionate humanist, a man for our own times. In addition to being a strident abolitionist, Lay was a vegetarian, an animal rights advocate, and an opponent of the death penalty. After the death of his wife Sarah in 1735, he moved into a cave near Abington, Pennsylvania, where he produced most of his own food and made his own clothing. He was well-known in the Philadelphia area – Benjamin Franklin published his book in 1738, and he was notorious among those who were the object of his wrath (namely slave-owners) at Quaker meeting houses. Lay does not seem to have been overly concerned about being a “little person,” although it seems he had to endure some mockery because of it. Nevertheless, it certainly did not curtail his radical activism. The thesis of the book is straightforward: Benjamin Lay brought together numerous strands of radicalism in his effort to condemn as the devil’s own device the institution of slavery. Lay brought religious, philosophical, working-class, abolitionist, and commoner perspectives to the table. The fact that these are all present and expressed through a single individual demonstrates, Rediker notes, that they can all be part of the same consciousness. The evidence the author presents for this is abundant. Benjamin Lay was born into the radical Quaker tradition, a third generation Quaker born in 1682 in Copford, Essex. By the time Benjamin reached adulthood, Quaker practices had toned down considerably from their early “inner light” visionary practices. Lay gave this practice new life, especially after he married Sarah Smith, who was also a hunchbacked dwarf. The spark that lit Lay’s (and Sarah’s) abolitionist fervor was a sojourn to Barbados in 1718. Two years on that hellish sugar island in the Caribbean set the couple, especially Benjamin, on his lifelong abolitionist path. The atrocities they witnessed defy description. To help alleviate the suffering, the Lays started a meeting for the enslaved, eventually calling down the wrath of the planter elite. Their subsequent campaign against slavery embraced Quaker practices from the early days of the religion. The author elaborates on three of these practices: 1) Public rants against ministers; 2) The refusal of “Hat Honor” (i.e., not removing one’s hat during the Quaker meeting); and, 3) The use of provocative street theater (Rediker opens the book with a stunning example of this). The author also shows how Lay’s working-class background allowed him to connect with enslaved people who were routinely worked to death. Lay’s work-life began as a shepherd, where he found peace in nature and the herding of sheep, no doubt a nurturing influence. He then trained as a glover, difficult and monotonous work that would have helped him identify with enslaved people who were forced to perform endless rote tasks throughout their short lives. He maintained some proficiency in this trade all of his life; Rediker notes that glover’s tools and supplies were in significant number in his will.Eventually, Lay made his way to London. There, the monotony of gloving led him to take up the life of a sailor, which brought him into contact with the diverse “motley crew” of that profession. Experiences in the world of sailors, along with his later trip to Barbados led him to de-racialize humanity. In his writing, Lay referenced the Bible, specifically Acts 17:26, which proclaims that all people are “made of one Blood.” In his 1738 book, All Slave-Keepers That Keep the Innocents in Bondage, Apostates, Lay did not use the word “race,” instead he used the less divisive word “color.” This reflected his experience with the motley crew of the eighteenth-century sailing ship. After immigrating to Philadelphia in 1732, Lay continued his abolitionist activism. Religion and politics merged with philosophy in his life-long self-education. Learning Lay’s worldview is an education not only in Quaker antinomianism, but Greek asceticism, particularly that of the Cynic philosophers. Most influential of the former was William Dell, a radical Chaplain in the New Model Army during the English Civil War. In Philadelphia, Lay had dabbled in bookselling, and Dell’s works were one of Lay’s chief offerings. In his books, which Lay highly praised, Dell advocated antinomianism – the notion that no authority is higher than that of one’s own “inner light” or inner voice. Dell also encouraged civic education for the masses in order that they, rather than a socio-economic elite, would and could wield power. These points would have been profoundly upsetting to the elites of seventeenth-century England. The library in Benjamin Lay’s cave also contained works of Greek philosophers, particularly those of the founder of Cynic thought, Diogenes, and his protegés Pythagoras, Crates, and Lucian. Rediker provides a thumbnail sketch of this worldview by defining a handful of crucial practices. These included parrhesia, the practice of speaking one’s mind regardless of how it will impact those in power. Autarkeia meant self-sufficiency without the baubles of material gain; askesis and karteria meant training in self-discipline and endurance, both mental and physical; and finally tuphos, where one severely challenged the notions of luxury, prestige, and wealth, considering them flaws in human character to be overcome. All of this, from antinomianism to Cynic philosophy was built on a commitment to treat others with love, which was to be given to all.Predictably, Marcus Rediker delved deep into the Quaker archives in both England and the U.S. He also made himself familiar with the historical literature on Quakers from this period, much of which was old ground for him. The book is written for the general public, but is erudite enough to appease the specialist. I personally loved both the book and getting to know Benjamin Lay three hundred years after his righteous fight for justice shook the Quaker world and, as Rediker argues, kick-started a Quaker abolitionist movement that, in turn, was the foundation of nineteenth-century abolitionism. During his lifetime, the Quaker dwarf was a giant in his way. His antinomianism, Cynic philosophy, and raw courage will be inspiring to those pursuing egalitarian justice today.

Brilliantly written biography of a passionate soul who was willing to do just about anything to sway his fellow Friends that Slavery was the greatest sin. While his efforts were frowned upon and caused him no end of the approbation of his community, they were memorable enough to ultimately contribute to the future abolition of slavery generations after his death.

A fascinating character, the subject of a well-written entertaining history.

With his usual graceful prose, Rediker has uncovered the life of Benjamin Lay, the first Revolutionary Abolitionist. Using a myriad of sources including Lay's writings, (and even though Lay's papers were destroyed), the author explores the reasons for Lay's strong convictions about slavery and his guerilla theater tactics in bringing to light the horrors of slavery. Explaining his radical Quakerism, his courage against wealthy elites, and vegetarianism, Rediker has captured Benjamin Lay's relevance to present day and for the future.

Very thoroughly researched history of America's first anti-slavery activist, the eccentric Benjamin Lay.I found no fault in this entertaining and well documented history.

Sent to my brother which is what I wanted on the date promised. He loved it.

It worked only on my computer but it turned out great too.

I thought this book was well written and informative. Many books of this genre become nothing more than dissertations on the topic but this was entertain and so enlightening.

This book is a good read for crafters wanting to sell their crafts online. Not only does the author give details about 17 online market places to sell your crafts, but also gives great advice on marketing strategies, selling points, and ways to entice your potential buyers. If you follow the advice in this book, there is no reason you cannot be successful in the craft world.

...but if you're already out there, or maybe have been for a while, and things are still very slow, it won't give you any new information that you don't already have. Many of these suggestions are already widely known, so there's really nothing new here, unless as I say, you're just starting to consider selling online. If that's the case, this will be an invaluable reference to guide along the way to getting your brand out there and seen by as many possible avenues and venues for commerce as possible, most of which are free.

Great resource for those thinking about starting an online craft selling business! The author explains how selling your crafts online involves sharing your story with your customers and making them feel they're purchasing something unique. She also details how you can use social media to spread the word about your crafts, and provides helpful information on the pros and cons of the various selling platforms available today. I highly recommend this book to anyone contemplating starting an online crafts business!

Glad it is on Kindle, that way I can keep it handy and with me and keep reading it. Maybe something will sink into my head eventually. Great Book.

This wasn't bad, but it covered most of the websites that most crafters are already aware of if they have spent any significant amount of time on the internet. However, it can be a good guide if you need a basic introduction to selling. Just beware that policies change, so be sure to double check the websites before you go ahead and sell your handiwork on them.

The book has lots of good information and tips on each site. If you have considered selling online it is worth your time to read it. If you are already selling on etsy or ebay you will want to read this book for other potential sites.

This delivers, as the author states in the title, 17 places to sell your crafts online....so don't get grumbly when you only see 17.The author does a pretty good job describing the features of each of these venues. She also has a nice entry section (before diving into the 17 outlets) that gives helpful tips to selling online.

My impression of the book is that this is a knowledgeable and experienced marketer, and the information she shares will be very helpful to anyone wanting to start selling their crafts and products on line. I was familiar with some of the sites suggested, but not all of them. The book will not take long to read, and I'm sure the reader will get some good pointers along the way.

Rooted: The Hidden Places Where God Develops You, by Banning Liebscher

Review

“So often our culture encourages us toward the quick-fix solution or shortcut to whatever it is we have our hearts set upon. But with the deep things of God, there’s likely no drive-through version or fast-track approach. His ways are higher than ours—and they are often slower too. My friend Banning’s brilliant book is such a timely reminder of how over time we can develop deep roots in Christ, and how these various roots then become the foundation for a life of lasting impact.” —Matt Redman, songwriter, UK “So it’s about time we have a book from Banning Liebscher, after his years of leading the Jesus Culture movement and gatherings of hundreds of thousands of young leaders around the world! Banning hits the jackpot with this new book on identity, purpose, and calling—a much-needed and timely message and a challenge for all leaders. Rooted reminds us that leaders must not only embrace the process of becoming who God has called us to be but actually love it too!” —Brad Lomenick, past president of Catalyst and author of The Catalyst Leader and H3 Leadership “Banning takes us back to the basics in this brilliant, simple book. Rooted is a gift to an entire generation that could otherwise easily forget or, worse yet, never hear the foundations for a distinctive Christian life.” —Gabe Lyons, Q founder and author of Good Faith “This foundational concept of being rooted is so timely for our culture. Strong winds will come at us and want to take us in every direction, but only the trees that have deep roots will stand when these winds blow. It’s our unseen self that truly is our strength. I highly recommend anyone to dig deep into these pages. Thank you, Banning, for such an important book for our days.” —Chris Tomlin, singer and songwriter “I’ve been doing life and ministry with Banning Liebscher for more than fifteen years. I’ve watched him live out the message that is his new book, Rooted. I’ve watched as Banning has continuously surrendered his life to God, devoted himself to prayer, served the Church, and intentionally moved toward relationships and challenges within community. He is certainly a leader who has stepped out in faith, allowing God to develop deep roots in his life. I have personally been challenged by Banning’s uncompromising trust in God and commitment to being strongly rooted in Him. The message of Rooted is a timely and prophetic message this generation needs to hear. In an age where everything is so attainable and we are all encouraged to dream big, it is so important to understand the cost of what God calls us to. It’s easy to dream and have vision, but to surrender our lives in trust to God and to allow Him to develop us from the inside out takes tremendous courage and strength. But it is possible and so incredibly important! If you are in it for the long haul, if you want to be able to sustain the dreams God has put in your heart, if you want to bear fruit that will last, this is the book for you!” —Kim Walker-Smith, president of Jesus Culture Music and Jesus Culture Publishing “This book connects with my soul! Amidst the highs and lows of life, my heart longs to be grounded in Christ. To be rooted in His truths. To be reminded that before God can work through us, He must do a work in us.” —Kyle Korver, professional basketball player for the Atlanta Hawks “Few men in our generation have shaped the songs we sing, the places we gather, and the spiritual atmospheres we encounter, like Banning. In his book Rooted, it’s easy to see his gift for practical lifestyle leadership. Banning’s words have a profound undercurrent to push you into developing spiritual integrity. Many of us are looking for a front-row seat to an honest and real conversation about what it’s going to take to go the distance. Rooted is a resource you want to have close throughout the years. It’s a must-read book!” —Havilah Cunnington, director of Moral Revolution and founder of Truth to Table Ministries “Few voices of this generation are qualified to both biblically and practically detail the process through which God roots us into our purposes. One of those voices is undoubtedly Banning’s. In his new book Rooted, Banning expertly engages the slow-motion button and give us powerful step-by-step insight into how God develops us to be who He has willed for us to be! Great read!” —Chris Hill, senior pastor of the Potter’s House of Denver “Banning is a general to the modern generation. He has great insight into discipleship and raising up a generation. This book will impact and empower you to live a life of greatness. I thoroughly recommend this book to you.” —Russell Evans, founder and director of Planetshakers “In every generation a heart comes along that beats so loudly for God, the sound is heard around the world. Banning Liebscher possesses this kind of heart—a heart whose soil continues to be tilled, watered, tended, and tested by fire—producing lasting fruit that nourishes the nations. In his book Rooted, Banning takes the enormous fruit of his own life and puts it directly into the hands of each reader, practically walking you into a life so rooted in intimacy and wisdom, it can thrive in every season.” —Christa Black Gifford, speaker, songwriter, and author of God Loves Ugly and Heart Made Whole “Rooted, the latest book by Banning Liebscher, is both intensely practical and wonderfully profound. I’ve had the pleasure of watching Banning become what he has written about—a man deeply rooted, who bears much fruit. His life in God is rich and real. For this reason, God is using him to transform the lives of countless people around the world. Learning to embrace God’s process in our lives brings us to a place of rest, where trust becomes a natural expression of our relationship with God. Rooted is sure to have great impact on all who read it.” —Bill Johnson, Bethel Church, Redding, California, and author of When Heaven Invades Earth and Defining Moments “Finding your identity in Christ is so important in today’s world. Rooted gives you the fundamental skills to guide you into being fully grounded and established in Christ, producing fruit that lasts. This book shows us that when we are fully rooted in Christ, we are positioned to influence the world around us.” —Luke Ridnour, thirteen-year NBA veteran “Everyone champions accomplishments, but not many people champion the journey. I love Banning’s take on how to embrace the journey and trust God on your way to enduring fruit. This book will help you redefine what success looks like in your life. It will give you keys to help you lean into the Lord when you are in process or feel far from your destination. And you will find yourself getting built up and learn how to enjoy the different seasons of life.” —Kelly Clark, Olympic gold and two-time bronze medalist in snowboarding halfpipe “In order to fully achieve all that God has called us to do in our life, we must know our God-viewed identity! I believe Banning does that in Rooted by taking us through David’s life and showing us how engaging in high-trust intimate relationships with God and community will allow us to truly serve others in a way that people will see Jesus and be impacted by Him.” —Jeremy Affeldt, retired Major League Baseball pitcher, three-time World Series champion, and author of To Stir a Movement “Many Christians struggle with the illusion of choice, believing there are multiple paths to purpose and passion. In Rooted, Banning invites us on a journey down the narrow path that defines the process of becoming fruitful in our service to Christ. You will find this path to be both practical and biblical, one that defines terms like serving, humility, and community. A legacy is a history worth repeating; Rooted equips and encourages us to embrace our true calling, following Jesus and living a legacy that produces everlasting fruit.” —Lyle Wells, author and speaker

I can't begin to tell you all the perfection in God's timing, bringing us to Jesus Culture Sacramento late last year, and most recently the release of our Pastor Banning's book 'Rooted'. At the beginning of April our family lost the youngest of our three kids, our sweet two year old baby boy Carson Isaiah Young. We are deeply saddened by this sudden and tragic loss, but for us it was not the end of our world, but a significant milestone of a much bigger process and journey that God has been walking through with us.Your journey is not over, and God has new things he wants to reveal to you daily. It's not a sprint, but a marathon. He's wanting to run the race by your side and with you along the way. Allow Him to do the hard work of gardening and tending to the hard areas in your life, to properly establish the root system that will be able to bear fruit. Thanks to Amazon Prime, I received Banning's book on release day and read through it in a single afternoon. I couldn't put it down! Here's a excerpt that really spoke to me, but you'll have to read the whole book for yourself!"Nothing is worth more to God than our faith. It's what pleases Him, and He loves to put us in situations where we can please Him. He also loves to put us in situations where WE get to experience and see that OUR faith is GENUINE. Consider the following passage: In this you greatly rejoice, though now for a little while, if need be, you have been grieved by various trials, that the genuineness of your faith, being much more precious than gold that perishes, though it is tested by fire, may be found to praise, honor, and glory at the revelation of Jesus Christ. (1 Peter 1:6-7)In those moments when we feel like we don't have anything more, God says... You're in a great situation! You're in the fire, but it means that you're about to find out that your faith is genuine. You can't find that out when everything is going great for you. You can only find that out in the fire. And that's more important than any good that perishes, any money you could ever get.Tested, proven, genuine faith comes when we let God lead us into weakness. That is a reason to rejoice!" -Banning Liebscher (Exclamation added by me)If you're wondering where God is in the middle of your journey or personal struggle, or why He allows us to walk through difficult situations, I'd highly recommend reading this book! It's so encouraging to be part of a family that embraces the process, instead of assuming that everyone needs to be righteous and perfect today. In reality, much of the time we are just walking through our own brokenness and insufficiencies to be who He called us to be.Be encouraged and know that He is good.- Dane Young

It's quite amazing the timing of this book coming into my life. About 2 days before receiving this book in the mail I was talking to my husband how I feel like how I must have missed it, I told him, "I'm 31 years old, have 4 children, still working on my college degree. I know being a Mother is a huge calling, but I'm eager to walk in the fullness of the call of God on my life. When will that happen?" You see, I had fallen prey to the lie of the enemy that said, where you're at is insignificant, and look over there at this other girl who is in her 30s, look at all the impact she's having. Lies, all lies. So, 2 days later I received the book, and basically cried through chapters 1 and 2, as I felt Jesus come in close and breathe truth over those lies. I encountered Jesus in the sweetest way possible while reading this book. I don't think I've ever read a book that has hit so close to home in my heart as this one....and I read a lot. I basically loved every word written in this book. It's really rare to read a book that moves you heart and soul, aside from the Bible; this book is more than just words on a page. There is so much healing in this book, and profound truth on its pages. This is a book that needs to be read, and re-read until it gets into your heart, "God is trying to grow you right where you're at." Banning communicates in a way that feels as if your sitting right next to him as he shares his heart with you. It's easy to see that you're reading his heart on every page. Get the book. It will change your life.

I recently discovered I knew God was able, but I doubted if He was willing. What was stopping Him from delivering on the promises and dreams He had so clearly put in my heart? Why am I still waiting? No sooner had I admitted I had a problem with the way God was doing things (I'm sure we both got a big laugh over that) I discovered 'Rooted' at 2AM as I failed to sleep with these challenges circling in my mind. This Book answered the very issue I was having. It turns out God is growing intimacy and dependence on Him in my life - and the vulnerability to accept that I still have a lot of growing to do if I want to last and survive my own plans, let alone His blessings. This book is very clearly written, with no jargon or convoluted metaphors. It shoots straight and tells you to grow deep roots to be strong enough to do the life God has for you. But if you think you know what the book is all about, you like me, will be surprised how many simple but timely points keep emerging as you read. It's like having the plank removed from your vision. Save yourself some sleepless nights and buy this book.

I enjoyed this book a lot. It showed me, that none of my issues with faith and patience, are not mine alone.Everyone goes through similar situations. And we grow in faith, as we trust, that we are where we are supposed to be at all times, that God uses everything we go through, for our best. Allow him to grow your roots in the soil of service, community and in the deep place spent alone with Christ.I am grateful, that he keeps drawing me closer into his heart of hearts, the more I learn to trust him with all that concerns me.May you keep trusting him, through the process of pruning and rooting you more and more in his presence.Amen

A lot of people who give this book negative reviews claim that the author probably didn't do it. But let's for argument sake say he did succeed in doing it, that he made 4 to seven million dollars in two years or so. That still doesn't mean his system will work for you or anyone else. Unless it is completely automated, the system really depends on the individual trader. I'm not going to write my strategy word for word in a book and try to sell it, even though I could tell all my trades, but it's my system, and I honestly don't want someone else to have it. I've shared it with my mother, a close friend I've had since high school and into college and they both had success but nothing like my success, why, because, it's not their system, and they can't get the flow of it.So even if what Michael Parness says is true, it doesn't really matter, the market conditions were different, he tailored the system for him, and if you acted just like him, you still wouldn't have the major success he has most likely, because you'd be just copying him, and you can't be as good as the original. That's the problem with guru systems, and people get angry when they don't work out and call it a fraud. I don't think he's trying to defraud people, I believe Michael Parness is really trying to help people make money and help himself make more of it--he was always a salesman, but that doesn't change the fact that there's nothing wrong with the system, except that the system isn't yours.

I like the guy. I enjoy watching his infomercials, and the book is entertaining. His writing style is refreshingly down-to-earth, humorous, and somewhat motivational.I want to point out that this is NOT a book on daytrading, it is on swing-trading. The only mention of any intraday trading is "fading the morning gaps" which is only passingly mentioned in the book, not even really described. Years ago I saw on his infomercial where he was asked if his material was about daytrading and his reply was a firm "No! Too risky!" Judging by the column in Kiplingers a couple months ago it would seem he has changed that stance, as that writer had participated in his service that advises fading the morning gaps. For years he has sung his mantra of "Trend trading." It's a branding thing he is doing, inventing the term and associating it with himself. Good marketing, no doubt. But he uses the term "Trend" in a different way than everybody else in the trading world. To him it means the trend of a certain perceived catalyst that is expected to move a stock's price rather than the actual price movement of the stock. For example, stocks that are expected to have a positive earnings announcement have a "trend" of upward movement the weeks prior to the announcement. The first issue I have with the book is a minor one and has been pointed out by other reviewers: The "trends" he speaks of just don't work. Maybe they did at one time, as David Nassar has written about trading earnings whisper numbers in the past as well. But they don't work now. Let's review:*FADING THE MORNING GAPS - As an active daytrader I heavily advise against this. If you are going to trade the opening minutes on volatile issues you are going to get seriously chopped up. This is pure gambling and you will take some large losses. Now, if you wait 15 minutes or so until they break the opening range, you might have something. In fact I do this myself. But I have found by experience that the stronger trade is always in the direction of the morning gap, not against it. In fact some of the best trade setups are those that start to fade the gap, find support or resistance into the gap a ways, and then move back in the direction of the gap. Some of those run the rest of the day directionally.*EARNINGS ANNOUNCEMENTS - during the bull market when Waxie turned $30,000 into $2 million I'm sure this worked great. Upcoming earnings announcements these days have little or no affect on a stock's direction in the weeks before the announcement. This is debatable, and I can't prove it, but nobody can prove otherwise either. Looks pretty random to me.*STOCK SPLITS - same deal, upcoming splits do not cause a stock to run up unless the market itself is running up. No help here.*IPO PLAYS - good luck with these. Lockup periods, insiders allowed to sell dates, etc., the early days of IPO trading are highly speculative and I have seen no evidence that anything that happens with them acts as a tradable catalyst.*SECTOR SYMPATHY PLAYS ON NEWS - OK this actually works, but absolutely no information is given on how to go about finding and trading them. And what time-frames to trade them in is not even touched upon. It's an empty concept. My bigger problem with the book is that it completely lacks substance. In the author's rebuttle below he states that "...if the rules are followed you WILL make money." That's great news! It sure would have been nice if any of these rules were included in the book. There are none. I guess we are supposed to buy the $5,000 package to get the rules? So it's really basic stuff with no real details. A better title for the book would be "Trading with Dick and Jane." Hey, maybe I'll write that one![...]

I'm watching these markets and trading them for 20 years -- this is the best book ever written on trading. Period ! I've read them all !!

I am disapointed by the reviewers here who slam Parness' book when they obviously haven't read it, or for judging it for what it was never meant to be about. It's not a nuts and bolts book about trend trading. That could be outdated soon after the book went to print if the trends change. Instead, it is a real-life book about how to turn YOU into a day trader, by recognizing some universal psychological traps we all face, and others which affect only some of us to varying degrees. Reading about his costly mistakes in the Nasdaq bubble hit pretty close to home, and I needed to learn how NOT to repeat them myself. This book accomplished exacly that, so it was well worth the price. And I bought it used, so it came without the silly dust cover. And for the person who slammed him and his trading tapes--I bought them too (only because they had a $ back guarantee!), and I am very impressed. I don't mean to give the guy a free plug here, but someone else dumped on him and his trading system, and I just want to set the record straight. I am making money with it. Not a fortune, but a very nice side income. Do I take losses sometimes? Yes. But this book tells you, both technically and psychologically (which is by far more important for trading newbies) how to limit losses for an overall profit.Anyway, you might not like Parness' style or his overuse of the word ka-chingos, but this book is perfect for the semi-experienced buy and hold investor who wants to learn how to make money, limit losses, and trade on margin without losing your shirt. There are plenty of quality technical books out there by overeducated Wall Street types, but this one is written by a regular guy, which helps its readability.I really enjoyed this book, mostly because his section on every investor's financial deathwish was so dead-on accurate. Good luck, and good trading!

OK!

A good read. A lot of self help style chapters, but a good read if you need the motivation.

Excellent quality product, delivered when promised.
