The “Legend of the Cross” gives us the story of the three seeds given to Adam’s son Seth so that Adam maybe restored to paradise and the journey those three seeds took from tree to the cross that Jesus died upon.As a Christian I was unfamiliar with this story but I fell in love with it. The author is a remarkable storyteller capturing the very essence of this time honored tale combining three legends into one outstanding children’s story. The illustrations are beautiful giving the reader the feel of stories of King Arthur or even the “The Chronicles of Narnia” by C.S. Lewis. Perfectly matched by adding pictures and story together makes for an excellent book that I didn’t want to end. As I am sure any child will become caught up in this amazing story and will want read again and again especially for a wonderful bedtime story.

A delightful telling of this beautiful story, the illustrations are worth the entire book. The combination of the author and illustrator are a perfect match. Belongs in every church library also.

great read

Reading this to my 5-year-old, even I learned something about this beautiful relic. The illustrations are also captivating for young and old.

Beautifully illustrated. Lovely for the 7 year old and up.

I was hoping for a story that was based on the biblical accounts. It is beautifully illustrated, but the kindle version is missing words. All in all, I was not satisfied.

The Legend of the Cross, by Dr. Chrissi Hart, illustrated by Niko Chocheli, is a retelling of a legend of the origin of the wood of the holy cross of Christ. The legend tells the story of the wood from its original planting to its use as the cross of Christ.According to the legend, seeds from Paradise were given to Seth, when Adam was dying; he placed them in Adam’s mouth at his burial, and the seeds grew into a three-branched tree. Throughout Old Testament times, the tree grew: it survived the flood in which Noah and his family floated in the ark; King David sat under its branches to compose; and finally, Solomon had it cut down for use in building the temple. However, because the wood kept changing sizes, it was not used for the temple and, in fact, became a footbridge. The Queen of Sheba, when she visited King Solomon, was enlightened as to the future of the wood and, herself, venerated it and refused to cross the river on it. She instead waded to get to the other side.Eventually the wood was tossed aside in a deep pit. The pit miraculously filled with water, and became the pool of Bethesda, where many people were healed when the Archangel Raphael would come and stir the water with his staff. The wood remained in that pool for many years, finally surfacing on the day of Christ’s crucifixion, when a Roman soldier spotted it and deemed it fitting for a cross: the cross of Christ. Christ’s work on this cross has pointed us all to heaven; to the way of God.And so, the legend states, “the three seeds of hope that once grew on Adam’s grave show each of us the narrow path back to the garden of Paradise.” (p. 27)This legend developed in the 12th century. Mr. Chocheli’s illuminated-manuscript-like illustrations beautifully and appropriately illustrate the story. Realism is mixed with fantasy in his unique art style, as is iconography. All three pair well to communicate the story in the historical context in which it was written. Unfortunately, printing has somewhat subdued the glory of the original colors, however, only one who has seen the originals would notice. The illustrations, as printed, are beautiful; and their subdued color communicates the somberness of the legend. Appropriately, the brightest colors in the illustrations are those used at the birth and resurrection of Christ. The word usage and storytelling style of the book may be difficult for young children to comprehend, but the detail in the illustrations offers a variety of things for them to observe. Older children with a good biblical background will see how the pieces of Old Testament history fit together with the legend of the cross, and appreciate the interplay between the two. The story lends itself to inter-generational discussion about the cross and its significance in Christian history and life.Dr. Hart and Mr. Chocheli have once again collaborated to create a beautiful work of art for the glory of God and for the growth of His Church.

There is yet another wonderful addition to the world of Christian literature for children! Author Chrissi Hart and fine artist Niko Chocheli have produced a mesmerizing tale of the journey of the cross of Christ. From the Gates of Paradise and Adam’s grave the cross travels through the centuries and eventually finds a place here and now as a symbol of hope. Simply but lyrically told, children will be fascinated by this unique story. Older children will be especially entranced by the visual storytelling that comes to life through the artist’s masterful use of shape, line and color. As in his other illustrated books, Chocheli’s vivid and detailed art provides layers of meaning and discovery for readers of all ages.--Jane G Meyer, author of The Hidden Garden.

Johnny Cash: The Life and Legacy of the Man in Black, by Alan Light

Review

“Johnny gets the spotlight in Alan Light’s The Life and Legacy of The Man in Black.” —Billboard“If you have time to read only one book on Johnny Cash this year, Light’s Johnny Cash: The Life and Legacy of the Man in Black should be the one you pick up. The stories are familiar, and many are told in other biographies, but these photos of Cash, his family, and his artifacts bring him and his music to life in a way that no other biography so far has been able to do.” —No Depression“This book is an admirable work of loving and careful research and Light handles facts efficiently. He is a remarkable scholar whose understanding of American music history runs deep. Johnny Cash continues to have a strong influence on music today, despite his passing 15 years ago. His story continues because his music still lives among the people.” —All About Jazz“Almost biblical with his deep baritone and stoic demeanor and all dressed in black, Cash was an authoritative figure, honest, serious, moralistic, and outspoken. Signed by Sam Phillips and Sun Records, the label on which Elvis Presley was getting attention by mixing black and white musical styles, Cash soon found listeners with his signature “boom-chicka-boom” sound, recording such hits as “Hey Porter,” “Cry! Cry! Cry!,” “Folsom Prison Blues,” and “I Walk the Line.” As a singer and guitarist, he introduced a darker, rawer, bleaker sound to rock ’n’ roll as well as a humanist element, speaking for the disenfranchised, in song and in life as he championed convicts, Native Americans, and the underprivileged. Music journalist Light deftly ties together all the different strands of Cash’s life, his recording career, groundbreaking television show, battles with substance abuse, marriage to June Carter Cash, and late-life revival with the American Recordings sessions. Aided by interviews with Cash and others and an abundance of photographs and artifacts, this biography will be a good companion to Robert Hilburn’s Johnny Cash (2013).” —Booklist“A profusely illustrated volume documents a celebrated performer's struggles and hard-won triumphs. Veteran music journalist Light (What Happened Miss Simone?: A Biography, 2016, etc.) offers an admiring yet cleareyed biography of Johnny Cash (1932-2003), a composer, singer, and guitar player who crossed many genres. The author draws on Cash's autobiographies, music history and criticism, interviews, and writings by Cash's family to produce an intimate and engaging portrait. By far the greatest strength of the book, though, are the illustrations: memorabilia from family archives and abundant photographs that capture Cash's undeniable charisma. A treat for the Man in Black's many fans.” —Kirkus Reviews“Working with the Cash family, Light (The Holy or the Broken) has gathered hundreds of never-before-seen photographs, lyric sheets, posters, and other artifacts from the Johnny Cash archives to produce this stunning and lavishly illustrated biography of the Man in Black. Light’s rich collection of photos and narrative bring Cash to life.” —Publishers Weekly“There can never be another Johnny Cash. With close-up images and the big-picture story, this book offers new insight into the life of an American hero.” —Sheryl Crow“This resonant book offers far more than an overview of Johnny Cash’s life and legacy: it gets to the very essence of who he was and what his life and music mean. Light’s text reads beautifully and stands as an ideal complement to photos that inspire reveries about the works and days of this extraordinary artist.” —Anthony DeCurtis, author of Lou Reed: A Life“‘Johnny Cash was like Abraham Lincoln to me,’ John Prine once said. We all agreed, though if Prine had said the same of Elvis or Sinatra, we wouldn’t have, because it wouldn’t have made a damn bit of sense. But with Cash it did. He was a man, an idea, a morality, a way of looking at the world. Though wrapped in contradictions, Cash always stood tall, like he’d come out of the soil, one of nature’s inevitabilities. This book gives us an intimacy with the man. And that’s an accomplishment worth celebrating.” —Warren Zanes, author of Petty: The Biography

Bought this as a birthday present for a friend who is a huge Cash fan. This book came shrink wrapped so I was unable to view the inside of the book prior to my friend opening it, but the cover was beautiful. After my friend unwrapped and opened it, I was able to see the quality of the book. The photographs inside are great. It’s nice that the pages of narrative are broken up with this candid photos from the Cash family archives. As for the book itself, my friend said it’s great. He’s read Cash’s biography more times than he can count and he said it was nice to see the story told in a different way. He highly recommends this to any Cash super fans.

Product arrived quickly. It was in great shape with a shrink wrap cover over this hard cover book. The book has a lot of photos. Price was very good in comparison to other offers I have seen. This will be a great Christmas present.

nice book

Christmas gift haven’t read it yet

This is a good marriage of biography and memorabilia. It's a standard coffee table book--lots of pictures, some very famous, but many not seen before--personal family pictures from family photo albums--interspersed with photos of liner notes, letters, etc. with a basic biography of Cash's life winding throughout. Each chapter covers a set time frame and is named with a Cash song (One Piece at a Time, Flesh and Blood, The Man Comes Around, etc.) My favorite feature was a spotlight section at the end of each chapter that did a deep dive into some aspect of Cash's life (his religiousness, his advocacy for Native Americans, his relationship with June.) The general biography really doesn't reveal anything new on his younger life--if you've read any other biographies on Cash or his autobiographies or saw the movie, you probably already know all this. But the spotlight sections provide a more in depth look in these areas. I had no idea that the great love story of Johnny and June had some rocky times that nearly led to divorce, or how truly important the cause of Native Americans was to Cash.I also really enjoyed the final chapters about his working relationship and collaboration with Rick Rubin (the video for Hurt is one of the best videos ever made.) There is a lot of mythologizing about Johnny Cash and his younger life story is pretty well know. This part of his later life is not as well known and so I really enjoyed learning more about that. The book is well sourced, with interviews with Cash's children and various collaborators through the years. It also draws on interviews with Cash before he died and throughout his life.I received a B&W unfinished proof of the book to review so I imagine the final product is probably a little more polished with some color pictures (though the full black and white treatment gives it a sort of haunting air that seems fitting for a biography of the Man in Black.) My one complaint is that the font it tiny! And somehow the Spotlight sections have font that's even tinier that they font used int eh rest of the book. Lol. Get your reading glasses out!

I enjoyed this book immensely. Once I started reading it, I found it hard to stop. The writing by Alan Light achieves the perfect balance of a chronological account of Johnny Cash's life, career analysis, mythmaking, and mythbusting. Along the way are tons of interesting photographs and a few interludes about themes in Cash's life and music.Johnny Cash led a fascinating life and created numerous classic songs and albums. More than anything else, I associate him with his famous prison concerts at Folsom and San Quentin. After that, I think of his late career resurgence, first in his cameo on U2's Zooropa and then of course his American Recordings series. He has a larger than life persona and seems almost like a force of nature. With his deep voice, his extensive catalog of songs of love, God, and murder. His life and music is thoroughly American in a "country" and "folk" tradition. One strength of this biography is that, even as it pulls away some of the myths and falsehoods, Cash comes away as no less of a giant.I love when Alan Light pulls away the veil to reveal Cash as a human being who struggled with drugs, fidelity, and honesty. This book exists for fans, but it doesn't talk down to us or try to pretend Cash was perfect. He's fascinating in his imperfections, and in the integrity he showed when trying to be a good man and follow his beliefs, speaking out for oppressed people and singing of the virtues of faith and family. You don't have to be religious to be moved by Cash's religious songs. The writing is well balanced, and I read it quickly without feeling like I was losing out on details. The author is knowledgeable and is clearly a fan of the musician, so any criticisms of him never come off as judgmental or mean-spirited. The focus is on the events of Cash's life and career, not gossip or revealing dirt on the man. Johnny Cash is a towering figure in music, and this book adds wonderfully to his legacy. I think any fan would be thrilled to add this to his or her collection.
