I’m Fine and Neither Are You is a thought-provoking, timely novel that takes a deep look into relationships between friends, between spouses, and between parents and children. Penny is the primary breadwinner and caretaker of her family, hiding resentments by acting as if all is right in her world. But an unexpected tragedy causes Penny to take a hard look at her life, her marriage and her job with clearer eyes and a promise to herself to be more honest about her own feelings. The characters in this book are so well-written...complex characters who will connect with readers on so many levels. This story will cause readers to think of their own relationships...relationships, like the ones in the book, are messy and complicated, and they are portrayed in this book with insight and honesty. My emotions were taken for a ride while I was reading this book, a ride complete with ups and downs, bumpy roads, twists and turns.

I was so looking forward to reading this novel until I read the review that flagrantly and all too nonchalantly spelled out THE most important plot point. How did Amazon miss that? Disappointed but still curious I dove in. It was no stretch to relate to Penelope but I felt that the author was truly lazy by using bathroom humor to relate to her children. In almost every chapter there appears this lazy and unoriginal crutch-it is common and ugly. And, beneath this author's reputation. The ending was crystal clear - but, no worries, I will never tell. All in all, it was just another attempt at “Big Little Lies.” Quickly and easily read earns it 3 stars but I wouldn't recommend choosing it over Gillian Flynn or Liane Moriaty.

"How are you?"How often are we asked that question each day? And each time, how often do we automatically say "fine." Even if your world is crumbling, your marriage is crumbling, your health is questionable, your kids are driving you crazy, how often is the answer simply "fine?"Odds are, if you're like most people, the answer is fairly often. Camille Pagan's "I'm Fine and Neither Are You" addresses this in a real-world, often-humorous, but very relevant way. The book is told through Penny's perspective. Penny is a mom in her late 30's, married ("happily" is in question), with two elementary-school aged children. She works full-time (beyond, given the number of hours she puts in) and makes good money ("happily" is also in question). This is important because her husband has been freelance writing, and not bringing home his share of the bacon. When her best friend dies suddenly, Penny is forced to look at her life and what is really going on. She has to learn how to confront people, situations, and herself. Because taking a long, hard look at your own life isn't easy and it certainly isn't pretty. She needs to figure out what makes her happy in order for everyone else to be happy. This book is great for anyone dealing with middle age, marriage, or just trying to find their own happiness in a real way.

I can't say enough good things about this book. It is open and honest, it makes you root for Penny and Sanjay. It breaks your heart and still manges to make you feel good.Penny's epiphany that she can change her life may have been the best thing that ever happened to her. I love how supportive Sanjay was when it came to working on them. Jenny's death may have been that catalist for setting it all in to motion but I love that Penny found her way.I feel that so much of this book is important. It talks about addiction, family, honesty, love, doing the right thing. Camille Pagán was able to write about so much and do it well in what I feel wasn't really that long of a book. Maybe that was just because I couldn't put it down.I highly recommend this book to all women and mothers.I received an ARc from NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing in exchange for an honest review.

I am an older woman so I've been through many of the things the main character in this story was experiencing. I had a harder time in many ways, but I never had to be sold support of the family, so I can't really fault her. All in all, a good tale and well told.

I was so excited to see the author as a selection for March's First Reads. I have read other works by Camille Pagan and was eager to read her latest work. I was not disappointed. In this book, the author deals with the current opioid crisis as well as the issues and pressures of being a working spouse and parent. I thoroughly enjoyed this book- you will too!

Showed promise, but it was ultimately boring....I kept reading because I felt like something important was going to happen. It never did. I couldn't like any of the characters. Dragged on, ended all wrapped up in a perfect little bow (kind of unrealistic and unrelatable). Disappointing.

A tragedy sends a shockwave through Penny Ruis-Kar's life, and what were narrow fissures in her relationships become gaping chasms. Given that her mantra is that everything is unequivocally fine, how will she find a way to make her world whole again? She decides upon radical honesty as a courageous prescription for an ailing marriage and a fraught worklife. And in telling this story, Camille Pagan's own radical honest is the key to its success. The portrayal of Penny and Sanjay's marriage is as unflinching as any I have read, and that's exactly why it works. No fairytales here, just real struggles, awkward memonts, touching insights, and plenty of humor to ease the pain.Pagan has boundless compassion for her stumbling, striving characters, and you will, too. Wise, entertaining, and big-hearted, I'm Fine and Neither Are You is as nuanced as a marriage, and equally as worthwhile.

I have read numerous translations of the classic Tao Te Ching by Lao Tzu over the years, but this text translated by D.C. Lau is one of the very best I have read. Lao Tzu is considered the founder of “Taoism” and lived in about the same time frame as Confucius. There is an excellent introduction written by D.C. Lau which provides some insight into China at the time Lao Tzu taught his Taoist philosophy. This 192 page paperback book is organized as follows: Lao Tzu book one and book two. List of passages for comparison, and in the appendices it covers the problem of authorship and the nature of the work. There is also a chronological table and an excellent glossary section. This is book is not an easy read; however, it is a volume that should be studied in sections to obtain the most benefit from this text. Nevertheless, this is a classic in philosophical literature and should be read by anyone who desires to be educated in Asian Taoism. The parables are sometimes like philosophical puzzles which force you to think more deeply on the subject matter. As someone who has been involved in the Asian martial and other classical arts most of mylife, I found this book a very interesting read.Rating: 4 Stars. Joseph J. Truncale (Author: The Samurai Soul: An old warrior’s poetic tribute).

I first read the Tao Te Ching in college. Somewhere along the line I lost that copy so I decided to pick up this one (especially since it had such high reviews). This copy seemed much different than the one I read years back. And I am not just talking about the author's choice to use female pronouns as well as male pronouns in his version (incidentally - how close can one get to awareness of Tao if one allows oneself to get hung up on seeing "He" rather than "She" in the teachings?).In one portion of this "tao de ching: A New English Version" ("Version" is the key word) the author chooses to translate "When the Tao is absent in a country,/ war horses are bred on the borders" to "When a country goes counter to the Tao, Warheads are stockpiled outside the cities". This author has written his "modernized" version of the Tao Te Ching and he claims to have been open in this fact, supposedly by him using the terms "A New English Version". When one reads further one in the notes you see the author admitting he does not even know Chinese (so his interpretation of the Tao is from other translations - and how he thinks the lines should read for poetics sake, or P.C. sake, etc).At first I thought I would not write a review on this book. But when seeing the author admit to what I had suspected it made me feel like I really got ripped off. If you are looking for a translation of the Tao Te Ching do not get this author's book. The author respects the Tao but this is not the real deal. I will be purposefully losing this book and looking for a better translation.

I had no idea what to expect of this book when It arrived. I turned it over in my hands and it was clearly very short in length, so I decided to just read a few pages while I finished my morning coffee. One and a half hours later I had finished the book entirely, along with my coffee, and I immediately knew upon completion that I would read this book many, many more times in my life.It was a highly profound, dare I say life changing read that dramatically impacted my perspective towards my own happiness and how I interact with others. Written as a collection of very short, almost poem-like chapters, often each occupying less than a single page, this book is a masterfully crafted guide to find real happiness and fulfillment in your life. It is a tome that empowers you, humbles you, and leads you around the pitfalls that so many humans fall into throughout their lives. It is not a modern self help book with life-hacks, habit forming tips, or other such articulations, but rather a fundamental, deep, and moving look at what makes up a fulfilling life.If you are someone who has discovered mindfulness, explores meditation, or ponders philosophy, then this book is, without question, a must-read.And if you are more of a go-getter. A driven entrepreneurial type who is looking more or straightforward advice on building your business, achieving goals and finding ‘success’, then I encourage you more-so than anyone else to pick this book up.It has helped me make difficult business decisions, cut through the unimportant details and roadblocks, optimize my time, and improve my relations with my clients and really everyone else in my life for that matter. It is a book for the true winners, who understand that karma is practical, and that compassion is the path to real success. It is a book that I will cherish for the rest of my life, and I feel indebted to the author and translator for bringing its wisdom into the world.

As with so many books, we endure the scholarly and erudite reviewers who claim to know which text and translation is the most recondite, the most accurate, the most true to the original. I don't know about all that. I know Lao Tsu was so important to Asian culture and life, and I know this book makes me feel whole again with each reading. I slow down, and his true words align the iron filings in my heart.Let the educated debaters go on with their "Ten thousand things" arguing about translations and meanings. They miss the point. Get this book, make some tea, turn of the incessant rattlings in your brain and the screens in your home and relax to ancient wisdom that has influenced millions of hearts and minds for thousands of years...

This book is very confusing to read because of the way its been printed. There's no uniformity; Instead of having one verse per page and then a commentary section, there's several verses on one page with different types and sizes of font throughout so visually it looks very cluttered and crammed together and it's not enjoyable to read. It looks like a cheap, self-publishing project gone wrong. It's such an important text, it's disappointing that they didn't take more care to make it more readable.

One reviewer cited alleged Christian stuff in the Almanac. So I went and looked at what she cited as evidence, because I am all for avoiding Christian references in pagan or witchcraft works. But they just do not occur in this almanac. The first the reviewer gives as evidence of supposed Christianity in the Almanac is a quote from the book by Leland (of Aradia fame), wherein a witch in 1900 gives a retelling of the story from the book of Enoch (NOT a Christian text) about the Watchers and how they taught humans various arts and married some of them. The witch quoted translates the Watchers into the Fae and spins it as British folk belief. But it is simply the story from Enoch retold from the perspective of British folk belief. It's not Christian. The next example of alleged Christianity in the Almanac that the reviewer quotes is an article about marijuana that contains a reference to Rastafarians smoking marijuana to get closer to God. This is not exactly Christian agit prop, and that is as close as the article gets to anything Christian even in passing. The final example of supposed Christianity in the Almanac is a page discussing the Star card that came from Paul Huson's book on tarot. He says that some decks depicted the Star as the star of Bethlehem. That's a historical fact, not an assertion of Christianity. And that's all that is said about it.As for there being nothing about familiars, there's an entire article about familiars in there. There are also many articles about animals as they appear in folklore, in astrology, in paganism, in witchcraft, etc. Plenty for the witch's soul here.

What an extreme disappointment. Not even 30 pages in and I can't fathom reading any more of these excerpts depicting the Lord and father as our creator and the tarot being symbolic of the birth of Jesus.... Umm WITCHES almanac? We believe in the balance of the feminine and masculine divinities, but our lean is feminine. Especially in terms of creation. Not to mention, this test is supposed to have something to do with familiars and friends and I have yet to read anything on the topic. The closest mention to anything even related to familiars was an excerpt by Ivo Dominguez on page 21 which discussed the spirituality of animals.Honestly, I only get this book anymore for the calendars and horoscope, but even the horoscope seems to get weaker every year in detail. At this rate, I can purchase the witches daily planner and get as much useful info and more with material and excerpts that are at least Pagan and Witch focused. Or did we forget who pushed paganism out of our lives to begin with.To each their own, but the witches have been done an injustice in the development of our practice to be more inclusive to Christianity and have only intern adopted the practices of Christianity. Soooo why call yourself a witch? Did you hear that you can make it whatever you want? Sure, you can... But if you miss the point of a witches beliefs then just call yourself an agnostic. That is more likely what you were looking for when you thought you'd give being a witch a try.I don't know if I can keep purchasing this.

The Witches' Almanac has always been a great source of information and the contributors are expert occultists, magicians, and witches. There's a one star review here recommending some other obscure almanac. The criticism of this review is that the Witches Almanac is somehow pandering to Christian inclusivity.Out of the 208 pages, the reviewer takes a picture of three pages with three quick mentions of monotheistic history or lore, as in single sentences, to prove their case.Let's dissect those images the reviewer posted:Tarot's The Star by Paul HusonPaul Huson mentions that the Star card is related to the Star of Bethlehem. Anyone who knows anything of the Tarot knows that the tarot (particularly the Marseilles deck which predates Rider-Waite-Smith) was strongly influenced by the Christian religion and based on religious parades called Triumphs or Trumphs in Medieval Times, which is where we get the name "Trumps" for the Major Arcana before we had the term Major Arcana. The idea that someone is accusing Paul Huson of not only being a witch but pandering to Christianity is the most laughable thing I've ever heard at best and offensive to him as a Pagan Elder. PAUL HUSON! Pick up a copy of his classic Mastering Witchcraft and you will QUICKLY see that Huson is far from promoting Christianity in Witchcraft.Marijuana - Da Ma by Ellen Evert HopmanThe reviewer posts a picture mentioning Rastafari beliefs in the Bible. What the reviewer neglects is that it's one line in a long history that Ellen is laying out regarding the religious and spiritual history of marijuana. She goes over Chinese, Egyptian, Indian, African, Japanese, Taoist, Korean history and much more. Ellen Evert Hopman is a druid. There's no way that she's promoting Christianity in her article. The Witchcraft of Dame Darrel of York by Charles Godfrey LelandThe last picture the reviewer posts is an excerpt from the classic "The Witchcraft of Dame Darrel of York" by folklorist Charles Leland. Leland was perhaps the largest influence on Modern Witchcraft, particularly his "Aradia: Gospel of the Witches" which deeply influenced Gerald Gardner and his Wicca. The fact that Leland talks about "The Father Creating" while talking about the origin of faeries, isn't a promotion of Christianity. Leland is a folklorist and anyone who knows the tiniest bit of the old faery faith and its history knows that there's a long Christian influence in those beliefs, just as there is Witchcraft whether we want to rewrite history or not to exclude it.The reviewer claims there's only ONE article about familiars. That's absolutely not true. Just skimming through the book there's AT LEAST 21 ARTICLES related to familiar spirits both as animals and as non-animal spirit companions (as per the traditional view). In other words, the one star review is bunk and the person doesn't know what they're talking about or much about witchcraft at all. Arguing against the antique writings of Charles Leland, the writings of the influential witch Paul Huson, and the druid Ellen Hopman as somehow pushing a Christian agenda is absolutely ludicrous.

I was impressed by the articles and the timeliness of the issue. (My friend, the Goddess Bastet, is assisting me in making a familiar of my ghost cat this week.) There's some thoughtful stuff in this one, if you have a familiar or are thinking of obtaining one, might be worth it to pick up a copy.

I buy one every year and keep them in my library. There is a lot of nice information that you can use from year to year thanks to the way they change the focus of the content. Great series for any Witch.

always a winner
