Review

“Superbly written and carefully documented . . . indispensable reading for anyone who seeks to understand how and why the Allies won.”—The Christian Science Monitor   “An important contribution to our understanding of World War II . . . Like an engineer who pries open a pocket watch to reveal its inner mechanics, [Paul] Kennedy tells how little-known men and women at lower levels helped win the war.”—Michael Beschloss, The New York Times Book Review   “Histories of World War II tend to concentrate on the leaders and generals at the top who make the big strategic decisions and on the lowly grunts at the bottom. . . . [Engineers of Victory] seeks to fill this gap in the historiography of World War II and does so triumphantly. . . . This book is a fine tribute.”—The Wall Street Journal   “[Kennedy] colorfully and convincingly illustrates the ingenuity and persistence of a few men who made all the difference.”—The Washington Post   “Kennedy has produced a fresh perspective on the war, giving us not just another history of an overfamiliar conflict, but a manual of technical problem-solving, written in the clearest and most compelling style, that could still prove useful to modern management today.”—The Telegraph (UK)   “This superb book is Kennedy’s best.”—Foreign Affairs   “Paul Kennedy . . . has thus achieved a notable feat in bringing a large dose of common sense, historical insight and detailed knowledge to bear in his refreshing study of what might be called the material history of the second world war. . . . This material history of strategy asks the right questions, disposes of clichés and gives rich accounts of neglected topics.”—Financial Times“Paul Kennedy’s history of World War II is a demonstration not only of incisive analysis and mastery of subject, but of profound integrity, and a historian’s desire to celebrate not great leaders but the forgotten scientists, technicians, and logisticians who gave us the tactical edge, without which the strategic designs could never have been achieved.”—Robert D. Kaplan, author of The Revenge of Geography   “Kennedy’s fine-grained analysis and suspicion of any one single cause—like cipher cracking, intelligence and deception operations, or specific weapons systems, like the Soviet T-34 tank—permit him to persuasively array his supporting facts. . . . An absorbing new approach to a well-worked field.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)   “A fresh and stimulating approach.”—Publishers Weekly

#340,158 in Books (See Top 100 in Books)

Having read a great many books of the role of technology in the Second World War I looked forward to reading this book, thinking it would add detail to that covered by excellent books like R. V. Jones' "The Wizard War," in which he described projects he worked on during the war under the auspices of the Tizard Committee, or Robert Burden's history of radar, "The Invention That Changed the World." But despite the subtitle of this book, "The problem solver who turned the tide in the Second World War," there is little or nothing on the men and women who were responsible for the great technological inventions like radar, radio navigation, landing craft and so on. In fact, much of the narrative has nothing whatsoever to do with engineering and technology, and is instead about how various political, tactical, and strategic decisions affected the outcome of the war.Where Kennedy does get into the details of the machinery of war or its creators he gets much of it wrong, like referring to legendary Supermarine Spitfire designer R. J. Mitchell as "J. R. Mitchell." It's hard to imagine how a mistake like this made it into print. In the section on the battle for the Atlantic, he states that antisubmarine rockets SQUID and LIMBO could actively search for their targets, which is not true (they were time fused) and that SQUID is still used "in vastly improved form in today's navies" which is certainly not true as SQUID was replaced by the active seeking Mk44 torpedo twenty years ago.Kennedy also suggests that the Rolls Royce Merlin engine was a copy of the Curtis D-12 (which he calls the Curtis V-12) and that Rolls Royce imported the engines to copy them. Actually the engines were imported by Fairey, later well known as the builders of the Swordfish Biplane. Regardless, the Merlin is not a copy of the D-12 but rather a much more advanced engine that was in part influenced by the D-12, as were many other European aircraft engines. He then tells a story of how an RAF test pilot suggested that the P-51 would be improved by the substitution of a Merlin engine, after which clever RAF mechanics slipped one in, the engine compartment of the P-51 coincidentally being just the right size for the Merlin. But as Peter Pugh's history of the company, "Rolls Royce: The Magic of a Name" points out, there's a good reason the Merln fit in the P-51. The Ircraft had already been tested with both the Packard and Merlin engines at Wright Field, long before any aircraft reached England. The US Army initially chose the Packard in order to simplify the supply chain but quickly came around to the choice of the supercharged Merlin once the RAF showed its superiority. In his chapter on amphibious assault, Kennedy states that the "Cockleshell Heroes" arrived at Gironde in midget submarines. What he's referring to is Operation Frankton,in which commandos were delivered offshore via submarine (not a midget submarines) and paddled folding canoes (nicknamed "cockles") into the Gironde estuary. "Cockleshell Heroes" was the name of a movie about this raid. When he finally gets around to discussing technology, Kennedy does manage to devote a few paragraphs to the specialized mine clearing and bridging tanks known as "Hobart's funnies" but never touches on the most important technological innovation of the invasions, the specialized landing craft used to deliver men and machinery to the beaches. Whole volumes have been written about the role played by these craft but they seem to have escaped the author's notice. (The Higgins boat get a one sentence reference in a later chapter.) Neither is their any mention of PLUTO, the cross-channel pipeline developed to supply the invading force with fuel. Kennedy does mention the Mullberries, the artificial harbors towed across the channel, but than says they were erected by Seabees, which is incorrect, as others note.A great many critically important scientific and engineering advances never get mentioned at all. Kennedy credits allied success in the Battle of the Phillipine Sea (aka the Great Marianas Turkey Shoot) to US aircraft superiority, but an even more important factor was the combination of radar guided antiaircraft guns firing shells equipped with radar proximity fuzes that protected the Allied ships and allowed for unprecedented success in shooting down attacking aircraft. Those same proximity fuzes were a massive force multiplier in the European theater, making US artillery far more effective than German artillery, which was impact fused, but no mention is made of this, either. There is much in the book that is both accurate and interesting, but unfortunately ths is outweighed by the scores of historic and technological errors and omissions that abound. Add to that the fact that it doesn't actually live up to its title and discuss the technology that contributed to victory or those engineers behind the technology, and I cannot by any means recommend this book. Instead, I recommend that readers interested in the technological history of WWII start with the two books I referenced in the first paragraph, Richard Rhodes' "The Making of the Atomic Bomb" and go on from there.

While Professor Kennedy professes to focus on the men–in-the-middle and engineering, too much actually focuses on the strategy, his true love. I also think his British heritage shows through many times even though he completely ignores Englishman Frank Whittle, inventor of the Allie's jet engine. While Hobart's flail tank was important, the USA sergeant who created the rhino tank won the day in terms of cutting through the bogage and getting the invading armies off the beach. Once off the beach, the Red Ball Express and their Duce-and-a-Half trucks did noble service thanks, in part, to the black drivers who receive no mention. The USA's ability to repair these trucks and have tank retrievers and repair depots is one thing that separated our mechanized forces from the Germans who could not repair their disabled tanks and used horses to an unappreciated extent. The flame-thrower tank really was the most effective weapon for winkling out the Japanese in the Pacific, and he completely neglects Harvard's role in inventing napalm both for the flamethrower devices and the instruments of Japan's "rain of ruin" from the B-29s. Generally, Harvard has chosen NOT to highlight its contributions in this matter. Kennedy might have mentioned how Churchill had a blind spot in the matter of "The Prof" {Lindeman} who took the English down a number of technical blind alleys. For instance, Englishman Bernard Lovell developed the H2S radar for target location and, at last, precision night bombing—after having to beat back Lindeman's quack science and going directly to Churchill to get a commitment to its rapid development in quantity. This radar was the first which gave accurate radar scope images of the ground and thus allowed for accurate bombing late in the war for all-weather and night situations. R.V. Jones is another example and he had the fortitude to attend cabinet meetings and confront Lindeman during the "battle of the beams" phase of The Blitz. Churchill was foolishly loyal to Lindeman but enjoyed seeing his discomfort and sided with the young upstarts from academe. The British gave such characters the nickname: boffins. This book is really for the initiated. He covers significant items in a throwaway sentence or two which may be enough for the cognoscenti but will hardly due for substance. He actually gives a fair amount of space to the torpedo problem but fails to mention the advent of Western Electric's electric torpedo and the willingness of submarine commanders to ignore torpedo orders which came from the Freemantle command {headed by the stubborn Admiral Christie who earlier commanded the Newport Station which developed the duds.} He never mentions Vice Admiral Lockwood's stunning feat of sending the USN submarines on 10,000-mile patrols. Who developed their diesel engines and who designed those boats with a Japanese war in mind {and therefore with air conditioning and powerful engines and room for an appropriate-size crew}? The submarine service's reputation for its good chow was done on the back of their refrigeration units. There is only a one-phrase mention of George Marshall's weeding out the Army's incompetent leaders, but Lockwood did it on a mass scale with the early submarine commanders he inherited. In only one sentence does he mention that the submarine forces destroyed the Japanese economy by depriving it of needed materiel. I think he does acknowledge that the Allies did to Japan what the Nazi's failed to do to the Allies in regard to submarine warfare. If ever there was a man-from-the-middle-ranks it was Cmdr. Joseph Rochefort who convinced Nimitz that Midway was the target he should set up for his ambush. Even though he was berthed in Pearl Harbor, Rochefort only met face-to-face twice with Nimitz to preserve his objectivity. He worked almost entirely through his agents on Nimitz's staff. The second meeting Nimitz had with Rochefort was to interrogate him on why he thought {despite Washington's constant carping} that Midway was the goal.MIT's radiation lab is, again, a toss away item. How did the Tizard mission come into being and which brought the cavity magnetron to the U.S.? Why was ULTRA held back until much later? Alfred Loomis's role in organizing the radar effort is a great example of Kennedy's point about the spirit of innovation. Loomis may have been a rich snob {Tuxedo Park was his development}, but he was tremendously effective in organizing the development of US radar and then selling it to Henry Stimson. He even managed to develop Loran which became a key Allied navigational aide which has been superseded only recently. One of its towers still stands on Nantucket. Surely the men-in-the-middle engineers did wonders in jump starting the U.S. aircraft industry and tank arsenals on an enormous scale in an amazingly-short time. This was both a design coup and a production feat. If ever there was an engineering project it was the Manhattan Project, but like the other items just mentioned: No or little mention. How the USA managed to organize war production and herd U.S. businessmen into cooperation would seem to be major grist for his mill, especially given the author’s introduction. One meaty and additional chapter could have done justice to almost all these quibbles. I think a somewhat labored read could have been turned into a thrilling reading experience if Kennedy had taken the time to do an additional chapter and mine the gold that the reader deserves. I believe Kennedy appears to lack the background and appreciation for such a chapter and, perhaps, a co-author would have furthered his cause immensely.

This book was a disappointment to me. I was looking for a book that would delve into topics like the use of operations research, the strategic bombing campaign survey, and the USAAF team in the Pacific that would result in the Whiz Kids of the 60's. Kennedy groups a series of Allied innovations around a group of challenges, such as winning the war in the Atlantic, storming an enemy held shore, and solving the challenge of distance in the Pacific. I think it's an interesting way to look at the war, but I think his discussion is often superficial and lacks depth. The chapters feel like a set of anecdotes strung together, and the analysis of impact and events is often oversimplified. It's an okay book, but I expected much more.

I can't get enough from this cookbook author. Everything that I have tried has been unique and wonderful. I don't have time to make them all because I keep going back and repeating the ones that I have already tried and liked!

This is our new favorite family cookbook. Every recipe I’ve made out of this has inspired family to say, “I would eat this every day.” It’s amazing. 5/5 would buy again.

The three recipes I've tried are filly to make and lack flavor. Very disappointed.

From the Back Cover

HEALTH The High Blood Pressure Solution presents a natural approach to controlling hypertension and dispels many of the myths surrounding the treatment of this silent killer. In clear, simple language, backed by sound scientific research, Dr. Moore explains how: • Hypertension is completely preventable without reliance on synthetic drugs • Artificially lowering blood pressure to “normal” levels with drugs fails to prevent many strokes and heart attacks • The vast majority of strokes could be eliminated by balancing dietary potassium and sodium • Based on the principles in this book, the entire country of Finland has reduced strokes and heart attacks 60% nationwide Dr. Moore’s approach is simple: by maintaining the proper ratio of potassium to sodium in the diet, blood pressure can be regulated at the cellular level, preventing the development of hypertension and the high incidence of strokes and heart attacks associated with it. Dr. Moore updates this edition of The High Blood Pressure Solution with a new preface reporting on the latest scientific research in support of his program. The most striking results come from Finland, where table salt has been replaced nationwide with a commercial sodium/potassium/magnesium mixture. Between 1972 and 1992, Finland saw a 60 percent decline nationwide in deaths attributed to strokes and heart attacks.Dr. Moore makes it clear that high blood pressure is only one symptom of an entire systemic imbalance. He outlines a safe, effective program that focuses on nutrition, weight loss, and exercise to bring the entire body chemistry into balance. He also includes a chapter on working with your physician to ensure that reduction of any hypertension drugs you might be taking can be effected safely. RICHARD MOORE holds an M.D. from the Indiana University School of Medicine and a Ph.D. in biophysics from Purdue University. He has been a professor of biophysics at the State University of New York at Plattsburgh and a visiting professor at the University of Vermont’s medical school. He has been active in the field of biomedical research for over thirty years.

My husband started developing mild high blood pressure. He usually ran about 120/80 but would hit 135/90 on occasion. We used the ideas of added potassium from dietary sources and it did help lower his numbers for about 3 years and kept them lower. Eventually he needed more intervention. We used the Resperate biofeedback device as well and this helped too.Eventually though he became diabetic. He was in pre-diabetic levels before this (though we did not know it at the time, as his doctor neglected to mention this) as his blood pressure started to rise. His blood pressure went to 145 on the top number at this time. He did have to take a single very mild blood pressure pill at this point at a low dose. What lowered his blood pressure the most, was lowering his blood sugar through Metformin and a ketogenic, low carb diet (which also lowered his weight by 20 lbs into a normal range) (now also wheat & gluten free per Dr. William Davis of the "Wheat Belly" series. Please read books by Jenny Ruhl, Dr. Richard Bernstein and any in the Atkins series for great advice. We stay below 50 net carbs (total carbs minus fiber) a day to be ketogenic.I still think this is a good book and that there is a lot of truth to the lack of dietary potassium (and magnesium). I just think that the sources should be lower in carbs than the sources he was using before (bananas, black strap molasseses, tomato juice). There is no denying the improvement upping the potassium made on his numbers, just be careful to choose low carb veggies and foods:-broccoli-cabbage-green beans-romaine or iceburg lettuce-squash-spinach-cauliflower-walnuts-almonds-pecansIt is not as easy to get as much potassium as it was when he ate high carb (oatmeal with 2 bannanas, 2 T blackstrap molasses for example for breakfast). For him lowering the blood sugar was the most important thing and did lower the blood pressure. He now reads about 110 on his top number with the low carb diet and the single low dose blood pressure pill.If his blood pressure ever fluctuates or tries to go higher, instead of upping his dose, we'd try to add more potassium because it did seem to help.

I was so frustrated with my doctors and their unwillingness to do anything but prescribe medicines with terrible side effects. On a beta blocker I couldn't breathe or exercise--even a flight of steps was an effort. I thought it might be stress and tried the machine Resperate but sent it back as it did nothing for me after a month. So I started reading and researching and eventually found this book, which boiled it down to one correctable problem. After only one week religiously following this program my BP dropped by 20 points. I have found my "lifestyle". And I don't have to give up meat and go vegan which Bill Clinton did and I would be willing to do if it was the only thing to improve my BP and my overall heart health.I haven't been hungry on the K Factor program but I am losing weight naturally--three pounds the first week. It's been challenging to find no-salt products but I purchased three salt free cookbooks on this site and that's been helpful. Yes, food tastes different and "flat" but I want to "eat to live".

This is a very informative and detailed book about the nature of high blood pressure and why, according to the author's view, it happens. This is a school of thought that an inbalance in the sodium-potassium exchange process occurs in the various cells in the body, including those lining the blood vessels, and causes them to constrict. His solution, based on his many years of researching this process, is that a very low-sodium, quite high potassium diet can help right the problem. He supports this by discussing the many cultures around the globe where HBP is virtually unknown because they follow such a diet. All good info. My problem with it is there are no carefully crafted studies he can come up with that proves the point definitively, other than that his associate researcher dropped his elevated blood pressure way down over a couple of years using the dietary approach. He also says, halfway through the book, that you may not experience any benefit from it at all. So I am calling this a "show me" review. I'm game and will try it to prove it one way or the other to myself as the idea of being "friended" by Big Pharma for a lifetime is not where I want to be. Once you get past some of the technical scientific info, the book is very readable and thought-provoking and this researcher has spent 40 years in the study of the sodium-potassium exchange process in the body so he knows something about the subject. Get a used copy of this book if you don't want to go full throttle. I think it's a keeper. We'll see.

I bought this book years ago and read it and then just recently bought it again... I have to say that this book really helped me with lowering my blood pressure.. Before this book I never really understood the importance of potassium.. and that the ratio of salt to potassium is important.. The book is written so that it is easy enough for a layman to understand but also gives the answers that a medical person would want. I have bought copies of this book several times and given it to others... Would defiantly recommend.

Good info about K to Na ratio. I was hoping for a discussion of how to raise that ratio but I could not find a succinct discussion.Very hostile to the concept of ketogenic diet. Much of what is suggested does not meet the low carb requirement of keto.I found it hard to accept much of what is suggested.Had I noticed it was published in 2001, I would not have spent the money.

Don't get me wrong, I really like Mr. Baldacci's novels, especially the Camel Club series, but this book is a let down for me. The plot is hard to believe, the characters are weak and the book does not flow as it should. The book is trying to build suspense, but it doesn't accomplish that. In fact, it gets bogged down with the twists and turns and you really don't know why. The situations that the two main characters get themselves into are very unbelievable and bordered on being funny. Not my favorite Baldacci book but I will keep reading his novels. I hope he gets out of this slump that he is in and gets back to the style of writing in his earlier books or improves on this new course of wrinting. The new style has potential, it just needs to be defined.

The Whole Truth (A. Shaw Book 1) is a thriller based on a real issue: that of society's vulnerability to bad information on the Internet. There have been some glaring, real examples of mis- or dis-information over the past decade, many of them in political power struggles. Of course, in the realm of thrillers, such a truism is taken to extremes to make a gripping story, and Baldacci has succeeded in doing this very well. Although this book was published several years ago, the story and writing have been crafted in a way that holds up well in today's world. On the level of entertainment, this book is top notch. The characters are diverse and interesting. The leading protagonists are appealing, though a bit stereotypical: the "good guys" to be supermen and extremely lucky while the "bad guys" are greedy, power-hungry, and terribly warped genius-types who have a fatal flaw. Baldacci blurs these stereotypes with serious calamities and character flaws for the heroes and significant victories plus a degree of sincerity for the villains. The plot is developed with plausible logic and plenty of surprises. The balance among setting, characterization, and events is excellent. An additional plus is that Baldacci has used good judgement in relegating gore, profanity, and sex to background factors that do not interfere with the telling of the story.I'd rate it 4 and 1/2 stars. Highly recommended to those who enjoy large-scale conspiracy thrillers.

I've been hooked on these David Baldacci books since someone loaned me "The Winner"Since then I've developed many favorite authors similar to this style of writing. If you're like me and love espionage thrillers and spy type books and "kneecap busting" reads then this book will appeal to you. The character A. Shaw is a real interesting and badass dude, similar in nature to the likes of Jack Reacher, Mitch Rapp, and Scott Harvath. The book has a real interesting plot and plenty of action and intrigue. I'll definitely be looking for the next A. Shaw story.

David Baldacci spins a great yarn as most of us have come to understand, but in The Whole Truth, he reaches heights unknown before. This is a thoroughly exciting tale, and he comes at you with twists and turns and redirection that leaves you panting to keep up. I've read a lot of suspense, including many of Mr. Baldacci's works, and never did I expect to find such brilliance in this story when I began reading it. It's a thriller, it's a most touching love story involving people who should be immune from that malady. Baldacci takes all of these elements and weaves a story that I will remember for a long time to come. The man's mind must work at warp speed...........it's an amazing read.A Baldacci Fan

A small group of people manipulate the world into believing that the Russians did a bad thing by using fake news articles, the internet and the media to spread the lies.I think Mr. Baldacci may be clairvoyant. Now I see where the DNC got its ideas from.(Please don't be offended by this humorous observation.)The book was great. Fast paced and cannot put down.I will read the next Shaw book and expect that it will be just as good.

Creel, a multi-billionaire weapons manufacturer, is accustomed to making things happen, one way or another. When he decides to start an international conflict which will make him richer. More important to Creel, however, is his belief that he can bring back the old ways of life, including developing a new "Cold War" which will result in continued world-wide rearmament. What he never reckoned on was A. Shaw and Katie James, a super agent for a secret American agency and a reporter, respectively. David Baldacci provides a story full of love, murder and mayhem as we follow these characters to their final confrontation. A very entertaining read.

The plot is somewhere between a romance and a suspense line. Shaw has such a confused background which drives him. He finally finds love and gives in to his new found emotion. Things look like the perfect romance book but then the bad guys kill the woman of his love. Shaw vows to retaliate by finding and killing the people responsible. A journalist who sees a story to rejuvenate her career, teams up with Shaw. Without spoiling the finale, I will mention that the reader is left to wonder about the future of Shaw and the journalist.

I was shocked at first when I saw how shamelessly and extensively Baldacci plagiarizes Lee Child. But then, Lee Child can only write one Jack Reacher novel a year, and I've read them all. So when I need a Jack Reacher fix, I read David Baldacci, or L. T. Ryan, who takes things a step further by ripping off Baldacci, who rips off Lee Child! Whew, it's dizzying. But at least they can write well, if one likes that kind of thing, which I do. Especially when I need something totally mindless and distracting.

Baldacci’s first international thriller uncovers a plot by the world’s largest defense contractor who retains a “perception manager” to convince the population and world powers that a third world war is imminent. All this is done through the internet release of lies that can be believed. Our hero loses his lady love and valiantly struggles to deal w/ the loss and to find the killers. It is a very good and exciting read.

All of these episodes are available free, search for Campbell Playhouse. But I wanted something that would play on my Echo. The titling and naming for these episodes is nearly non-existent, but it does seem to be a complete collection. They don't appear in order. Like other old-time radio, these episodes have commercials, but Campbell's Soup commercials are much better than cigarette commercials in collections like Dragnet. Some of the actors that participated include Agnes Moorehead, Jane Wyatt, Katharine Hepburn, Burgess Meredith, Helen Hayes, Mary Astor, Laurence Olivier, Walter Huston, Lucille Ball, Jack Benny.Take a look at the Campbell Playhouse wikipedia page to see what you'll be getting.Highly recommended.
