This is the second book in the series. It focuses on the impact of the workhouses on the lower classes, focusing on three individuals who spent their childhood years in one. Peggy and Frank are brother and sister, and Jane works with the nuns. In addition to their stories, the author details the history of the workhouse and how it changed over time, and what issues arose with those changes. Frank’s cancer diagnosis shows how bonded he and Peggy are and their traumatic childhood separation and Frank’s determination to provide for his sister shows a quiet heroism. Their story is complex and may be difficult for some readers. Jane also has a past in the workhouse and was friends with Peggy. She went from a bright outgoing child to a fearful, timid adult from her experiences. With some help from Sister Julienne, Jane finally finds some happiness. Sister Monica Joan also plays a key role in the story and her aberrant behavior lands her in trouble with the law.

SHADOWS OF THE WORKHOUSE is probably my favorite of the trilogy. Worth's narrative is far darker than the PBS series, and yet also richer in many ways, dotted with bright bits of humor, faith, and her unsentimental glimpses into the durability of the human spirit. She documents "near history": a world now gone, that would be forgotten except for her saving pen, which brings to life the people of two generations ago, their incredible poverty, and the incredible misfortunes that some suffered, as well as the incredible gallantry shown by others who were determined to bring help and assistance. All told in a quiet, unassuming way. Worth's account is uplifting, but not in the overly sweet way of so-called "inspirational" books (which I loathe) of today. She tells a dark story and tells it in a straightforward way, but that makes the bright lights of faith, compassion, belief in duty, all the more bright and startling. This book was a page turner for me.

I got the first book because I was a fan of the PBS series. It was darker than the series but I still enjoyed it. When this one came on sale right after I finished the first one, I got it as well.Assuming that a lot of the people who consider buying the books are doing so because they like the series, I feel compelled to warn you that this book is very much darker than you are likely expecting. I don't like to do spoilers so I'm not going to get into details. I'll just say that while the series isn't always lighthearted and can be pretty gritty, this is much darker than the series gets. I'd say it even crosses over into disturbing in parts.It's well written and I wouldn't tell you not to read it but I would advise caution if you're thinking of getting it as a gift for someone.

I rarely end a book in tears, but this one really got to me. It raises 1000 questions about the good of social programs and public works, as well as the evils. Yes, evils. The epilogue explains it quite well. There was good, but there was also great neglect and lack of oversight for these poor people. Why couldn't there have been kinder and more compassionate treatment? Why were the rules so harsh to families? Couldn't families have been allowed to see one another and visit one another? Those who grew up in the work houses under cruelty became the masters who were cruel. Given that everyone was terrified of going to these work houses, why didn't the government inspect them and make radical changes? This underscores the fact that governments throw money at a problem and consider it done and never count the cost for what it takes to really make them work well. There seems to have been no attempt to transition people out of the work houses and it became a hopeless way of life. This is how politicians assuage their consciences about the poor. Better to send a welfare check.

Unlike the other two Call the Midwife books that I have read, this book tells the life stories of two characters that the author encountered working at Nonnatus House. The first, Jane, is a quiet, fearful young women. She fears her own shadow, and cannot be trusted with any responsibility due to her fear of making a mistake. The other character, Mr Collett, a soldier who fought in the Boer war, begins as a client needing a nurse, and becomes a true friend to the author.Jane's story is the story of the workhouse, a horrible institution that punishes people for being poor. Starting out life as bubbly, charming, intelligent little girl, Jane's spirit is completely broken by the inhumanity of the workhouse system.The soldier, Mr. Collett starts out as a patient, but moves into the category of friend as his wounds heal. His life story is gradually revealed as her visits become more social than professional.Both stories reveal the humanity of the people who came into contact with the sisters and nurses of Nonnatus House, until changing economic times forced the end of the East End and the need for the services of Nonnatus House.

This second memoir in the "Call the Midwife" trilogy by Jennifer Worth is vastly ahead of the first, with both fluency of language and quality of storytelling having taken a quantum leap. I don't know whether there was more editorial input, or whether the author simply learned more literary craft, but whatever the case, I can recommend this book without reservation. Unlike the anecdotal, disjointed effect of the first book, this second volume contains full-arc stories, each of which is utterly compelling. If the final narrative doesn't bring you to your knees in empathetic pain, you're probably not human.Don't be inhuman. Read this book.

While I enjoyed the main male character of this book more than the first - there was a lack of substance to the story. The first 70% of the book takes place in a few days in the forest. Most of that time is spent on moving to new locations and lots of steamy sex. Even though I enjoy a good steamy scene, it got to be too much. I found myself skipping over those scenes as the story began to drag. The last 30% of the book was the best - more action, new characters, and the big resolution. One thing I just didn't get was how Kori, Thora's father, could try to force his daughter into a loveless marriage just for an alliance. He got to marry twice for love - why couldn't he do the same for his daughter? Of course, I really didn't like him much in the first story, so I wasn't surprised.

First off, I love all of Gianna Simone's books, but I think I may love this one just a teeny tiny bit more. Steady paced page-turner with a deep emotional side is how I would describe Norseman’s Deception. I’m not one to give away the whole story or revel too many details. I leave that to the reader to discover the plot twist and turns for themselves. Keeping that truth in mind, this story is about the journey of Ari and Thora. Both are on the run, and on their way to “The Thing” but for very different reasons. Set in the days of Vikings I felt like I was on the journey with them every step of the way. The worlds in which Ms. Simone creates her stories are always rich and full. This one is no exception. I could almost smell the earthen floor of their dwellings.Once again the author has captured the right amount of sexy lust vs. endearing love to keep her readers turning the pages until the end.I enjoyed this book so much I can’t wait for the next one. Maybe something with pirates *wink, wink*?

It took me a few chapters to realize Thora as Kori's daughter but once I did I loved the story even more. Completely in character she still defies what has been blessed to her. First being saved from filthy men by Ari, he proves at every turn that he is honorable even though he does not tell Thora who he really is and how their paths have crossed by the gods. The intimacy shared, well submitted to then thoroughly enjoyed was well written and not just distastefully thrown in your face, was magical. Leading all the way to the end, which I'm not telling, the intensity of events leading you every step to the final climatic judgment left me with a feeling fighting for love and truth are always worth the pain of the journey. Loved this storytelling that started with Kori and Geira ending with Thora and Ari! Just wished there could be more stories among this clan!

Yes, its ok. Fair story and interesting characters. While i like sex in any story--it spices it up--i think there should have been more emphasis on the story. Instead, there is too much concentration on a continual sex romp through 90% of the book. It's ALL they are doing. His original mission, the reason he shows up in the book in the first place, seemed lost ...... Would I read it again. ? No.

Great Historical Read! This is the second in the Norsemen Sagas book, however it can be read as a stand-alone. Thora runs away from her home fearing her father will force her into an arranged marriage. She has her two wolves with her that she has raised as pups. When outlaws corner her and wound one of her wolves Ari comes to her rescue. Who is he and can Thora trust him? Fast paced and steamy read. I was hooked from beginning to end, the chemistry between Ari and Thora is hot! Loved it!

The Norseman's Deception is a great read. Strong heroine and hero and lotsof romance that builds from the first meeting. I recommend reading, especially if you're intrigued by Vikings.

It read like book one. Bought this as a three book purchase. Don't know if I will be able to finish it.

a book filled by lies, few things within this book are true. This book seems to have been written by a woman scorned, given the repetitive statements about cheating and lying MEN! As for the menstrual blood, i thought she was in a dreamland, with out food standards so heavily policed furthermore i would like to know where she got her statistics regarding these allegations? too many lies in the guise of a book.

I have not completed this book: the opening was enough to tell me that the writer either confused Barbados with some other island she passed through, or has an agenda to destroy, denigrate, dishonor the country.

A short tirade about why the writer does not like Barbados, it was shallow repetitive and generally banal. I give it one star because I did not have the option of given it zero.

This booklet was written to somehow destroy the reputation of a country for whatever reason. Very amature and poorly written. Recommended for people who are malacious.

I was intrigued so I spent the 2.99 for this book. Maybe three or four things were accurate the book seems to be based on the authors bad experience. It was a good laugh

As a former expatriate in Barbados I can honestly attest to the accuracy of this book. I was horrified at the attitude of the bajans. Everyone I know was robbed,thus dubbing it an island of thieves. I had to get a guard dog as two tourists were macheted down the street from our home. It never made the news. I also had to import dog food as dogs on the island eat scraps. The high whites is another interesting subject for your next book. The strangest people on the planet.

This book is obviously biased, why write a book condemning an entire country for the actions of a marginal group? "....the people are unfriendly, prejudice, and corrupt". Sounds like every country in the world has people like this...A Short History of a Deviant Society...really? Please cite your historical research and share with the rest of us. One book that should have never been published.

Barbados the terrible - is the view of an author, who seems to have had a extremely bad experience in Barbados. This book happens to be a waste of time as the language, the writing style and the arrangement lacks why this is a book. Its a winded rant of an awful experience, and draws negativity to a country where I'm sure is enjoyed by others. Started off by placing every member of this society in one basket. The author for sure is bitter and angry but I'm sure other readers could have gathered that from the first sentence - Barbados is a society filled with sociopaths. This indicates that this author, even if the trees were nicely swaying in the breeze, would have blamed its roots for allowing it to grow.No reason for this to be published, the author could have written an essay and put it online. Not worth the money or the time reading. I really wish I didn't have to rate this, as it doesn't even deserves the one star. Maybe a downward thumb would have done it justice.

I have read Calais-Germain's other books on anatomy and movement, and thought them practical. As a midwife, I must understand how the pelvis works and how to work with the pelvis to facilitate birth. This book provides more information than I have found before. The author's perspective, that the pelvis is a dynamic region and moves, leads to a deep and complex understanding. Most texts seem to be tacitly based on a view that the pelvis is static and immobile; Kegel-types of exercises are often the only activity mentioned.I recommend this to students and senior practitioners. Midwives, L&D nurses, doctors, and doulas would benefit from this increased understanding of this region so critical to pregnancy and birth.

in 2016 I gave birth to my daughter in an at-home waterbirth, this book helped me understand the anatomy & physiology of the pelvis, upon which I could focus my mind whilst I was in labor. my delivery was nearly painless thanks to this book & the book "Childbirth without fear".

It is a technical but important book in understanding the correlation between the pelvis, uterus and muscles within to know how is going on at birth.

Excellent for understanding the anatomy of the pelvis and how to prepare for a natural birth. This is a real anatomy book- so if you are not interested in or get overwhelmed by anatomy, this book is not for you. There are great pictures and diagrams, making the anatomy easy to digest and understand.

Awesome, a MUST for childbirth workers

The content is completely different from other books on midwifery and obstetrics. This is the first book to address what can be done in pregnancy and labor to avoid cephalopelvic disproportion. It describes the pelvis as a somewhat flexible structure rather than one that is cast in stone.

This book helped with my first delivery so much, and I have since begun buying it for friends. Very well-written and researched!

Eric Goldman is a professor of law and Co-Director of the High Tech Law Institute at Santa Clara University School of Law. Before he became a full-time academic in 2002, he practiced Internet law for eight years in the Silicon Valley.
