"Everybody Loves Kamau!"Indeed.I always believed this, ever since I first started watching/listening when he had his first TV show, and I felt like I was one of his friends because I watched it while no one else I knew was. Surely he knew I was loyal! And surely he knew that I was one of the people he could count on.So this short piece by Mr. Bell intrigued me because--well, not everyone loves Kamau, not even those whom he'd reasonable expect would: his acquired family (through marriage). Not everyone thought he was good and kind and lovable. (Perhaps not even funny, the dastards!)But he explains not the "why" of this, but the "who." Which is a sad story, even with a redemptive arc. Kamau himself does what he can to present to people who he is; his friends and family do likewise; and slowly those who are twisted like a chain around an axle learn to see Mr. Bell as a person, and perhaps even learn to see themselves, and they let their twisted Slinky of self-value uncoil itself.I don't want anyone not to love Kamau. He's a good guy! But sometimes people are just formed to be afraid or judgmental or narrow or even wrong. It's hard to change how we're shaped, and even people of good will can be blind to their own brokenness.This story gives hope that sometimes these people can snap out of it--with the help of loved ones and family--and simply love the people in their lives with no reservations.There are no guarantees it will happen, of course. But when it does happen--it's beautiful.
It's a warm story about family and getting together in only a way Kamau could tell it. I really love how it talks about family over prejudice. The Dr. and Mr. Bell gave me warm fuzzies. What a wonderful read!
I love the author's style. He is a great storyteller and keeps you engaged. His series on CNN is very good.
Kaman and his white wife 's family get use to each other.. A common American phenomena in today's world gets dealt with.
I'm going to state right up front that, although I do watch CNN for news, I rarely ever watch their other programming. Not because I don't like Kamau Bell, Christiane Amanpour, or Anthony Bourdain. The few times I have watched any of them, I enjoyed their philosophical points and the way they come across. I just don't enjoy watching their shows.Despite that, I bought Everybody Loves Kamau! because it did sound interesting. Read on to find why I enjoyed this selection.After reading an intense Amazon First, I needed some humor. Of all the offerings of shorts, this was the one story that piqued my interest. The others seemed more oriented towards women, romance after divorce and so on.Kamau Bell writes mostly of his experiences in becoming accepted into an family of Italian descendants. I could relate to it, because while employed in Egypt after my divorce, I met an Egyptian lady of Lebanese ancestry that was as proud of their lineage as my grandparents were of their German ancestry, or as Kamau's girlfriend's family. While it might be complicated by his race, I doubt, had he been German, or Norwegian, that it would have been a cakewalk to get accepted. Still, the way he addresses the issues involved is terrific. Several times I broke out in laughter.When he finally did get accepted, Bell's discussion of the grandfather's death and funeral was both touching, and interesting. (He had become so accepted that he was one of the pallbearers, just as were the other grandsons. There is an interesting paradox regarding this, but I don't want to spoil the ending.ONE SMALL NEGATIVE In my opinion, the writer reverts to some stereotyping himself. Or, perhaps, he does so for its humorous effect. At any rate, were I to have referred to people in a style similar to Bell's, I expect more than an occasional person might complain. Then again, perhaps it is I who is over-reacting. So take my thoughts for what they're worth...ExcerptSorry, for these short stories I do not provide excerpts.BOTTOM LINEAn enjoyable read, with a few quickie animations sprinkled throughout to make for a more interesting experience than simply reading. I was sad it was so short, but I admire his ability to make us understand divergent points of view. I plan to read more of his work. I just loved his tv series.
Dry humor expressively written. Clear and precise. I kept mentally picturing Khamau’s emotions as his writing designed them. Excellent writing descriptively outlined. I am a first time reader of his work and intends to pursue the collection of his other works of art.
