Finding Grace in the Face of Dementia:

Review

“This book offers needed help and hope for those who have a loved one experiencing dementia. John Dunlop’s training as a medical doctor, along with his understanding of what the Bible teaches us about our bodies and our souls, gives him a unique perspective from which to address this crucial issue.”―Dennis Rainey, President and CEO, FamilyLife; Host, FamilyLife Today; author, Stepping Up“Finding this book is like discovering a wonderful treasure. John Dunlop has mined decades of experience as geriatrician, son of a mother with dementia, bioethics expert, and active church member to help the rest of us make sense of a condition that seems to rob people of every shred of dignity. Drawing on the glorious biblical truth of every person’s creation in the image of God, Dunlop shows that dignity cannot be lost even in the face of dementia. People entering or anticipating the experience of dementia, as well as their family, friends, and caregivers―in other words, nearly everyone―will find in this book the grace they need to cope with its challenges.”―John F. Kilner, Professor of Bioethics and Contemporary Culture, Forman Endowed Chair of Ethics and Theology, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School; Director of Bioethics Programs, Trinity International University“Almost thirty years ago, my mother died of complications springing from nine years of Alzheimer’s Disease. During those nine years I read several helpful books that described the stages of the disease, what to expect, and how to respond. Nowadays similar resources are found on the web. But there is nothing quite like John Dunlop’s book on dementia. Decades of experience as a geriatrician and a devout Christian combine to help other believers think through dementia―what it means, how to trust God when you see its onset (in you or in friends and relatives), and, yes, how God glorifies himself and brings strength to his people precisely in the midst of such horrendous, ravaging illness. This book will help you become a better caregiver; more importantly, it will help you become a more mature and thoughtful Christian. It may even help you become a better patient.”―D. A. Carson, Research Professor of New Testament, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School; Cofounder, The Gospel Coalition“My father-in-law resided with us through his eight-year journey with Alzheimer’s. As a physician, I had taken care of patients with dementia, but then I lived with the disease. The best way to help a friend or family member dealing with this illness is to give them a copy of this book. It is an invaluable resource.”―David Stevens, CEO, Christian Medical and Dental Associations"Finding Grace in the Face of Dementia is a remarkably helpful book on the increasingly common phenomenon of dementia. Growing out of his medical practice as a geriatric physician and his experience as a caregiver for his parents, both of whom suffered from dementia, John Dunlop writes for those who struggle with this disease themselves, for caregivers, and for members of the body of Christ eager to lean in and love well in these difficult circumstances. This book ably and understandably covers the waterfront medically, theologically, practically, and experientially. Combining compassionate kindness, sober realism, appropriate anguish and lament, and ultimate confidence in God's love and grace, Dunlop both encourages and fortifies those who suffer and those who give care. This book rings true to my own experience with my mother, who suffered from dementia for twenty years. May this much-needed resource be used widely and mightily in the days ahead."―Steven C. Roy, Associate Professor of Pastoral Theology, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School“Dementia may well be the most feared diagnosis in the Western world, and this book is a timely contribution to a community in need of education and encouragement. Dunlop does not gloss over the challenges that dementia can bring but takes us by the hand and leads us sympathetically through the various aspects of the illness. Dunlop’s extensive experience allows him to contribute rich practical and spiritual wisdom for those walking this path. I highly recommend it as a guide.”―Megan Best, palliative care practitioner; bioethicist

God directed me to this book just moments before I knew how much I would need it. Honestly, some of it is difficult to read because you realize what a loved one is going to experience when the later stages of dementia set in and the impact it can have on their caregivers. But Dr. Dunlop offers words of encouragement throughout for those who are facing this disease.Though the book is directed at people with dementia or caring for those who have it, it is a book that every Christian should read. Dr. Dunlop is constantly expressing the need to see the image of God in people and it is a good reminder to every Christian that every person is creating in God's image, we are image bearers. I believe this will become the book I start giving to people whom I know are suffering from health issues or are caring for family members with health issues.Aside from the Bible, this book might be the most influential book I have ever read. Dr. Dunlop, thank you so much for allowing God to use you to present a very readable book, which is scripturally sound, on dementia.

As a daughter who has struggled with resentment with her mother for several years, and has now found that she is the only one left to care for her mother, this book has brought me much comfort. Before reading this book, I wondered how was I ever going to be able to care for someone I don't even like, when it occurred to me during the reading, that relationship no longer exists. My duty is unto the Lord. My great goal in life is to one day hear the words that I have been good and faithful. I am excited now for the opportunity to serve my God, and quite possibly heal the brokenness that separates me from my mom. Right now, she lives in assisted living, but with book, it's tips, and baby steps maybe we can grow closer. I have FINALLY found something that can give me hope!

Outstanding book that was introduced to me at the perfect time. My mother is in the advanced stages of Parkinson's Dementia and this book renewed my faith in Christ and showed me that I am not alone with my frustrations, and sadness in waiting on the Lord to call her home. A wonderful reminder built on scripture that God is in control and through all things, he will be glorified. Well done.

Dr. John Dunlop's FINDING GRACE IN THE FACE OF DEMENTIA is a book you'll find yourself passing around after dementia has touched your family and its welcome pages have found your hands. The author is no stranger to the fog that gathers with detention, both because of his own family's experience with the quiet drama of it (Dunlop would probably not call it 'tragedy') and because his medical specialization has brought him face to face with similar families and their pain. The author writes with deep Christian conviction that animates rather than deflects him from chapter after empathic and knowledgeable chapter. This book is, for families like mine, a godsend.I bought and read it when my own late father was declining in a nursing home, not because he had been diagnosed with dementia (he had not) but because his own narrowing life made Dunlop's counsel as applicable to my own family's dilemma as it would have been if the diagnosis had been dementia itself. There is, here, good medicine. But there is also a confidence that God's grace (thus the title) is not clouded over when memory fades.Dunlop writes with the pen of a man who has skin in the game, for the likelihood that his own life will know these clouds is—on genetic grounds—considerable. There is a quiet fellowship of those whose have known these clouds, strangers but for this most painful and common experience. So buy three copies, or four.

This inspiring book shows how the power of the Gospel transforms life for those with dementia and their caregivers. Although it brought me to tears, it was also encouraging. I have a family member with dementia, and I would recommend this book to most people who have family members with dementia. I would also recommend it to everyone who wants to support people in their church community who are impacted by dementia. The only time I wouldn't recommend this book is if someone seemed so overwhelmed by their grief that it just wasn't a good time to offer them any book.

The peace I found in the words of this book, expressed my heart - my sister, the precious child of God. She has Alzheimer's and I am her watchman, honored by God to watch over her until he calls her home.

Help in DementiaDr. John Dunlop’s new book Finding Grace in The Face of Dementia is certainly not an escapist approach to God’s presence in dementia, i.e., he doesn’t just quote a few Bible verses and expect this will satisfy all the issues that this horrific disease causes. But in his combination of medical understanding and Biblical truth, he offers help and perspective to people coping with the disease. He dedicates the book “to those who seek to love and care for people with dementia in ways that honor God”. ( John Dunlop, Finding Grace in The Face of Dementia, Crossway 2017).

This book was very well written and so very helpful tocaregivers and also to patients who have and are sufferingwith Dementia/Alzheimers. It helped me to have a betterunderstanding of how to deal with it and also God'shand in it all.
