#220,740 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

The author shares every detail she has learned about Ada Blackjack's life -- and the lives of everyone connected to Ada. In other words, the book goes way beyond Ada's story. Sometimes this was interesting and added to our understanding or appreciation of her world and her incredible adventure (1921 - 1923), but some of it was really overkill. Don't think of this as Ada's biography, though that is in there as much as the author could piece it together. There are some strange errors (author referring to the Soviets in the early 1800s - what's with that??) and too much repetition. A stronger editor would have been nice. Note: there are lots of great photos, embedded in the text of the paper version but stuck at the back of the Kindle version. Don't miss them.

I found this book quite odd. Ada is a complicated character and though I was curious about her story of survival and found it admirable, the long after story was not so interesting. Didn't love the writing style but have read so much since that I've forgotten why. Just don't have a warm place in my heart for this one though I generally am strongly held by survival stories.

While I enjoyed the book overall, I found it was a little disappointing that most of the story was about Ada's 'survival' after she was rescued from Wrangel Island. I enjoyed the Arctic adventure a lot more than reading so much about the effects it had on the rest of her life. While the experiences she had on Wrangel Island impacted nearly every part of her life after her rescue, I feel that I would have liked to have had the book focus a lot more on the time spent on the island with a much smaller portion dedicated to her life after the fact. She was an extraordinary women and I admire her courage and willingness to overcome adversity. It is incredible to think that anyone could survive the conditions she had to endure. I read the Ice Master first, but I think Niven did a better job in writing this book. It's much easier to follow. Now to find another adventure book! Suggestions?

I love true stories of Arctic exploration and this book did not disappoint. I found I could not put it down. I appreciated the writer's writing style and exhaustive research that told a complete story. The first half of the book told the main story of what happened during the adventure/tragedy, and the second half dealt with the aftermath in the lives of all the characters. So many books use a short epilogue to try to tie up all the loose ends, and leave the reader with many questions. But this book told a complete story, answering so many questions along the way so that by the end, I had very little that I was still wondering about. I was amazed at how much material the writer must have had to go through to write this account. The story is controversial, and the characters had different opinions about what really happened and who was at fault, but I honestly felt the writer did a very good job of giving a fair accounting of everyone's side, without being biased. The reader is left to decide for themselves how compelling they felt the evidence was. I also felt quite attached to several of the characters and found it to be a fascinating, inspiring, and emotional book.

Why 2 stars only? PICTURES! eBook version is missing pictures. Some at the end, but where are the rest? Did the author and her friends put this together by themselves? The story itself is great. To the point of truth being stranger than fiction. As it always is. But this is a disservice to that truth. It’s as if out of 6 drafts, they decided to use number 5. Andthat’s not an exaggeration. That typo is just one example. This book can be recommended for the story, but prepare yourself for the disappointment of the writing and layout.

A good story, but takes a long time to get into the actual expedition. A lot of detail about the funding and selection of the members of the expedition, and it took away from the story. Once the journey is underway, the story of survival gets much better. Hard to imagine what these people endured to try to survive, left alone to their own devices. A good read once you get past the background into.

Based on diaries, journals, historical documents, and interviews with family and descendants, this story was capably extracted and retold in a way that brings to vivid life a story of insurmountable odds, and the sole woman survivor.Ada Blackjack is an absorbing page-turner.This would be a good novel for a teen-aged girl, imho. The circumstances of being alone in a world that challenges, threatens & demands submission will resonate. The fact that Ada Blackjack overcomes great fear and unfamiliarity or simple ignorance of survival techniques with primitive and minimal gear will surely inspire.I bought this up in Denali at the bookstore, and it did not disappoint. Unwilling to part with my copy yet, I just bought another to send to a friend.I am also getting Niven's fact-based book on the Karluk expedition to read.

I think I have read every survival story and this one is a classic. The character development is wonderful as Ada and the four men that accompanied her were so real and true to life. While I did think the amount of time the author devoted to after Ada's return seemed a bit much, I get it. The adventure lasted but two years, but the controversies lasted her lifetime. Ada was described as a real person, and not a fictional hero. A must read.
