Isaiah is my favorite book of the Bible. I am so excited to have it in the Passion version. Can't wait for the whole Bible to come out. This is an awesome book. You will not be disappointed. I bought it in both the book and kindle version. Great!!

This Translation changed Bible reading for me. Cant wait until all the OT is translated.

Thought the wordiness of this translation might be wearisome to read; instead found it very refreshing to read, and love the way it got me more aware of God’s heart, and makes it easier to see His love and desire for His creation.

Love this translation.

maxing translation. Powerful. Insightful. Divine.

I LOVE this translation so much I’m obsessed ! I read it every day and love all the back story it gives below ! Has helped me place things in a historical sense as well as spiritually how it applies to me today ! I purchased two more as gifts !

Can’t wait to see more of God’s love through the scriptures of Isaiah. The author and translator is incredible! I have the whole “new testament” in the passion translation

Like it, foot notes especially.

This is a book about the most important contributor to the development of radar and the atomic bomb that you have never heard of. Who the hell was Alfred Lee Loomis? Secret palace of science that changed the course of WWII, seriously? I picked this up at a used book store in 2002. I was in no hurry to read it so it sat on my shelf for a few years. How could this be really significant? I thought I knew all that was necessary to understand the technological and scientific developments that helped win that terrible war. Boy, was I wrong!Alfred Loomis was intimately involved with the development of the two most critical technologies responsible for the allied victory in World War II: radar and the atomic bomb. The story of the atomic bomb is well known but the story of radar has not been widely told. Jennet Conant has put together a gripping tale that is full of surprises. As a successful and wealthy financier Alfred Loomis owned property in the New York state gated community called Tuxedo Park. The tuxedo was named for the community not the other way round. That is where the “secret palace of science” was located. Loomis bought a second home called the Tower House and dedicated it solely to the pursuit of science. Better equipped than what universities had at the time, it became a haven for visiting scientists to do their own research and research that Alfred Loomis was interested in. His collaborators included the well-respected American physicist Dr Robert Wood and Ukrainian-American chemist George Kistiakowsky (later responsible for the implosion method of detonation for the plutonium bomb). Loomis also hosted scientific conferences and the best in their fields came to give talks. It was Albert Einstein who dubbed the house a “palace of science.” Among those who came to Tuxedo Park was Earnest Lawrence. He arrived in 1936 to meet Loomis, see the “palace of science,” and to perhaps see about arranging some funding for his scientific work. Lawrence had been working on a device called a cyclotron for several years and he was trying to get funding for a larger device. Not only was Loomis interested in the cyclotron but he and Lawrence became immediate friends. Loomis sponsored Lawrence’s work and the cyclotron would become a pivotal piece of equipment in the quest to build an atomic bomb; it also got Lawrence a Nobel Prize in 1939.As a prominent and highly successful financier of public utility projects Loomis had important contacts in the business world. As a successful amateur physicist with his own state-of-the-art laboratory he had important contacts in academia. One of those contacts, MIT president Karl Compton, suggested that Loomis begin to investigate radar early in 1939. As the threat of war descended over Europe Loomis was casting about for something important to become involved in. Even though a solid Republican Loomis was not an isolationist. He would do everything he could to make sure America was prepared for defense and, if necessary, war. He remembered how difficult it had been for America during WW I. So, by 1939 Loomis was involved in both Lawrence’s cyclotron and radar. Lawrence would have most probably built his 184 inch cyclotron without Loomis’s help but Loomis’s financial support made everything move faster. Lawrence enjoyed bouncing all his ideas off Loomis. They were so close that Loomis actually had a desk at Lawrence’s Berkeley Radiation Lab. It quickly became clear that radar would not progress until a powerful beam of very short wave, 10 cm or less, radiation could be produced. All the devices designed in America were not powerful enough. This is where the astonishing Tizard Mission enters the story. Britain, now at complete industrial capacity, no longer had the ability to add new programs of production. They had newly invented devices that would dramatically improve her war fighting ability but needed the help of the US to put them into the hands of the war fighters. The mission arrived in the US in September of 1940 with one particularly amazing device, the cavity magnetron. The cavity magnetron makes modern radar possible. The British mission met with Loomis and he immediately knew that the magnetron changed everything and he went to work. Almost overnight, by the force of his determination, using his connections in government, industry and academia, using his personal wealth, Loomis started the Radiation Lab at MIT. Lawrence, who had never been politically involved, suddenly became motivated to work in radar. He immediately contacted physicists all over the country to come work on radar and they all said yes. Astonishing! Even before the US was involved in the war Lawrence and Loomis were able to get the top physicists to drop their research and come to newly constructed facilities at MIT and begin work on an enterprise none had ever tried or considered before. It was a startling success. When the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor the Army had an experimental radar station on Oahu. It was a very large beast with a monstrous antenna and operated at wavelengths in the meter range. It was so experimental their warnings of incoming unknown planes were ignored and the attack on 7 December took US forces by surprise. By the time of the naval battles in the waters around Guadalcanal in November of 1942, less than a year later, much smaller, more powerful and more accurate devices had been installed on the Navy’s ships. Devices had been installed aboard Navy and Army aircraft to track down and kill German subs off the east and gulf coasts of America. This fantastic success is a testament to the indomitable efforts of Loomis and Lawrence and the American (some European refugees too) scientists who came to their call. One of my favorite contributors is Columbia physics professor I.I. Rabi (physics Nobel Prize in 1944). He became head of radar research and when a new proposal for another use for radar was suggested Rabi would always ask, “How many Germans will it kill?” When the atomic bomb project finally started moving forward Oppenheimer began poaching physicists from the radar project. He really wanted Rabi but Rabi refused. He thought radar was more critical to the war effort and he thought the bomb could not be completed in time to matter. However he was too important to be left out of that effort and was made a consultant on the bomb project, the only person to commute from the radar project to the Los Alamos site during the war. He was present for the Trinity test. The race to begin work on an atomic bomb had been horribly delayed by the ineptitude of Lyman Briggs, the one Roosevelt charged with investigating the possibility. Briggs should have immediately brought it to the attention of the National Academy of Sciences but he didn’t. He sat on it. He did nothing. It was Lawrence who, after becoming dismayed by the delay, began to investigate the possibility on his own in 1940. Lawrence did think uranium could be used to make a bomb and his team of scientists at Berkeley, using the cyclotron, discovered two new transuranic elements: neptunium and plutonium. Lawrence was convinced plutonium could also be used to make a bomb. Still nothing happened with Briggs. Finally British physicist Mark Oliphant came to the US in the summer of 1941. He was a member of a British committee looking into the possibility of an atomic bomb (he also worked on the cavity magnetron) and their assessment was it could and should be done. Briggs had ignored their report and Oliphant wanted to know why. Finally, because of Oliphant, after all that time wasted, the atomic bomb project began to move forward. Finally in the summer of 1942 locations for a site to be used to construct an atomic bomb were scouted. It could have, and should have, happened in the summer of 1941. I think that was a tragedy. Think what might have resulted from an atomic bomb ready for use in August of 1944 instead of 1945. In August of 1944 the Western Allies were still tied up in Normandy. So much death and destruction could have been avoided if Britain and America could have rained atomic bombs on Germany. This book is primarily a biography of Alfred Loomis describing his upbringing, education, personal life, how he amassed a fortune, became a scientist and a prime participant in the two most critical technological enterprises of the Second World War. We have never heard of him before because he wanted it that way. He did not seek fame or fortune from any of his discoveries and inventions, like Loran navigation. After the war he insisted that the MIT lab be closed. It had been necessary for government to become involved in radar because of the war. Now, after the war, it should go to industry. And a billion dollar industry would be created. In 1945 it would be accidentally discovered by a Raytheon engineer (Raytheon was one of the companies that built radar sets for the military) that microwaves can heat food, another industry was born. And, in 1947, experimenting with microwaves beamed at hydrogen, Willis Lamb would discover the Lamb Shift, greatly further the understanding of quantum electrodynamics and win a Nobel Prize. The cavity magnetron made all that possible. It was the extraordinary collaboration between Britain and the US that won the war and greatly influenced progress in science, industry and the quality of life. There is a very personal reason Jennet Conant wrote this book: her grandfather, James B Conant, was director of the National Defense Research Committee that oversaw the radar and atomic bomb projects, among others. There is also another family connection that ties directly into the Loomis “palace of science.” It is a very interesting and tragic part of the tale that the author opens this book with. In all I got an extremely fascinating story of the development of radar and the atomic bomb as well as an extremely fascinating look into the life of the man who contributed so much to making those efforts a success: Alfred Lee Loomis. Everyone should read this outstanding book!I have been deeply interested in how it was America, profoundly resistant to becoming involved in another European war, was actually so prepared to fight by the first year of the war. It is fashionable among historians to tout the dismally small size of the US Army in 1939 and put that forward to demonstrate America’s unpreparedness. And it was true, in 1939 the US Army was pathetic. But it is also true that by 1942, the first year of the war, America was suddenly ready. Not completely ready but able to take the offensive by that first year. Even with the losses at Pearl Harbor the US Navy was ready, two new fast battleships entered action at Guadalcanal by November of 1942. The four carriers lost in 1942 were replaced in 1943. The Army had the men and amphibious craft necessary to launch a major assault on North Africa in November of 1942. And radar was ready in 1942! The atomic bomb project began in 1942 and my research shows me that represents a late start but many don’t see it that way. Jennet Conant’s book is a fabulous contribution to understanding how so many Americans saw the coming storm and made sure America was ready. For more on the Tizard Mission see The Tizard Mission: The Top-Secret Operation That Changed the Course of World War II by Stephen PhelpsFor more on US / British cooperation see Eisenhower's Armies: The American-British Alliance during World War II by Niall Barr

This is a fascinating peek into the life of brilliant and reclusive millionaire, whose contributions to the US army technology made it possible to defeat the Nazis in the WWII (at least on the Western Front). I've never heard of Alfred Lee Loomis before, and it's amazing how man possessing a rare combination of financial, scientific and engineering brilliance could slip so easily under the mainstream history's radar (sorry for the pun). While not exactly a full-fledged biography, the book does a good job chronicling Loomis's career as an extremely successful businessman (he was able to predict the stock market crash and survive the Great Depression with virtually no damage to his fortune), his abrupt, unlikely switch to engineering pursuits and the subsequent rise to scientific prominence. Loomis's work led to the development of radar technology that helped thwart German U-boats and bombers during the WWII, and the book helps put his contributions in a proper spotlight showing that they were just as important as creation of atomic bomb and cracking of the Enigma code. My only gripe is that the book sometimes throws a lot of technical details and lingo at you without really bothering to explain what all of it means; so, a bit of supplementary reading might be required. On the other hand, little details and anecdotes pertaining to personal life and characters of Loomis and his circle of friends, relatives and colleagues also abound, so even if you don't particularly care for nuts-and-bolts of physics, you're unlikely to stay bored for too long. Recommended!

What a great book! Though this book is not actually about WW-II, if you think you know how we won WW-II you may be very interested of what actually went on behind the scenes here is the US scientific community and how this one man's wealth, love of science and philanthropy enabled the US' victory. Loomis' Tower House laboratory literally either invented, paved the way or facilitated breakthroughs from spectroscopy, encephalography and precision chronography to RADAR (and even the fission weapon that cost 40K+ Japanese lives to save 2.1 million US and allied lives and effectively ended WW-I) by gather some of the greatest minds in world with the lure of having access to some of the finest laboratory equipment on earth and the funding to pursue their scientific interests -- From Bohr to Heisenurg to Lawrence to Einstein and many dozens of other notables, and from his personal service in WW-II in the field and, more notably, as the head of Research at the US Aberdeen Proving Grounds. Most of the accounts in this book are via intensive document research (has an extensive bibliography) and via the diaries of other researchers, family and friends and many accounts are direct quotations from those sources. Ironically, since Alfred Lee Loomis never had interest in drawing attention to himself n or his wealth-gathering years, his single-minded focus on science and one breakthrough after another, effectively excluded him from the history books. There is also much insight into the doings of high-society in the 20s and 30s since Tower House was actually located in the exclusive enclave of Tuxedo Park -- home to dozens of the most wealthy in the US. Tower House is still there, now housing the (private) Vacuum Tube Museum. So, while this book is clearly a biography of Alfred Lee Loomis, it is also a vital work in understanding this country's history, society, science and also why the free enterprise system is the only vehicle that could have possibly permitted a single man to so profoundly impact the betterment of this science and, through that, the this country and, arguably, the betterment of all mankind. I'm not a novel reader at all -- I am much more comfortable reading science and nature magazines and some journals, however this book painted a heretofore unpaved road underneath the players and breakthroughs in the world of science in a way I found both engaging and satisfying. If you share similar interests by all means read it! And if you just like history and/or a better understanding of the just how some key science came to be, you will also like this book. There are a lot of characters and the Prologue and first chapter do set the stage, but it can be a easy to get a little lost in the names, yet it's writing with appropriate 'tie-backs' direct and parenthetical) that you will not likely get lost for long. Buy it!!

I absolutely love this book! The photos, colors, and tones are jaw dropping. I love the historical content, and it makes me feel like a lot of these photos could have been taken in the past 10-20 years, while most were from 80 to 100 years ago!

This book changes how I see the past now. This book brings history TO. LIFE. I absolutely love this book. The picture that utterly sold me on the excellence of this book is a photo of white bearded Confederate and Union Soldiers playing cards together at a Civil War "reunion." These guys look like friends who are reenactment hobbyists just playing around with costumes. No, this is a real photo. These are real Civil War Soldiers. Those are real people just like you and me. Just, Wow.

Wolfgang Wild & Jordan Lloyd have created a most curious and exceptional book of black & white photos colorized to perfection. Along with each picture is an accounting of its circumstance. The photo of Wilber Wright in his glider over the dunes at Kitty Hawk is breathtaking.

The colorization of these historical photos adds a lot of interest to images that are already fascinating. This is a lovely coffee table book - beautifully made - that is worth reading cover to cover.

_History as They Saw It: Iconic Moments from the Past in Color_ presents 120 colorized photographs from the first century of photography. The colorization by artist Jordan Lloyd is brilliant. Many of the photographs will be familiar to the reader, and this presentation allows one to see the past much as one's ancestors did. The book is beautifully laid out in reverse chronological format. The left margin of each two-page spread contains a timeline visually depicting when each photograph occurred and a map showing where each picture was taken. There is also a four-page fold-out spread with an aerial view of San Francisco taken just after the 1906 earthquake. Fascinating and recommended!

I do love coffee table books. I love them for their illustrations and for their view of the world. I love how some of them are themed and how some of them have no great purpose at all but to bring enjoyment to the reader. They are like a magnet, I am drawn to them, no matter their size and I could spend hours just thumbing through their pages, staring at their illustrations and/or reading their words.I just wanted to see what this book entailed so I stood standing thumbing through its pages but slowing I began pulling out a chair, and that preview lasted over an hour. I was pulled in as this book was fantastic. It covered a lot of territory and these photographs were incredible. I loved how each two-page spread featured an original black-n-white photograph from the past. Some of these photographs I was familiar with and some were new to me. I knew I would have to come back later and really spend some time with this book.Wolfgang and Jordan created this book by adding color to some iconic photographs, creating visuals of what this time in history might have actually looked like. What I found interesting is the shading and the tints of the colors used. Jordan took great care in getting the details in each picture down to an exact element and I feel that he did an excellent job.Along with their photograph, they’ve included details about the original artwork and a map of world which highlights where the photograph was taken. I thought this information was very valuable, insightful and it was fun to read. The authors also included with each photograph an additional original comment, a speech, or some of other written material that pertained to the event in the photograph. It made the photograph personable. The photographs covered a lot of history and a large number of places, which I thought was great. Beginning in 1839 and ending in 1949. The authors provide for us in the back of this book, a copy of each original photograph, chronically listed, that they used and they explain a bit more about each of these photographs (interesting stuff). An index and table of contents complete this book.As you look at the photographs (photos posted) look at the details - the colors - it is truly an amazing book.Wow, I truly love this book. I am putting this on my list of books to buy.

We received this book at our local library and it is fascinating! Our history has been given to us our entire lives in black and white and while we know they lived it in color, it is a whole new feeling, a whole new image of our past when it is given to us in this well-done vividly colored photographic collection. I will definitely be buying a copy for our home collection.

I got my first book by Rick Bayless soon after it was published and now have 7. Although we live hundreds of miles from his restaurants, my husband is from the Chicago area and I have been to Topolobampo a number of times and Frontera grill a couple. I have also traveled extensively in Mexico and love that I can use recipes from this book to re-experience dishes I've eaten in Mexico in a shorter time without sacrificing flavor or texture. Some of the traditional preparations in his early books, and in Diana Kennedy's books on Mexican cooking, are very time consuming and these are so much easier. I especially like the slow cooker recipes. I've made carnitas (one of my favorite foods when done well) the traditional way and am so impressed by the slow cooker results. I've never had a rice cooker, preferring the texture I can achieve on stove top, but may get one after reading some of the recipes in this book. ,

Rick extends and enhances the philosophy he laid out in the first Mexican Everyday, with a streamlined, yet still complex and delicious approach to Mexican home cooking. Whereas the overwhelming majority of the first everyday book could be cooked from a standard issue american grocery store, with no special equipment, More Mexican Everyday explores the use of specific appliances like slow and rice cookers and a more complex range of produce that might require a trip to Whole Foods or a farmers' market. Although this raises the requirements for home cooks, Rick is always there to explain how these recipes can fit into everyday life. Also, he includes recipes for 4 seasoning pastes and adobos (he calls them "secret weapons" and the total could be taken to 5 if you include the salsa macha recipe on page 333), which are worth the price of admission all by themselves. A great addition to my library of Mexican cookbooks!

I bought this cookbook for my husband for Father's Day. (My husband picks out what he want to eat and I make it.) We own two of Rick's other books so I was not sure that this book would have much that was new, but I was wrong. I have made many of the recipes over the past few weeks and have loved all, but one. In the beginning of the book Rick explains what kitchen tools a home cook needs. He convinced me to buy a slow cooker and I have really enjoyed using it. I have also been using my grandmother's cast iron frying pan again that I had stopped using many years ago. Then he explains some basic recipes that can be made ahead and then used to add depth of flavor to meals that can be cooked more quickly. Included are wonderful photos that show you the food and in some cases how to prepare it. When I am done, my food actually looks like the pictures and tastes as good as it looks. This is perfect for a home chef who needs to get food on the table quickly during the week and has more time to do some cook ahead on the weekends. If you like central american flavors, you will love this cookbook.

I have the first version of this cookbook too (Mexican Everyday), so after looking at the table of contents, I knew I wanted More Mexican Everyday. Right away I prepared a couple recipes, including the tomatillo sauce base, which is bright and full flavored. I had no serrano chilis, so I used the jalapeño chilis I had on hand. I think serranos have more heat, but the jalapeños stood in quite successfully. Just bought the heads of garlic to make the Roasted Garlic Mojo sauce. I only discovered Rick Bayless recently, and not through his television shows. My daughter-in-law is not a fan of chilis, but she loves the tomatillo sauce! You know I'll be making more recipes from this book.

I recently bought this book and have only made two dishes from so far - the pork carnitas and the roasted tomato salsa. Both were amazing and the directions were very easy to follow! I've made tomato salsas before, but none was as well received as this one. I also made another Rick Bayless dish not included in this book - the Guajillo Chilaquiles - google it! It's very easy to make and so full of great flavor. With this book I've managed to impress my husband, who is from Veracruz, Mexico and is desperately missing the flavors of his country, and I'm excited to try more dishes since the ones I've made so far, without any alterations whatsoever, have been so well received by my family.Thank you, Rick Bayless, for really making me excited to get into the kitchen and cook something new!

I heard Rick Bayless interviewed recently on the America's Test Kitchen podcast and decided to buy the book he mentioned throughout the interview. He has some good ideas, particularly his "secret weapons" that he always has in his refrigerator, viz. green chile adobo and red chile adobo. His "go to meals to know by heart" are interesting though not all to my liking. This is a good book to have on hand though. It is well-written and easy to use as a reference.

Excellent and easy to follow directions. Great idea for contents of covered recipes at front of book, summary, ingredient list, abundant color (before, during and after) pictures, directions in Rick's conversational tone, recap for shopping list. Wished it was not a hardback book, will be used often.

I have wanted this cookbook for a while now and finally ordered it. I have tried Bayless' recipes before and they are always authentic and delicious. He does use a number of very specific ingredients but, in general, they are fairly easy to track down. There are a lot of recipes in this book that I've never even heard of and can't wait to try

Diving and Snorkeling Guide to Truk Lagoon (Lonely Planet Diving & Snorkeling Great Barrier Reef), by Tim Rock

Truk Lagoon, known as Chuuk – a group of tropical paradise islands in the Federal States of Micronesia – offers adrenaline-junky scuba divers a cool yet creepy underwater adventure in shark-infested Pacific waters while wreck diving the mysterious Ghost Fleet of Truk Lagoon. More than 50 major shipwrecks from WWII litter the seabed, making the undersea wonder of the world the best shipwreck diving destination on the globe. In 1944, Americans launched Operation Hailstone, which has been called the Japanese Pearl Harbor, and the bombardment lasted for three days. The attack wiped out 60 ships and 275 airplanes, sinking them to the bottom of the lagoon, so that now it is the biggest ship graveyard in the world. Most of the wrecks were left untouched for nearly 25 years since people feared setting off the thousands of sunken bombs. Many of the shipwrecks in the scuba diving paradise have full cargo holds full of fighter aircraft, tanks, bulldozers, railroad cars, motorcycles, torpedoes, mines, bombs, boxes of munitions, radios, thousands of various weapons, human remains, and other artifacts. More than 3,000 people were thought to have been killed and some divers swear that the wrecks in Truk Lagoon are haunted.

Nice general guide to the lagoon. There is so much detail to be covered that a book this size can't cover it all but this book does a nice job of covering the dives in broad strokes

It gives good general descriptions of dive sites on Truk and has been informative on diving and other subjects

Unthinkable is the rare work which can combine reading pleasure with genuine insight. It has its faults, or at least shortcomings which result from the genre, but it still worth spending an evening reading the book cover to cover.Helen Thomson is a journalist with a degree in neuroscience. As such she chooses to revive the conceit of Oliver Sacks by describing the life of people who have unusual brains which either give them abilities or disabilities compared to most of humanity. Unlike Sacks, Thomson chooses to describe these people mostly in an outpatient setting—to allow the reader to see them as persons and not as mental patients or as spectacles for a circus. We thus encounter a man who remembers every detail of his life, a man who sees color auras around people and a doctor who literally feels the pain of his patients. All make for fascinating case studies on their own. But Thomas takes the cases further by summarizing what neuroscientists know about the origin of these conditions. There is a theme in the work that these people are only extreme cases of capabilities of all human beings. As such, Thomson tends to shun the idea that these people have identified mental illnesses and instead view them as simply differently abled individuals. I have no training in psychology but tend to think there is something useful in labeling what is a healthy human mind and what are clearly aberrations.I also couldn’t help but think that many of the chapters read like the extended articles frequently appearing these days in periodicals or the internet. I would have preferred more substance and less anecdote but individual readers’ tastes may differ.Even so, I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and learned something about how the brain works as well. Strongly recommend this book to non-experts in neuroscience who want a work with a captivating style which also teaches some basic facts about the marvelous work of nature that is the human brain.

It's difficult to balance science and narrative. I've read a lot of books where the author would just regurgitate their facts and findings, making for a very dull read. This is not a dull read in any way. Each life is described so well, it feels like you're right there with the people. The science of each affliction is blended so neatly into the narrative that you learn naturally. I would reccomend this books for anyone interested in the human brain and consciousness.

While the author cites Oliver Sacks as a primary influence, I was reminded more strongly of VS Ramachandran (what I remember, anyway, I read the book in 2001). The prose isn't as lyrical, which isn't a wholly bad thing. Thomson blends case studies with a direct look at the underlying neuroscience, slightly simplified for the benefit of people outside the field. It's been some time since I was in it myself, and I was totally comfortable with the language she used. If anything, I would've liked more technical depth, but that's my standard complaint for any pop sci book.At any rate, because of things like ethics, naturally occurring disorders are one of the main ways through which we specifically understand human brain function, so it's always worth perusing case studies. I didn't find this to be personal to the point of salaciousness or technical to the point of being like a textbook, so it's a decent in-between.

Peculiarities within our brains sometimes lay undiscovered, such as when we experience different qualia. We tend to focus on much more obvious and exceptional manifestations of abnormal behavior as these capture our attention and elicit greater interest. This book explores these more exotic instances of brain behavior and examines possible etiologies.I used to believe that the way I perceive color was incorrect as I tend to see color somewhat differently than others. I no longer believe this. The author explains that each of us naturally interprets sensory experience differently and, not necessarily, incorrectly; just more personally due to our individual wiring. I found myself imagining what would be considered normal if the majority of us were synesthetes. The author sometimes retraces familiar territory but, as it adds necessary context needed to further develop her analysis, it is understandable.“I feel your pain” is taken to a whole new level as we enter the mind of a true empath. Visiting the walking dead is a little creepy but apparently a real condition. Hallucinations, jumping lumberjacks, and “shapeshifters” (my term, not the author’s) are a few of the other characters you will meet in this interesting, entertaining, and, yes, troubling foray into our inner world of mind boggling perplexities. If you enjoy and appreciate looking into the strange and even macabre underpinnings of our neurological quirks, and would like to see how others spin our current take on reality, this would be a good choice.

So well written and engaging, this book opens your eyes to the wonder of the human brain and how different people can "see" things so differently. My husband said that it explained why he hates doing l concentration games with the little ones...he has no mental map to call upon to find the matching cards! Yet, he never gets lost in the woods....Very interesting and not overly technical, very enjoyable.

The author meets and describes individuals from different countries with what appear to be strange psychiatric conditions. She bonds with them, and then consults with neurologists to provide a medical perspective. Her aim is not to present a catalog of curiosities for us to wonder at, but rather to reveal the commonalities we share with her subjects because of our wondrous brains.

The book had some interesting case studies, but no overall message emerges.

Amazon Best Sellers Rank:

#103,467 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

I am very happy that inexpensive versions of Leaves of Grass are available again. I have purchased eight different versions to compare. Many are very poorly put together - almost like scanned versions simply plopped into a word processor and uploaded to Amazon - and selling for $10 - $1. What I find most fascinating is this one - by Martino Fine Books (listed as Leaves of Grass ; {exact Facsimile of the 1855 Edition] - it is very fine, and is an exact facsimile. I love holding it and looking at it as close to the original 1855 edition as humanly possible. The only caveat is the cover - which features the older Walt, who had published six more versions by the time the cover photo was taken. No matter, the inside is what's important. Another one I bought that I recommend is from cholla needles press (listed as Leaves of Grass: 1855) - they use a facsimile of the original cover, and have made the choice to clean up the line breaks for readability purposes. The cholla edition is easy to sit down and read, the martino edition is beautiful to look at. The good news is I bought them both for less than $10 and find that reasonable enough to give them both to friends and relatives as gifts this year.

Kindle Buyer Beware! If you think you are buying the Library of America edition (which links to this Kindle version on the Amazon page) you are not. This is a completely different version. If you are looking, specifically, for the First Edition (1855) of Leaves of Grass - which is given prominence of place in the Library of America edition -- you will not find it here. As for the rest of the material, it may well be fine but it is NOT the Library of America -- a series renowned for its editorial care. It is, in fact, published by Heritage Illustrated Publishing from materials in the public domain. No essay by Justin Kaplan, no page numbers, and notably ugly typesetting. There are better Kindle general editions of Whitman's poetry for less (Bantam Classics, for instance). Amazon misleads its customers by putting this generic edition on the same page as the scholar-worthy Library version of which it claims to be a reproduction.

This review is only for the Wisehouse Classics edition. There are a number of typographical errors within the book. For instance, the word "of" is exchanged for the word "or" a number of times in "Song of Myself," altering the meaning of certain lines significantly. It's extremely unfortunate that Amazon has combined the reviews for so many different editions of this and other books. While they may sell more books, it makes it very difficult for customers to find a good edition to buy, and it makes me much less likely to buy from Amazon in the future.

I am torn on my reaction to Whitman's magnum opus-- its themes and words will remain unforgettable, but boy how I hated reading this plodding rambling slog of a book.Whitman's poems catalog his transcendentalism-inspired view of... everything. From scenes across the world, with particular focus on America, to anecdotes of dying soldiers and copulating couples, Whitman emphasizes the interconnectedness of humanity and nature. While Whitman's enthusiasm is infectious, he lacks brevity. He repeats his philosophy like a club over the head. The final product could've been cut in half and still have gotten across the message. But darn if there aren't moments of beauty. Particularly in the later poems which were added in his later years, Whitman tempers his enthusiasm with more brief, succinct, thoughtful, and hopeful words in the face of impending death. And I think that is the best occasion for Whitman's leaves: when one needs comfort that there is indestructible purpose and beauty in every human's life.

Except for school and college, classical poetry is dead. Poetry mutated into pop lyrics and is the teritory of the pop star or rapper. Nobel prize for literature goes to Bob Dylan, testifying to this metamorphosis. Reading classical poetry not for a credit or a paper is weird. Writing poetry review is even weirder. And writing a review of an indisputable genius, is much much weirder! In a way, reviewing Whitman is a bit like reviewing the Bible. What can one say about the American national icon? All that said, here it is...It is the first time that I read most of the Leaves Of Grass and not just the few chosen poems, or even just a few lines. And I must admit that I get rather tired reading very long poems, or poem cycles, so I do skip a few pages here and there. Moreover, the ever repeated paeans to America the Great or The States as a light unto nations strike to day as corny and pretentious. And lets not forget the language - antiquated, often odd syntax, words long out of circulation. And yet, counting everything in, FIVE STARS galore!!! What is amazing about Whitman is his tireless energy, zest for life, and above all, his inveterate optimism. This is a man born not long after the War of Independence and saw the terrible ravages of the Civil War (1.4 million dead out of 70 million population! WWI, WWII, Korea and Vietnam seem like games compared to that carnage), saw slavery, saw the Indian genocide, saw toil, hunger, sickness, and yet happily sung the glories of the Body Electric and heard America Singing. Whitman loved everybody - men, women, young, old, white, black, healthy, sick, good or evil, cities, bridges, plants, animals, stars. Some of his enthusiasm is way not PC in our present age - praising the soldier, the hunter, the butcher, the conquerer (ergo the rapist) of nature. In my opinion, Whitman is a giant and a giant he will remain in spite of the PC hordes.

This is the one to buy when you want everything Walt Whitman had published as "Leaves of Grass." So many versions -- including, I'm sorry to say, the expensive leather-clad "heirloom" editions -- leave out the homoerotic 'Calamus' book and so many other instances of sexuality that they emerge less than half the full page count.
