About the Author

Rodrigo Quian Quiroga holds a Research Chair at the University of Leicester, UK. He is the director of the Centre for Systems Neuroscience and the Head of Bioengineering at the University of Leicester. He graduated in Physics at the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina and obtained his PhD in Applied Mathematics at the University of Luebeck, Germany. Before joining the University of Leicester in 2004, he was a post-doctoral fellow at the Research Center Juelich, Germany, a Sloan fellow at the California Institute of Technology, USA and had short stays at RIKEN, Japan and the University of Nijmegen, The Netherlands. He has held visiting positions at the Leibniz Institute for Neurobiology in Magdeburg, the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) in Trieste, Italy, the University of California Los Angeles, the California Institute of Technology, the University of Buenos Aires, and CONICET. He obtained a young investigator award by the American Epilepsy Society, in 2010 a Royal Society Wolfson Research Merit Award and in 2014 he was selected as one of the 10 UK RISE Leaders in Science and Engineering.His main research interest is on the study of the principles of visual perception and memory. He discovered what has been named "Concept cells" or "Jennifer Aniston neurons", neurons in the human brain that play a key role in memory formation, a finding that was selected as one of the top 100 scientific stories of 2005 by Discover Magazine. His work has been published in about 100 research articles and has received world-wide media attention, including articles in The New York Times, The Washington Post, Scientific American, New Scientist, The Independent, and others. Neuroscientist Rodrigo Quiroga beguiles the reader with his fascinating accounts of how our very fallible memory machine attempts to function. In a series of nine short but absorbing chapters, much of the mystery of how the memory works is plainly described and illustrated. The writing is aimed toward the general audience with the intent to interest the lay reader in the dynamic ongoing research in neurobiology. Transversing the thoughts of how the mind and memory functions from ancient times to contemporary views, Plato, Aristotle, Simonides, Locke among others put in an appearance.. More recent work by Luria, Ebbinghaus, Bartlett, Loftus are a few who delve into the nature and unpredictability of memory. How memory is stored, retained, enhanced, along with details of the different types of memory serve as a background guide for the reader. The Jennifer Aniston Neuron that is part of the title is a new finding of a neuron located in the hippocampus that is capable of reacting to a concept. This area still requires clarification. While science fiction appears to transcend into modern reality, the final chapter deals with the distinction between androids and humans. It must be remembered that we are nothing but our memories.

I won a free copy of this book from Goodreads First Reads.This book was not quite what I expected, but great nonetheless. It is less about memory itself and more about how the brain works and by implication what a memory actually is. Engaging style and very light read even in popular science category. Fun examples and good descriptions of experiments. Also has a historical bent as it describes memory through the ages.

The Forgetting Machine by Rodrigo Quian Quiroga is a free NetGalley ebook that I read in early October.Unfortunately, Quiroga writes in more of a lit/research review style than really telling us all something new about cognitive psychology, neuroscience, memory, visual acuity, a human's capacity for intelligence, and the advent of android thought. Where he had me, though, was his own personal sentiment about the perishability of memory and the somewhat depressing thought about how someone's whole consciousness dies when their body does.

Mostly this book is about the brain, but the part about the memory and perception is absolutely uptodate and I found it clear explained and particularly interesting, as I had no idea there was an honest to God Jennifer Aniston neuron!La maggior parte di questo libro é dedicata al cervello ed alle varie modalità di processare le informazioni, poi c'é la parte sulla memoria che é fantastica ed aggiornatissima, dove ho scoperto che esiste veramente un neurone Jennifer Aniston!

A very good book for beginning to advanced knitters. Her explanations are very clear and concise. While I am not a beginning knitter, I bought the book to get the Einstein Coat pattern, and i have already made the baby size as well as the "Shape It" scarf and love both patterns.A lot of the value of the book for beginners is in the wonderful hand photos and explanations of stitches. Sally is a really good teacher.

As an on & off knitter for thirty-something years, I must say that this book has rekindled my love of the art of knitting. The patterns are truly simple enough for a beginner, but are also fresh & interesting to make. The Einstein coat really does make you feel like a genius! I knitted the Baby Albert (newborn) version as a gift & I think it's my best project of all time.My favorite things about the book:1. Techniques are presented as they come up & are clearly cross-referenced throughout the text. Only the knit stitch & slip stitch are taught here -- purl is saved for volume two -- but they are covered in great detail. Also the intricacies of casting on, binding off, and the many ways of increasing & decreasing are thoroughly illustrated. If a particular cast-on is needed, you'll be given the page # where it's taught. (I also liked that it tells us which cast-on is best for the pattern, or if it doesn't matter which cast-on is used. Most patterns just say "Cast on [X] stitches" and don't tell you which cast-on style you should use.)2. A generous range of sizes are presented. There are lots of us who don't fit into a S-M-L world... 'nuff said. Women's and men's sizes up to XXL.3. Samples are shown in different yarns & colors. The author points out that most projects are made in the same yarn & color as the photo accompanying the pattern! Which, of course, yarn companies have relied upon for years. Here, yardage requirements are not given in # of skeins, but in yards.4. Step-by-step instructions are clear, complete, & concise. I learned quite a few new things, including a much better joining technique than the one I have used for decades. I am finally happy with my seams :-)5. Many cool projects! Some are youngish, some are classics, some are funky & asymmetrical... truly a little something for everyone. Too often we buy a book for a single pattern, which seems like such a waste. This one, I have either knit or have plans for six, count 'em, of the patterns. For now. There might even be a couple more later ;-)Thank you, Ms. Melville; your book has turned me into a black-belt knitter. My techniques have improved vastly and I feel like a real expert. I'm recommending this book to everyone who sees me with my needles and sighs, "I wish I knew how to knit."

I read all the reviews before purchasing this book. So, I bought the book and was impressed. I couldn't believe how much this book helped me. I have made scarves, hats, and used double pointed needles for the first time because of this book! And I didn't die or run screaming from the house!I think the only reason anyone would write anything negative about this book would be if 1. They were looking for items that are much more difficult (ie. lace, cable stitches, etc) or 2. they didn't want to believe that simple patterns could look so nice, or maybe 3. they didn't write the book or create the designs! (gryn)I have quite an eclectic taste, and am quite picky about projects I choose. That being said, I really like classic designs as well as funky/fun. I think these designs are great for all ages. My teen friends found items they want to try, my older friends found modest items they could knit and be comfortable with. And my four year old wants one of everything....well almost.The thing I LOVE about this book is that she gives you everything you need to move forward and get creative with what is in the book. Maybe you want to put fun fur on the edges of a project, or maybe you don't want sleeves. Once you master the techniques in this book (or even before) you could change the designs (and colors) to fit you, your taste, your needs.Oh, one more thing. This isn't just for those beautiful size 3 or even size 8 people. It is for all of us from infant to 3 or 4X...Men too! So buy this book and know that you will know more and make more for yourself and others when you have read this book!

Ever since knitting has become hip, there has been a small explosion in the number of knitting books. Most of the books for beginners are pretty much the same--they feature basic directions and then instructions for a couple of scarves and the like. Melville has taken a different approach, in that she has divided her knitting tutorial into several volumes. This one covers the first steps, especially casting on and the knit stitch.The fact that this book has a relatively narrow focus means that it is able to cover its topics in much more detail. There is a real wealth of information here, and the instructions are clear. Even advanced knitters may find some of the instruction useful.Another advantage of this book is that the projects it contains are more sophisticated than in most beginning books. You wouldn't think there would be much interesting you could do with only garter stitch and a single color, but there is.I highly recommend this book (and its sequel, The Purl Stitch, as well) for beginners and for more advanced knitters who want a good reference source.

Truly perfect pie recipes are coming out of this book! Never having baked a pie "from scratch" I've always been intimidated by the crusts and complexities of producing a great pie. Perfect Pies started me out ground zero and every recipe I've tried has earned five stars from my family! The recipes are easy to follow and have produced stellar pies - tonight's pie is the Lemon Chiffon. Could you hold a moment while I groan in ecstasy as I take a bite of my pie?The novice could definitely bake a pie with Michele's direction. This book has recipes ranging from the easy to the more difficult even challenging the seasoned baker. My husband is ecstatic over my newly found pie baking kick. The pie recipes run the gamut of flavors and textures and there are pies of every kind. I heartily recommend this recipe book to anyone with a sweet tooth and "hankering" to bake a pie. Do it!

I originally purchased this at Thanksgiving for the Maple Pumpkin Pie recipe - which was absolutely fantastic!! I cannot say that I processed my own pumpkin to make my pies as she does (maybe next year!) but I did follow her recipe and used canned organic pumpkin and still got rave reviews. Since then, I have made 3-4 other pies from the book and again, they have all been fantastic. I can hardly wait for the summer fruit to come in so that I can try out her fruit pie recipes. I would highly recommend this wonderful book!

And I thought I made great pies. This lady taught me a thing or two in the first few pages. Each one of her recipes that I've tried is a treasure! I quickly added them to my personal recipe collection. Everyone comments on her delicious pie crusts. Men love pies. This book is a good investment. I'm going to try her pumpkin pie for Thanksgiving. It will be a first for me to bake a pumpkin instead of opening a can of Libby's.

I am a pie maker and this book just adds more, yummy recipes to my recipe book! I love how they tell you the level of expertise needed for each pie. It also includes savory and quiche recipes. A great book!

The pies are so taste.....even my 86 year old mom has this book and made these wonderful pies....had to buy so I could make whenever I wanted

This is going to be short and (not so) sweet. I ordered this cookbook because it was published by the same folks who just completed David Venable's new cookbook, which, by the way, is outstanding. Having said that, I was immediately disappointed in Ms. Stuart's cookbook because it is almost photo-free. The recipes appear to be clear and concise and I certainly appreciate the pie crust photo intro. However, there are hardly any photos of the completed pies. While the artsy fartsy photos of a stack of ceramic pie plates, a stillife of whisk, or all Ms. Stuart's blue ribbons are pretty, to me it is more important to show what the completed recipe should look like. To be fair, there ARE 16 photos of completed pies amongst all the numerous recipes, and I found the helpful hints great. In the future, please go the extra mile to produce more photos of the pies. Even if you wanted to save some dollars by showing one page of all the completed pies, that would have been helpful. JMHO As always, Amazon.com did an excellent job by offering the best cost for the book not to mention their terrific shipping.

This is a collection of great down home recipes of pies I’ve enjoyed since I was a child. The recipes are easy to follow and the book has great tips and info that help make you a better baker!

I saw this book and the author on a television show, saw her interview. I immediately came to Amazon to find the book, (at a better price, btw) and ordered it right away. My granddaughter and I baked a lemon meringue pie and a pecan pie for Thanksgiving Day and they both turned out Grrrrrreat! She is learning to bake and I'm happy she is learning to make pies "from scratch".

Fun, simple, and godly to read with your little ones!!!!! Will read again and again. I highly recommend and look forward to another book by this author.

I like this book because it rhymes. I like it because the mom was being funny. I like it because it was easy for me to read.

My grandson liked the animals in the book. He's in first grade and learning to read. These words provided just the right stimulation without the frustration of being too hard.

Wish I had know this book was religious before I paid for it. Felt like propaganda. It would have been very cute if that had been left out.

I purchased this as an easy reader for my 5 year old. I was pleasantly surprised to find after purchase that it was Christian based. I loved the use of scripture at the end and will be on the look out for more like these.

My first son received a copy of this from his preschool years ago, If I recall the author came to read it at the school. He's too old for mom to read to him now, but this was one of his favorites when I did. We read it so many times that we made a game out of whether I could read it without looking at the book! (I did) This book was our 'last book of the night' and I still recall tucking him in with a "kiss and a hug" each night.Delightful, wonderful book, that was just fun to read.Highly recommend :-)

About the Author

Though no one in his family is Deaf or Hard of Hearing, Dr. Joseph Garcia has always been interested in gestural language and began studying American Sign Language (ASL) in 1975. He soon began using it extensively in his personal and professional life, and eventually became a Certified Interpreter. As he became more involved with the Deaf community, he soon noticed that hearing children of deaf parents started communicating with sign language at an earlier age than hearing children did with spoken language. Intrigued by this observation, he decided to research early childhood language acquisition and the part that sign language might be able to play in the process. He chose this topic for his graduate thesis in 1986. As his research proceeded, he uncovered a great deal of information about deaf children and their language development, but could find little on hearing children using ASL signs (i.e. hearing children of deaf parents, children with deaf siblings, etc..) He began investigating the results of using ASL signs as a method of early communication between hearing children and their hearing parents, and how signing affected the onset of expressive language in preverbal infants. What he learned was that babies who are exposed to ASL signs regularly and consistently, starting at six to seven months of age, can begin using signs effectively for meaningful two-way communication by the eighth or ninth month. They will also clearly understand the meaning of the signs quite some time before they actually initiate them on their own. During the last 30 years, Joseph was principal investigator for 109 private research grants. He has developed teaching and training materials for youth-related projects in the health care industry. He was appointed to and served two years on the Alaska Governor's Committee on Employment of The Disabled. He has continued to be active in the Deaf community. Dr. Joseph Garcia is the author of the definitive book on signing with your baby and baby sign language using ASL signs, called, "Sign with your Baby."

My father had a couple friends who were deaf, so I grew up seeing sign language used, so when I heard about teaching babies how to sign, I bought this book. I started using ASL with my son at 9mo, and at 4yo we still sign! I've seen other books that use non-ASL sign language, and that seems quite silly to teach your child a language that isn't official, especially seeing that my son still uses some of the signs he's learned.This book was very easy to read and use, and is perfect for anyone who hasn't had any experience with signing. I've given this book to 4 couples as baby shower presents, and they've loved it.I firmly believe that using sign language with my son before he could speak reduced the "terrible twos," because it gave him a way to communicate his needs and wants to us. We used signing in conjunction with speaking, and siging didn't hinder his speach development at all. In fact, I think it helped him start talking sooner. A friend of mine started signing with her daughter at 2yo who DID have speech development problems, and this actually helped reduce her daughter's frustration while they did speech development "exercises."

I purchased this book for my two grandchildren when they were 6 months old. One lives in Texas & the other lives in Alabama so we were able to see 2 different families put this book to use. Both girls began signing back to their parents within 2 months for "milk," "juice", & "more." They are now both 15 months old and I just had the opportunity to spend the past week with one of the girls. I was absolutely amazed to see how she has learned to communicate with sign language. Both mothers say this book should be on every expectant parent's wish list and if you put forth the effort to teach you baby to sign the rewards will be tremendous.

My niece loves it. Teaching her son sign language because I am deaf.

The whole concept of being able to have meaningful communication with your baby before language develops is so important. A parent longs to be capable of understanding needs and observing the environment with their baby/toddler. How rewarding to find something simple that really helps that social interchange take place early.

So, all you busy parents out there--this is a good and user-friendly manual. The biggest issue is for the busy mom and dad to find the time to read it, learn it, then teach it. I haven't looked at the other books out there, however, this one seems like an excellent resource to me. I got it for my son and wife. As of yet, it's still on the shelf...

Most of the signs were not for baby I was looking for something more baby friendly. More a story not many signs.

My daughter requested this as a "stocking" present at Christmas because some friends of hers had such a good time teaching their baby to sign. She wanted to do the same thing. It works, and it's super-thrilling to watch your baby pick up signing. As an interractive activity with your child, you can't beat it.

St. Alphonsus Liguori completed this spectacular book of Marian dogmas, dolors, and devotions in 1750 at the height of his powers:"The body of the book is divided into parts, the first of which consists of a phrase-by-phrase exposition of the Salve Regina, followed by prayers to Our Lady, a series of shorter tracts on various Marian feasts, dolors, virtues, and devotional practices.... St. Alphonsus's approach displays a clearly thought-out method of presentation that provides a strong measure of internal unity. Most of the parts that make up the Glories of Mary follow a fourfold method of (1) theme, (2) exposition, (3) example, and (4) prayer. This method immerses his readers in the tradition of the Church and encourages them to think the great thoughts the saints have thought about Mary, to read how others have tried to express their love for her, to pray as they have prayed, and, in doing so, to develop a lasting devotion to the spiritual Mother of all believers. This is a magnificent book on Our Lady. I can hardly put it down and the EXAMPLES throughout are inspiring.

St. Alphonsus Liguori (1696 - 1787) uses very intense language in this long love letter to the Blessed Virgin Mary. It's a work of beauty and devotion, with stories and legends meant for the edification of people from another place in time; parts of "The Glories of Mary" may not resonate with some modern ears, but it resonated with mine. Although there are serious (and very excellent) Church teachings scattered throughout, it is not fundamentally a theologic or apologetic work: it was written more to move the heart than the mind.There are 7 parts to the unabridged edition I'm reviewing (Liguori Publications; Revised edition October 1, 2000):1. Line by line commentary on the Salve Regina2. Prayers to Our Lady (including The Rosary of Our Lady's Sorrows, covered in more depth in Part 4)3. Sermons on the Principle Feasts of Our Lady4. The Sorrows of Mary5. The Virtues of the Blessed Virgin Mary6. Practices of Devotion in Honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary7. Further ExamplesSt. Alphonsus follows a four-step formula in covering most of the material: (1) theme, (2) exposition, (3) example, and (4) prayer. He introduces a topic, develops it in depth using the devotional writings and sayings of the Fathers, Doctors, and saints of the Church, and then provides a story or two to illustrate his point, and a specific prayer for Our Lady's grace pertaining to the particular topic.As mentioned earlier, this is primarily a work of devotion and therefore not the book I'd give a Protestant to explain the Catholic veneration of Mary; just as I would not give "The Imitation of Christ" to an atheist to explain the rational underpinnings of Christianity. This is the book you read after the light goes on and you realize that for Christ to be King, His mother Mary has to be Queen. That's the way God chose to do it.If you're Protestant and want to try reading this book with an open mind, you have to have a proper rational foundation for the veneration Catholics give Mary. It's vital to understand that there are three modes of veneration or worship we, as creatures, can render. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, these are latria, dulia, and hyperdulia. Latria is addressed directly to God. It is superior, absolute, supreme worship, "the sovereign worship due to God alone"; addressed to a creature it would become idolatry. When worship is addressed indirectly to God - when its object is the veneration of martyrs, angels, or saints - it is called dulia. Veneration of the Blessed Virgin, who has a "supereminent" rank among saints, is called hyperdulia. Dulia and hyperdulia are given, therefore, with the knowledge that we are offering it *to* God *through* the creature: praising God's creation in this framework has always and forever been but praise for God Himself.For those outside the Church who put little stock in its whole Deposit of Faith, and choose to use only a part of it - the holy books chosen and approved by that same Church, otherwise known as the Bible - there absolutely is a basis for venerating Mary. I'll explain just one of them here, but if you really have a heart to find out more, there are plenty of books and resources on the subject.In Chapter 1 of Luke, we have the Annunciation: Mary is full of grace; she is highly favored by the Lord. So highly favored in fact that the Holy Spirit will come upon her and the Son of God will be incarnate in her womb. The implications of this are staggering:* All of Jesus' humanity - his DNA - comes from Mary.* Jesus, the ultimate source of all grace, whom God could have formed from the dust as he did Adam for his human nature, instead comes to us through Mary - she was chosen to be the channel through which comes all grace.* God honors Mary like no other creature; as He must: it is his own Commandment (the fourth.)* Remember what Jesus' saliva mixed in mud did for the blind man; Mary's very blood coursed through the Son of God, thereby consecrating her as no other creature, not even the Angels in Heaven.* She was without Original Sin, protected by the Fall at the moment of her conception: she had to be, as the Son of God could not be made of flesh that was at any time held captive by Satan. Why would any Protestant want to refute this point? It only impugns Christ to say or think otherwise.* The Holy Spirit is married to Mary in a mystical but very real manner (unless you would prefer to believe He would impregnate her out of wedlock), and the Song of Songs is to be read, on one level, in this light.* The Mother of God is a Queen; for who else gives birth to a King but a Queen?There are many more conclusions you could draw from this one scene in Luke on the fact of the incarnation. There are other scenes, especially the Wedding Feast at Cana in John. Once you begin to follow these threads you will, with prayer, eventually be led to the truth of the Catholic understanding of Theotokos.

Again, I have to say this is a wonderful, classic writing of St. Alphonsus, perhaps one of the best then and now.Written to enlighten Catholics about the greatness of the Mother of God, Mary, as a strong defense against the heretics of those times.It still is a need in our days, to have a master book of apologetics at hand. I recommend this book as a valuable one to read more than once, over and over! Such was his love for Our Mother!

This book is a must-read for EVERYONE! Also, this is a very good edition. It includes a Lourgori homily for every Marian feast day of the year which I think is awesome
