Over the years I've become frustrated at the lack of clear information about building projects that utilize propane. Â Few fuels are safer to work with when handled correctly. Tim Deagan has written for Make: magazine, Nuts and Volts, and other technical publications. He is a licensed Texas Flame Effects Operator and the Flame and Safety Coordinator for the Austin Mini Maker Faire. After years of building flame effects, aka "booshes," in the local Burn community, Tim began teaching classes called "Propane 101" and "Build Your Own Aluminum Foundry" to help other interested makers create their own projects. As a former firefighter in the Brent Volunteer Fire Department and captain of a Red Cross Disaster Action Team, Tim has always believed that the most exciting pursuits are at their best when safety is fully understood and becomes part of the culture. A great guide for anyone interested in learning about creating fire art. It covers everything from the very basics (propane, tools, etc), to easy projects (fire torch and pit) and then on to more advanced projects - like how to build large poofers, add electronic controls and more. Deagan's writing is clear, approachable and entertaining. He keeps a good focus on both safety and having fun, and his walkthroughs are excellent.This book is suitable for a total beginner as well as those who already have experience. I have taken fire arts classes, and worked on several fire art projects in the past and I still learned a ton from this book. Enjoy!

I wanted to make a propane-powered flame thing for an event like Burning Man. I'm an experienced maker, and have closely examined other propane flame effects, so I thought I knew what to do. But... it could be dangerous for someone with no experience.This book filled my need perfectly. It goes through some example projects in great detail. It also explains enough of the theory and general principles so it's clear *why* things should be done the way they are. I'm going to build one or two projects from the book to gain experience, then do my own.The book is clear, very well written, and fun to read. I highly recommend it.

Incredible book. It has all the details, all the engineering and science, neat projects, great advice. The author clearly knows his stuff, because he is pointing out safety issues and risky shortcuts in projects that appear in online pages and videos. This is a hefty dose of propane know-how.

Well written has good explanation of the why behind the rules. I have always been interested in fire effects but nervous about experementing for fear I would blow myself up. This book gave me the information I needed and the safety guidance to feel comfortable to experiment with some small fire effects.

This book comes off like a scare tactic. A giant list of everything that could go wrong and everything you should NOT be doing (and you’re damned if you are). It is not what I was looking for. If you want a fun book that tells you about your baby’s growth, your changes, and tips to help you out along the way, choose another book. (Or download the Bump app - that has turned out to be my go-to)

The cool part of this book is that it has a sketch for each week to show how the baby is developing, and how big it is, and so forth. I do like it for that reason.However, in overall tone it is extremely condescending, to which I'll return in a moment. It also might be a bit scary for some, as each week's chapter contains a list of every possible thing that could go wrong with your pregnancy. It's also a bit impractical in odd ways (do you really want to find out only near the END of the first trimester that electric blankets might mutate your baby [especially if used in the first trimester]?)But back to that condescending thing. It's to the point where it's kind of funny. "Make sure you eat healthy foods!" "You might be able to get a 'picture' of your baby, called a 'sonogram'..." "Make sure to wash your hands throughout the day!" "Don't use recreational drugs!" Well, duh.It treats mothers-to-be as though we are all careening stupidly on the knife edge of disaster but for this kindly intervention that is *for your own good*."You can't just eat anything you want." Puh-lease. You just try and stop me, Mr. Paper Doctor. I can and I shall eat anything I want--which is probably not that terrible to begin with, anyway. And I resent your patriarchal assumption that only you stand nobly between me and the monstrous results of my out-of-control female wishes!There's a particular phenomenon (as I tell my Psychology students) in which society tends to infantilize pregnant women, as though we aren't carrying infants, but becoming infants. (Despite the fact that pregnancy has been shown to actually increase IQ by a couple points. --Yes, ha ha, I'm still waiting.) This book definitely expresses that societal attitude.However, the effect is not restricted to the mums-to-be. In the authors' view, dads are apparently not only equally as stupid as mums, but are uncaring clods as well. There are one or two little paragraph-length text boxes in each chapter ("Dad Tip!") since clearly men can't be expected to read an entire book (because they're illiterate, on top of all that?)Dad tip: "Give your partner a lot of hugs." "Bring home flowers..." "Clean or vacuum the house without being asked." "...Change the litter box..." (This tip is in week 8, so the pregnant partner has already been handling dangerous cat feces for two months and it likely killed the baby, you illiterate uncaring clod!) "Remember to call her if you go out of town." "Pregnancy is a miracle despite headaches, morning sickness, and changing waistline." (Despite changing waistline?!)My husband and I started making up our own helpful tips for Dad in the same vein: "Try not to make fun of your partner for being fat, as often as you usually do." "Wait until she's done throwing up in the morning to tell her to make your breakfast." "Don't get drunk at home so much--go out to the pub." "Try not to be a complete ass, at least not ALL the time."Another humorous thing about the book is that each week it compares the baby's size to a food item: "Your baby is about the size of a pinto bean," "...a green olive," "...a peach," "...a lime." Which is a little disturbing. I'm not growing it to harvest and eat!Of course we had to start making up our own comparisons. "Your baby is about the size of a 1-pound box of expensive chocolates with gold wrapping." "Your baby is about the size of a succulent filet mignon, served medium-rare with sauteed mushrooms and onions."So all in all, an entertaining read, especially if one is a smartass.If you are only buying one pregnancy book, then get The Mother of All Pregnancy Books or The Unofficial Guide to Having a Baby. If you are stocking up, then go ahead and add this one to your pile. Try to take it a little tongue-in-cheek!

If you enjoy being scolded, talked down to, and generally not treated like a grown woman, then you'll love this book. My favorite part of this ridiculous book is that interspersed with the scoldings, there are genius "Dad Tips" along the lines of "Bring home flowers for no special reason!" and "Cuddle your partner, women love cuddling during this very special time!" WHAT?!?? Hallmark cards have more sophisticated relationship advice than that! Even Seventeen magazine wouldn't print such platitudes. To include them in this book betrays exactly what the authors really think of their readers - ie, not much.

Although I am a registered nurse with a bachelor's degree, my specialty is telemetry and not maternal/child, so I sought a book by an expert that would supply me with vital information I didn't have concerning my pregnancy.After reading the reviews here, I decided to buy this book over others. I was very disappointed after reading through the first half of the book, and not being able to continue because the book is so awful. It was really inaccurate, for example the grossly exaggerated claims about body temperature, the timelime for alpha fetoprotien tests ... and certain pieces of information that were actually true and important were in oddly misplaced sections. For instance, the discussion of caffiene, the advice on shopping for a new bra, the discussion on breast tenderness... all of those things were discussed way too late in the book. Caffiene should be avoided or cut to a minimum extremely early, not in the fourth month.My physician, who is a board certified OB/GYN and chief of staff of that dept. at the hospital, has instructed me that it is healthy to get exercise if you are a healthy person with a normal, healthy pregnancy. Doing exercise would certainly raise body temperature, and according to this physician's brief discussion of body temperature, you would be putting your fetus at risk. That's just one example, there's more that I can't get into with the limited space available.If I could, I would get a refund on this book. I wouldn't recommend it to anybody. You're better off reading literature that your physician supplies to you, such as the magazines and pamphlets.

I got this for my first pregnancy along with several other books; it was my favorite, as it had timely information for each week, and showed a illustration of what the baby would look like. Usually the information presented each week was appropriate, and I felt very prepared for my OB visits. The information is spread out over each week, but the index is comprehensive, and you can find it again, no matter which week you're in.The one thing that this book doesn't have is any information on what to do if you have various abnormal symptoms (i.e. bleeding), a chart for deciding when to call the doctor, or a cheat-sheet for if the baby starts arriving at home. However, usually you can and should go ahead and call your doctor if you have any worries whatsoever.Your Pregnancy Week by Week a great source for letting you know exactly when various parts of the baby are formed, how big the baby is, when the baby can see and hear -- I loved having this glipse into my baby's growth -- None of my other books had anything quite as nice. Plus had something to look forward to reading each week!

These wicked spirits work through the minds and bodies of humans to commit their crimes against humanity.For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. I really would like to commend Merrill Unger for his excellent work on demonic influence in the lives of believers. I had purchased his book titled Biblical Demonology several years ago, and while it was very well thought out it was a bit too heavy for the average reader to say the least. This particular book- What Demons can do to Saints- came highly recommended so I gave Mr. Unger another try..... And I’m VERY happy to say that I’m glad I did! Unger does a fabulous job explaining the nuts and bolts of just what demons can and cannot do to saints under various circumstances and why they are able to do so BIBLICALLY. The title is so simple but so descriptive of what this book offers the person who is interested in a VERY biblical as well as extremely practical guide to the demonic influence coming against both Christians and non-Christians. I found much of this information to be very true to life in my own personal experiences as well as in the experiences of others involved in deliverance or freedom ministries. It has something for every Christian no matter if they’re involved in this type of ministry OR just interested in what demons can actually do to Christians. And from my experience ALL Christians need to know what demons can do to the saints. This is a subject matter that is not taught in most any churches that you will find in United States unfortunately. I highly recommend this book. I’m thinking about doing it in my women’s morning bible study. I don’t often use extra biblical books in my bible study, but this is one I would strongly consider studying as a group in the future.

I've been studying spiritual warfare in this last year and have to say that there are over 100 good books about it for mainstream Christians, including charismatics and non-charismatics. My favorite authors are by Dickason Demon Possession and the Christian: A New Perspective , Warner Spiritual Warfare: Victory over the Powers of this Dark World, Bubeck, Ron PhillipsEveryone's Guide to Demons & Spiritual Warfare: Simple, Powerful Tools for Outmaneuvering Satan in Your Daily Life, Neil Anderson The Bondage Breaker®: Overcoming *Negative Thoughts *Irrational Feelings *Habitual Sins, John Eckhardt Prayers That Rout Demons and Break Curses , and now the sage Merrill Unger.If its one thing I learned about the topic of spiritual warfare, its to have a balanced and sound mind perspective. Extremes are what Satan loves to deal in. From the "can't touch this" mindset of uninformed mainstream Christians, to the wacky bizarre teaching of some "out there" teachers, where does one find good solid content on how Satan works today with you and I?Most non charismatic authors sadly only deal with the theological and theoretical aspects of spiritual warfare. Unger did this very thing in his first book on the topic, Biblical Demonology. Unger, however, like Solomon maturing from Proverbs to Ecclesiastes, moves from the theoretical to practical with "What Demons Can do to Saints". It is like his eyes were opened from the stodgy theologian to the learning newbie as God brought many authentic believers to him for assistance in demonization cases.Don't let the TONGUES or other "sensationalistic" issues sidetrack you from the truth. Bible believing charismatics will tell you that tongues are not the requirement nor focus of spriritual warfare, but to be used for giving glory to God. Unger doesn't speak against tongues in these anecdotes, only the motives of some people who seek experience over the GOD who is. PPL who know not this difference should not yet be asking for gifts of experience, but only to know Him and CHrist crucified. Asking for a gift for self I believe is humanistic , and is an impure motive and gives right for evil spirits to have toeholds in your life. I think that Unger says it well when he says that the Christian worker involved in expelling demons should be right with GOD, and be clean from bitterness and any form of uncleanness. Neil Anderson also teaches this.BUT I digress...Unger's book can serve as a launch pad for 80% of American Christians who believe in a real Satan, but believe that he is uninvolved in their personal lives. He produces a good balance of perspective, in that he certain has mastered theology with 100% of pastors having some form of his works (Bible Commentary, Bible Handbook, Bible Dictionary) in their libraries. SO he is VERY respected in conservative christian circles, but.... He chose to differ with some of the deeply conservative thinkers from Dallas Theological Seminary with spiritual warfare as to the extent that Satan can influence Christians. The scriptures do not say that a Christian is immune. Therefore one can use empirical evidence from experience. Unger does this in this book by sharing many amazing stories that seem unreal. I sense that he is the third party to most of the experiences, but God has(is) used/using him to use his reputation to convince the more theoretical theologians that his newly found claims have merit. If you find a point you disagree with, move on and ask what GOD wants to teach you and how you can achieve personal fullness by resting in the Holy Spirit's leading. If you find yourself reacting strongly, could it be that the truth is stirring something unholy in you, i.e. a foul presence?God wants us fully informed, alert, equipped, and holy. Although the battle is His, He expects us to put on armor take our minds back and do battle each day because we live in the world ruled by the Prince of the power of the air. McPherson's "Battle Cry" is arguably the best single-volume account of the Civil War. Nearly 30 years since its initial publication by Oxford, this book is still being used at the university level to educate students about the Civil War. McPherson not only wrote a masterful narrative, he also sourced the text impeccably. Further, I disagree with some previous reviews that the writer has a political bias or agenda, if you will. As a Civil War historian, I can confidently state that writing in a neutral voice about this period is one of the most difficult challenges an author faces. McPherson gives ample time to both "sides" of the cause and puts forth well-documented facts. Those who dispute his objectivity have ample resources, provided through detailed footnotes and an extensive bibliography, to research the author's claims.If you are just becoming interested in the Civil War or seeking to extend your knowledge, I cannot recommend this book highly enough. From novices to academics, this is the one book that must be on your shelf.

I have read at least 50 books about the Civil War. The Battle Cry of Freedom was the one book that tied everything together as to why we were at war in the first place. It is not just about the war itself but about those times in America where our attitudes were. The book ties in everything about the those times and the war itself and how one issue or battled lead to political issues that had a huge impact on decision. It really shows how strong Abraham Lincoln was in his determination not to give in and to preserve one nation. If you could read only one book about this troubling time in our country, this would be the book.

This is a very good one-volume history of the Civil War. It is much more than a military history, an endless litany of battles and military campaigns and strategy. Although it is partly a military history, it is also a social, political, economic, and diplomatic history of the Civil War period. It is a scholarly history; McPherson documents his conclusions, opinions, and quotes with voluminous endnotes. (Since this was an e-reader edition, it is rather effortless to tap on the superscripted numeral and view the endnote.)McPherson begins his history well before the outbreak of hostilities in 1861. The first chapter, “The United States at Midcentury,” takes a look at American society and politics in the 1850s. The American South “dominated the world market” for cotton. The industrial revolution was changing society, primarily in the North, as millions moved from farms to urban centers to work in factories. A religious awakening was sweeping the North generating moral and cultural reform movements, especially a push for the abolition of slavery, which would put the northern states on a collision course with the South. In the next few chapters, the author covers political events that were shaking the country in the turbulent 1850s. The Mexican War brought new territories into the United States, which exacerbated the ongoing debate over whether new states should be admitted to the union as slave states or free states. Pro-slavery and free-soil settlers were fighting and killing each other over slavery in the Kansas territory during the 1850s. And a new political party, the Republicans, arrived on the American scene and elected an unlikely western-born man named Abraham Lincoln as their candidate in the 1860 presidential elections. And to raise the stakes in this crucial election Lincoln was known to be an anti-slavery man.It is not until the very end of chapter 8, when South Carolina starts the Civil War on April 12, 1861, by firing on the federal fort at the entrance to Charleston harbor, Fort Sumter. The first eight chapters of this history are dedicated to the all-important task of laying the groundwork for an understanding of the events and ideas that led to this tragic conflict.Even for those very familiar with the battles that swept over the American landscape during the next four years, there is much to be learned from McPherson’s narrative. The author skillfully weaves into the war stories the social, political, and cultural context for these events. How did the war affect the people of the South where most of the battles were fought? How did they survive when their men went off to fight, when the value of their currency turned to almost nothing, when there was nothing in the stores to buy with their worthless money, when their slaves that did the hard work of growing their cotton and food crops ran away to follow the liberating Yankee army? And in the North, how did the people deal with the forced conscription that pulled young men from their homes, farms, and families? Many of these conscripts were recent immigrants. How did they cope with the demand that they risk their lives to save their new country? McPherson investigates all of these concerns in Battle Cry.This long book (almost 1,000 pages) pulls the reader into its narrative almost immediately. I found it hard to put down. Even though we all know how the war turned out, surely its participants did not. Those who were certain of triumph at the beginning (Jefferson Davis and seemingly most of the secessionists) turned out to be wrong. Those who felt a sense of doom and wondered if even God had deserted them (especially, at times, Abraham Lincoln) often ended in triumph. The reader, even viewing these events in retrospect, becomes engaged with the drama and feels empathy for the emotions of the actors is this great national tragedy.Note: I read this book on a Kindle. The battle maps in the Kindle edition are hard to read and of little use on my paperwhite Kindle, but show up clearly on a Kindle Fire.

I am a military historian and my opinion is that Dr. McPherson has written the definitive encompassing Civil War historical work. "The Battle Cry of Freedom" (supplemented with some of Dr. McPherson's related books like "The Atlas of the Civil War," and others) is second-to-none. I mean no disrespect what-so-ever to Shelby Foote's "The Civil War." Foote's works speak for themselves, no question. But because Battle Cry is written in such an engaging style that reads like a novel while extensively relating and documenting the historical intricacies of the times was, for me, a pleasure to read and study. I highly recommend this text for anyone, scholar or layman, who is looking for a descriptive and informed one-volume history of this tragic time in America's history.

The author divides techniques into 3 major sections: surface, midwater, and bottom. I love the deep dive into specific situations: for one type of water- which type of line, leader, and fly to use along with exact technique for presenting it. There is lots to be learned about the behavior of smallmouth, which is different from all other fish. I won't be as concerned with matching the hatch anymore and I won't be fishing on the bottom with crayfish as much. I will also be much more patient with letting flies sit- less is more.My only criticism is the repeated references to x-axis and y-axis water and presentations. Even though this is explained in the beginning I was often confused. I have reread the book 3 times now and am still uncertain what he means sometimes. Why can't he say "drift parallel to the bank"?This book is a triumph! The best money and time invested in fishing in a long time.

I have been fly fishing for 50 plus years and chasing river Smallmouth almost exclusively for the past six years. This is one of the top three books I have ever read on fly fishing for river Smallmouth. Written by guides that spend 90-150 days each year guiding clients - guides who make a living putting their clients on fish - this is perhaps the most technical treatise on the nuances of chasing this great gamefish that I have read to date. This book covers in detail the movement and holding positions of Smallies throughout the year as well as how to effectively fish the entire water column in terms of patterns and techniques. Full of knowledge and gorgeous color pictures, this book is a must read for all serious anglers that chase river Smallmouth with a fly rod. I have read this book from cover to cover twice and called one of the guides at the Tight Lines fly shop to discuss their techniques in more detail.

What if five smallmouth fly-fishing junkies got together and wrote a book? If that sounds like book-by-committee, that’s pretty much what we have in Smallmouth: Modern Fly Fishing Methods, Tactics, and Techniques. Thankfully the team behind it manages to avoid the proverbial camel. It’s a credit to chief word-smiths Dave Karczynski and Tim Landwehr that they make this amalgamation of anecdote and guide-tested technique, downloaded mainly from the staff of the Tight Lines fly shop in De Pere, Wisconsin (with a big assist from half-a-dozen other luminaries of the smallmouth fly-fishing world) hold together as well as it does.However. Let me point out a few of the consequences of ginning up a book this way.Let’s start with the fact that the editorial team presumes you do your smallmouth fishing mainly the way they do, from a drift boat. That’s nice work if you can get it, but if you mostly wade for your fish you’re going to feel like you’re on the outside looking in through much of this book. This is not to say a wading fisherman can’t learn a thing here, but if that’s you, know that the book isn’t talking to you. You’ll want to eavesdrop on the conversation for sure, but that whole thing about x- and y-axis rivers that other reviewers have commented on, for example, is meaningless outside the context of drift boat fishing. So if you wade, you can ignore it. You’re welcome.And talking is the word. The book reads like much of it was dictated into an iPhone. It’s full of the structures and idioms of vernacular speech. I counted 9 “simply put”s, 12 “first off”s, and a whopping 21 “that said”s. These and other verbal crutches don’t contribute a thing, and once you start to notice how often the authors deploy them, you wish you hadn’t. As guide talk out on the river, no big deal. But this is a book. There’s a difference.Pop quiz: How many “columns” does the water have? I’d have said one, and you can fish at the top, the bottom, or somewhere in the middle. In this book, “column” sometimes means the continuum from top to bottom, and sometimes it means a slice of the continuum, as if there are three different “columns,” as in expressions like “the middle column.” Conceptual inconsistency like that is going to creep in when there are multiple guys doing the conceptualizing.Something that may surprise many readers is the complete absence of fly patterns, to say nothing of tying instructions. It’s pretty remarkable these days to come across a fly-fishing book that doesn’t so much as hint at fly-tying, “the other part of fly fishing,” as Dave Whitlock so aptly put it. The photo plates feature a lot of professionally tied and shop-sourced flies that you’ll need quite a bit of skill to build for yourself. Or, I suppose, you could order a few from the aforementioned shop up in Wisconsin. Hey, I have nothing against product placement in the story; it’s the way of the world these days.So that said and simply put, this is a solid effort by a bunch of guys who know their stuff and don’t think of smallmouth fishing as something to do when the trout aren’t biting. Good on them. If you share their enthusiasm, you may very well find this book worth your while, not to mention your dime. I bought the Kindle version and I think that unlike some others, it’s one book that doesn’t lose a thing in that format and maybe even gains by it.

The book itself is beautiful how ever the information inside is very repetitive and reads like a thesauruses and at one point even the authors where confused about there diograms
