We're big Daniel Pinkwater fans in the house. My husband read this one as a child, and we picked it up this summer so my son could read it (age 7). It's ridiculously silly, full of adventure, and was up to the usual Pinkwater standards.I only gave it 4 stars because my favorite Daniel Pinkwater (written under the name D. Manus Pinkwater) was Lizard Music and in my opinion, nothing ever could top that!

Pinkwater is fun even for grownups. This is great stuff to read to the kids.

The story is funny and the illustrations are very amusing.

One of Pinkwater's best. This is a must read for every 10 year old with a sense of humor. Actually, it also entertains the adult who happens upon it. I also recommend "Slaves of Spiegel", "Fat Men in Space", and "Alan Mendelsohn, Boy from Mars".

Jersey and chickens.

Exceptionally silly and subversive, I loved reading this book to my kids and cracking up over the antics of Dirty Louise and the cast of characters hunting her down. Fantastic!

THis is actually one where I liked the movie better (Wonderworks did one maybe 20 years ago now, and it might just be nostalgia that makes me love that).Pinkwater is genius, and this is a good book-- it's just not the GREAT book I was hoping for.

Hilarious book, read it as a kid and bought it for my nephew.

I read Andy's first book and thought it was great. This book includes the next ten years of his life. Andy's trials and tribulations from 25-35 make it look like the first 25 were a walk in the park. I do not want to write a spoiler review, but between the Wish for Wendy, fertility issues, losing a friend, and struggling with depression, it is amazing what he has done. You will find yourself cheering for the Author.Even better is that the proceeds for the book go to CF fund. Thank you for the follow up to the first book.

Well-written, easy to read, and inspiring. Andy does a fine job explaining what it is like to live with CF - both the physical and mental challenges. My wife has CF, and the book got her to make a long-term committment to start an exercise program.I think the book is an obvious draw for people effected by CF, but I think a general audience would find it a good and inspirational read as well.

My son is 18 with CF and depressed and down in the dumps and doesn't do his neb treatments regularly. This book gave me such a vision of what he is truly feeling inside. I feel like my son is just like Andy. Andy had to get the that point on his own in his own time that he really would beat this illness and be positive and I pray to God my son will get there on his own some day too because I realized we can't get him to that point ourselves he has to realize it and want it for himself. Wonderful book to any family of a person with CF or a person who has Cystic Fibrosis. I'm hoping my son decides to pick it up one day and read it !

It gave me a great understanding of CF. He shared so much and I really enjoyed this read!! This book makes you want to meet Andy in person and continue following his life.

After recently loosing my brother to Cystic Fibrosis this was a great book. I hope they can find a cure for Cystic Fibrosis.

This is a great book. My granddaughter is 9 months old and was diagnosed at 2 weeks with CF. I recommend this book to anyone with a family member struggling with the disease. It's very inspirational!!

The book is written very well and has short chapters for easy stopping points. the book is not of an overwhelming size and it is a quick read. i recommend this book to anyone who can read.

Andy Lipman has written an ispiring story about his life with cystic fibrosis. He discusses his early childhood, life at college and with a fraternity. He is candid about his bouts with depression and how he works through this. The story has a happy ending when he meets his wife Andrea and has two children through IVF. If you are interested in IVF, he goes into a lot of detail that would be helpful for those couples considering it.Andy writes about his sister Wendy who died of cf before he was born and how she motivates to start "Wish for Wendy", a successful fundraiser for cf.I encourage everyone to read this book and to become inspired by Andy.

What a great work of fiction. Feeling ashamed that I had never read this novel but heard so much about it, I finally got a copy and burned through the pages in 3 days. It certainly lived up to its name and legacy. The writing is to the point, Hemingway-esque, and rarely slows. Every fifth paragraph leaves one a jewel phrase or entire sentence that can qualify as a memorable quote. For example: "What do they expect of us if a time ever comes when this war is over? Through the years our business has been killing;--it was our first calling in life. Our knowledge of life is limited to death. What will happen afterwards? And what shall come of us?"In my opinion, the Nazis burned Remarque's books not because he changed his name to a non-German name, but because this book is filled with anti-war sentiment cloaked as it had to be in 1928 when this was first published. To have lived through war in the trenches as Remarque did, qualifies him to speak to the insanity of mass killing that is war.Let us all read his pages and imbibe the message of the cruelty and senselessness of war. I feel as if I want to go out and obtain a copy of every book Remarque ever published. Let his experience be our teacher; let his message endure. Let every school-kid in the world read and study these pages, so they come to know what war is. Let the decision-makers of the world pore over every passage, and ask themselves whether they will send their children to war. Let Remarque's works guide their decision.Truly a classic.

There are books you read in your youth deemed classics that one is unable to fully appreciate until you've grown up, gained a greater appreciation of both life and the context that produced such works. Without a doubt, "All Quiet on the Western Fronts" is one of those novels. I read "AQOTWF" in 8th grade and remember liking the book. I generally do not re-read books, but after listening to podcasts and reading history on WWI recently, I wanted to go back and experience this book with better context.Remarque served in the German army during WWI and is able to elicit the type of imagery and feeling only someone as a witness and participant can conjure. The story is narrated by Paul Baumer, an 18 year old German, who enlists along with many of his other school mates. WWI marked a turning point, the advent of modern warfare driven by technological change, couple with armies comprised of general citizens and less of hired or mercenary fighting forces. Paul and his school mates immediately encounter this horror, different from the romanticized battles of yore that they learn about in school. Remarque doesn't choose to place the characters in specific battles, representing the reality of a large portion of the war on the Western Front. These battles were brutality and killing like the world had never seen, the bulk of it trench warfare, with sides progressed marked not by victory or defeat, but yards or feet advanced. Death is everywhere, soldiers fighting in trenches alongside dead bodies of their colleagues and human waste for days, sometimes weeks at a time. All of this is remarkably rendered throughout "AQOTWF" along with Paul's transformation from naive & willing enlistee to disillusioned and devastated participant.It is not just the physical that Remarque captures so poetically, but the emotional trauma. Some of the most poignant scenes take place off the battlefield. Paul's leave where he returns to his village is my favorite part of the book. We see the demons of a returning soldier, too traumatized to share the reality of the front lines with his family while they realize the different person he's become as a result of war. Essentially, Paul's soul is lost in spite of his physical body being unaffected. They termed it "shellshock" at the time, something we now refer to as PTSD. There are so many gut wrenching scenes of Paul and his friends confronting the reality of war, death and destruction at a point in life when they should be thinking about their future.If you haven't read "All Quiet on the Western Front", it certainly should merit your attention. Like me, if you've read it as a teen, it is worth revisiting as its impact with greater context and a life lived will make you appreciate this novel even more.

Truly sad story. At first a bit graphic but ok after the first few chapters. Some is moving, some is laughable, life experiences. Young school boys sign up to WW1 They go away as boys and those that do return, as what? They become men at war but without the normal experiences of being a teenager. They have no job or wife to return to but are too old for school. A generation lost. A particularly sad part for me was the main character returning home for a visit. He was so happy to leave the trenches for a while and see his family but when he got there he couldn't fit in or share his experiences with those at home. The only life he knew as an adult was in the trenches. And so many died, the futility of it all. It's not all doom and gloom, I thought i wouldn't be able to handle it but it really was an excellent read.

Fantatstic read. Wonderfully photographed. A great selection of vintage watches. There is enough technical info to be informative without becoming over done. Best of all is that this shows a personal collection that has grown, changed, and developed over the years. As a fellow collector this is what’s most memorable.

Great book for my 2nd graders to understand and learn subtraction. This book puts it down to their level using what they like especially boys using sharks and other sea creatures.

This is also an Accelerated Reading book.

The Sharks of Ocean City are trying to go to the state swim camp. Their coach tells them the city newspaper will sponsor the team if they can swim 75 laps in one day before the end of the week. The humorous story's plot hangs on subtracting double digits. The cutesy illustrations of fish in swimwear may be amusing to younger children, they did not appeal to me. This is another book in the MathStart series. It has suggested activities and names of some other skill-related books at the end.

This is an excellent book for anyone teaching ESL students or reading students of any age. It is also a good read for those interested in linguistics. This is a keeper.

I love this book. It's really interesting and helpful for those interested in linguistics, TESOL, or language education in general. I would, however, liked to have seen a chapter on script (written language/handwriting/etc).

Useful textbook for learning the basics of linguistics (phonology, morphology, semantics, pragmatics) and how to apply this to teaching students (both native speakers and second-language learners) the English language. The second edition is current and updated.

Helpful book when studying ESL and the intricacies of the English language!

A good book to learn about how language is acquired. It is really heavy in information so it definitely takes a little re-reading and highlighting.

The book was not made properly. After beginning the book and reading around the third chapter the glue started giving way and the book fell apart. The entire cover fell off by the time I was finished. :(
