Gr 6–9—The date is October 21, 1942, and somewhere over the Pacific Ocean a lone B-17 runs low on fuel. In order to avert a crash, the pilot and copilot choose to attempt to land the plane on the surface of the ocean amid 20-foot swells. They are successful, and thus begins the survival struggle of eight men in three tiny life rafts. Olson skillfully tells of the physical and mental torture the men endured, floating for 22 days with no protection from the elements and with limited amounts of food and water (two oranges, a small bird, a few fish, and a little bit of rainwater). Much of the narration focuses on Col. Eddie Rickenbacker's role in the men's survival. Some of the crew were eventually spotted and rescued by a search plane, while others were saved by people from the island of Funafuti. Only one did not survive the ordeal. The clearly written text is engaging and accompanied by numerous black-and-white photos. However, one sentence erroneously states that the president, not Congress, declared war. Clippings from newspapers and magazines are included in the back matter. World War II is a topic of perennial interest to me as are survival stories. This book happens to be both. This is the story of a group of U.S. soldiers on assignment to deliver a special passenger to the Pacific theater. While everything started normally, several things happened that lead to the crew and plane getting lost over the Pacific. They did everything in their power to find the island they were supposed to land on, but despite contact with the island and numerous efforts to discover their location, the plane eventually ran out of fuel and had to be set down on the ocean. Preparations for ditching the plane had been made, but in the rush to get out of the plane, most supplies, including all available drinking water and extra food were left behind on the plane. Using photographs, quotes, and first hand accounts, the author takes the reader on a remarkable journey with the eight individuals who suffered on the ocean on tiny rafts for three weeks. I appreciated the compelling story, but also the author's honesty. As the circumstances worsened, the eight men did not get along which is not surprising considering the stress of the situation. And even when they (all but one) survived they didn't all of a sudden have a close bond with each other. Unfortunately, the special passenger was famous, but not known for his tact or kindness. Eddie Rickenbacker rather bullied the others into surviving. Was that the best method? I can't say, I wasn't there, but it's something to think about and it's something that the author brings up in his author's note at the end of the book.. I really appreciated the author's note because Olson explains the problems with writing accounts of historical events based on the flawed memories of participants. This would be a great thing to share with students when discussing writing nonfiction. Overall,, Olson has created a very readable, compelling account of a little known event. He also does a nice job of placing the event in context of the numbers of men dying in the war at the time.

This is the older kids version of I Survived books. When a plane goes down the survivors must come together and survive extreme circumstances. It has a lot of suspense and moments that you want to keep reading. My son really enjoyed reading this story, after the initial 20 pages of introductions. I would recommend this book to kids who like survival books.

I teach reading so I ordered a classroom set for my classes. Even though many of my students are reluctant readers, they loved it! I did too especially since this nonfiction book deals with history and is so well written. The author portrayed the situation and characters so well that my kiddos came to class anxious to read the next installment in this story. It was so well received that the other reading teacher in my building also purchased a set of books. Win win!

This was summer required reading for my rising middle schooler so I purchased the ebook for my kindle. Having lived in Columbus Ohio for several years I had heard of Rickenbacker, but never his full story. This book filled in some blanks, and introduced me to his fellow castaways. I've never been enamored with war, but now will read more. I guess I also benefited from the required summer reading list

It's the kind of story you don't want to put down. It makes you feel like you are on the raft with them. We recommend it for anyone who likes a good action packed book. We learned more about the war and could imagine what it was like.

Got this for my 11 year old son for middle school reading and he loved it. So much he has moved to the next book Lost in Space.

My 11 year old son loved this book! He did his 5th grade book presentation on it. He told me all about it. It's a survivalist book and it's not too graphic. It's perfect for his age. It is a book about survival, so the book contains things that could be considered gross, unfortunate, sad, etc.

My 4th grader just dived into this book. Wonderful literature for kids who love adventure.

For every little girl with a dream (Young and Not So Young :-) ),, this is a must have for every library. Our daughter hasn't put it down yet. In fact I have not seen her with her cell phone or tablet in her hand since this arrived... HMMMM

Easy reading and lots of info on the serious racial discrimination in the state of Virginia and Prince Edward, country. Schools closed for five years to avoid compliance with the law.

But who knew how much work went into the meticulous mathematical calculations that placed our American astronauts onto the cover of modern history. Some of these hard working professionals were not only trend setters in their field, but they were also young African American women, who had determined their way into the National Aeronautics and Space Administration position by position, having to over-prove their brilliance every step of the way.Dorothy Vaughn, Mary Jackson, Katherine Johnson, and Christine Darden should be unforgettable.While quite interesting, this book did not seem written for "young readers", for the information is quite technical at times and more suited for a textbook than informal reading. However, it's a story that needed to be told and I applaud the author for telling it.

I love the stories and information in this book. Do not read it if you are expecting a smoothly flowing narrative story. Everytime you think you are about to hit a narrative and get some rising action, the author flips to another story. The timeline and details are great. Definitely a lot of research has been put into this book. It reads really dry. It is hard to keep the flow of the story. If you are interested in the time frame and subject matter it is a definite must read.

An awesome book. I would recommend this for readers of all ages! While the original Hidden Figures is an amazing book, it is almost more a reference than a story. The amount of detail is a bit overwhelming, even for the avid readers in my book club. And so, I believe that the Young Readers' Edition is a more accessible version of the book for the majority of readers.

Today..... in the year 2017.....it is amazing what we have missed or forgotten in our lifeline....this story is an eye opener for sure...I grew up in a home that harboured no prejudices of any kind...heard stories...but did not experience anything first hand...thank God we are moving in the right direction...just wish it was faster...

Great for Elementary/Middle school students.

I'm so proud of these women whose stories were finally told. I lived in the Hampton Roads area and never heard of these three phenomenal trailblazers in my history books. Katherine Johnson, Mary Jackson, and Dorothy Vaughn did their jobs with pride, grace, and dignity.

As a Certified Patent Valuation Analyst and a Certified Public Accountant with extensive experience, I have read a lot of books on business valuation and specifically intellectual property valuation, and for me this book is one of the best books on intellectual property valuation. I have used this book as a reference source in my patent valuations. At almost 900 pages this book provides an in-depth treatment of valuing intellectual property using cost, market, and income approaches as well as accounting and tax issues. It provides extensive discussions of court cases. It also provides an excellent chapter on valuing early-stage technology. It provides extensive coverage of licensing agreements including royalty rate determination and monitoring and auditing licensing agreements. It also has an excellent coverage of infringement damages. The book is regularly updated with a cumulative supplement. I highly recommend this book for a serious professional working in intellectual property valuation, licensing, and damages calculations.

I highly recommend this cumulative supplement as an accompaniment to Intellectual Property by the same author. I also recommend this book as a stand-alone even without purchasing the book to which it is a supplement. The cumulative supplement provides very valuable current information on the intellectual property landscape and dealing with risk and uncertainty in intellectual property valuation and licensing. It also contains new sections on royalty rates and license fees for technology and for pharmaceuticals and biotechnology. As a Certified Patent Valuation Analyst and a Certified Public Accountant practicing in valuation and royalty audit, I particularly like the new sections on the magnitude and meaning of royalty misreporting and intellectual property audit and management.

This book is probably excellent for the trained accountant or attorney. I am a lay person, and although I found many useful pieces of information, much of the information was over my head.

Fast shipment, this used book is no different to the new one, the content is also very impressive and informative, I have a feeling that this will be of great value to professional in IP businesses especially those from China:-)

After finishing the sample I had gathered enough useful info to purchase the whole book. I wish I had started a couple days before my interview or even a week before. It gives you lots of useful info on the whole process and how to come in prepared and not make a complete fool of myself. I had not been in an interview in over 20 years and I think it went well thanks to some basic info in here and knowing that you are prepared. Be kind.

I found this guide to be a very interesting read.Although a little lengthy, once I read the sentence “An additional goal of interviewing is to provide lifestyle insurance for you and your family.” made me want to read more.What I liked about this guide is that it didn’t just dwell on the questions and answers; it also touched based on the thought process and how to be proactive/productive in your career path.

Not enough substance. Boasts about giving you all you need to know for an interview in 90 minutes, but there is so little concrete, useful information you could glean all it has to offer in about five or 10 minutes. Save your $5. You can learn more from a quick google search on how to succeed in a job interview than you will learn from this guide.

It suggests how to much time you need to invest before your actual interview in order for it to be meaningful and what questions to ask the recruiter/hiring manager even before you set up the interview. The book is beautiful, no doubt. It has beautiful pictures, the cover looks luxurious and recipes are well explained. But it all stops here the macaron and filling recipes look so delicious in the book but reality says differently. The Laudree video on YouTube shows very clearly that they are making macarons the Italian meringue method using the hot sugar syrup but on the other hand the book shows all the French meringue methods. The macarons are always hollow. Their chocolate macaron shell recipe is guaranteed to result into cracked shells. Most of their filling recipes will yield the fillings so liquidy that one can easily drink with a straw! They do not specify the quantity of egg whites in weight so it cannot be accurate due to different sizes of eggs. I wish the author was sensible enough to specify the egg whites in grams just like the other ingredients. I recommend you will find better recipes on YouTube and I also recommend you not buying this product.

My Feelings on this product are mixed like everyone states there is not a recipe for each flavor as a matter of fact the majority of the ones I wanted to try have no recipes for them. There is only the basic recipes and then for some of the recipes on the back of the Photo there are small recipes written but a lot of the ones they chose weren't very unique and it felt like repeats for quite a few a bit like copy and paste. Its main saving grace are the images which are elegant and tastefully done as well as giving you a cute little paper poster that shows all of their macaron flavors.

I bought this book because I thought there would be a lot more recipes and advice on technique. Sadly, that was not the case. Please save your money and just look online for recipe. The book is filled with pretty pictures. The fore edge has gold paint or something on it. Also, seems like there is some type of glitter on the book. The item comes with a box and the book is wrapped in tissue paper inside the box. The book does not provide useful content as most of the materials are repetitive. As I looked at the recipes, I found that the ingredients were not ideal items that I would use. Ingredients listed were products that I do not have or wish to use I guess you could say. I was mainly interested in how Laduree made the rose macaron but that recipe was not include in the book.If I was able to return my book, I would in a heartbeat. I made the mistake of looking at the book months after I purchased it. I only looked at the book once.

This is a great book as a gift, but not so great as an instructional book for people that are serious with macaron baking purposes.Many recipes are redundant, where you can simply switch out one flavoring or two from the first few recipes - halfway through the book I can already predict a new recipe before even reading it. What disappoints me the most is that the book did not mention their suppliers like Pierre Herme did. I am very interested as to where Laduree sourced their ingredients, because when it comes to making something as simple as a flavored ganache, the quality of each individual ingredients becomes a lot more important as these few ingredients dominate the overall taste. You can follow the recipe perfectly but never produce an authentic Laduree macaron simply because you dont know what brand of ingredients to use - not even the chocolate. Another thing that blew my mind was that the recipe calls for a certain "number" of egg whites, but not the actual mass of it, when all other ingredients were listed with actual weighings. What the hell? A professional recipe book should have listed the weighings for the most critical ingredients, in this case the egg whites in macarons. To me this is an unforgivable mistake.Overall, the book is beautiful and is definitely worth the money. However in terms of content, I believe any other macaron recipe book can achieve, if not easily exceed, the Laduree book. So far my favorite Macaron book is still the Pierre Herme Macarons. Apologies for the grammer/typos - English is not my first language.

Just received a lovely bound book, but it's bound upside down!!!

This is definitely my favorite macaron recipe book!!! I love the presentation of the book. But if it's your first one making macarons, the instruction isn't that visual. Beside that, i can tell the difference between Laduree macarons versus another recipe book. Laduree macarons are so much better!!!!!

I was so excited to receive this book today. It came in the beautiful Laduree fashion you'd expect; gorgeous box with lovely pictures inside along with a fold-out list of every Laduree macaron they've ever created. Love at first sight! Imagine my surprise as I'm poring through the book only to find quite a few of their staple favorites were not included; where's the Salted Butter Caramel, the Praline, the Coffee? Not in the book; just a small mention of them. Don't get me wrong, there's no shortage of recipes; just disappointed that some of their most famous faves were excluded. Still a lovely book to look at with plenty of recipes to try.

Wanted this book for years and had my eyes set on it. Finally got it and it didn't disappoint! Everyone needs this book!

This book is informative in many ways. It is a delightful reference book. Statutes, laws, rules, regulations and the product itself have changed a great deal since the days I used to smoke marijuana recreationally. That was in middle and high school, long ago. I quit smoking it in 10th grade because it always made me way too paranoid all the time. I stayed clean of all drugs since then.Getting older and sicker has brought the medicinal plant, marijuana, back into my life for treatment of extreme muscle and joint pain, muscle stiffness, tendonitis and weakness brought on by Early-Onset Parkinson's Disease. I am only 51 years old, but my tremors had begun about 9 years ago around age 42 and have progressed. I was super skeptical that I would benefit from medical marijuana. I take PD meds too but they are strong, don't work as well as they used to after time, and have side effects. Since starting on medical marijuana, I have been able to reduce them from 5 times a day to 3-4 times, and experience very few side effects from them now. (I also must credit corrective chiropractic medicine for the amazing improvements I have experienced.)The Leafly Guide to Cannabis: A Handbook for the Modern Consumer (patient consumer, here in Florida, not recreational) is easy to read, has lots of pictures and seems accurate too. The book appears to have been written to cover a wide range of usage allowances determined by each State, so it is not specific to Florida Medical Marijuana. It does present many related topics though.The strain matters a great deal. From this book, you can learn about many of them, but not all of them. Different dispensaries carry different strains. Dispensaries are like franchises that carry a specific brand of strains that they grow. This book seems to cover the strains Leafly sells. Some are energizing; some help you focus, some bring on creativity, some ease pain, or bring on sleep for insomniacs or people with somnolence, like me. Learning about exactly which strain does what for your symptoms is important. I have not found the right one for my tremor yet, still experimenting, but for pain and other aspects of PD, it is miraculous. I was able to stop unwanted opioids immediately, after really needing them for about 4 months!!When buying weed off the street, you have no guaranty that the strain they say you are buying is actually what they call it. And there is no quality control. This has always been true. Today's medicinal approach is clearly superior. No paranoia to be found yet!For a living, I consult Compassionate Care patients because I can tell you; there is a huge learning curve. I work with clients pre and post-prescription, to advise and educate them on the ever-changing process for procurement. I study the original law and ever-changing rules and regulations regarding all facets of use, distribution and dosage, type of product (vape pen v. capsules v. topical creams) to guide my clients and keep them abreast of changes they may need to know about.Insurance does not cover medical marijuana, so it is expensive to see the doctor and buy the product. Prescriptions are written very differently from those for the other meds, and I help people weed through (no pun intended) the myriad of websites, processes, and choices, to see if it is right for them before they shell out the big bucks just to be evaluated by the prescribing physician. Most prescribing physicians are ignorant (not knowledgeable) of the effects of low or high THC medical cannabis and are hesitant to prescribe it because it does cause a "high", opting for CBD oils, which do not cause a "high." I am becoming somewhat of an expert on these matters so that I may assist my clients who need to consult a professional so they may be more knowledgeable when they speak with their physicians. Physicians are often too busy to give you an education, which is where I come in. I also help those that are computer illiterate and could use a hand with that, especially older folks. I am finding the book to be quite a good resource, and I recommend it highly to all my clients to ease them into a possible acceptance of using the once taboo marijuana as a medicine. It covers many topics with how-to instructions, which is a great learning tool for the novice.There is a lot to learn if you are thinking about trying medical marijuana - way more than you thought - so starting with good resources is of utmost importance and will save you money and time in the end.

I work for a doctors office with mostly senior patients. Many of them with chronic pain conditions. Patients have asked many questions about medicinal cannabis so I’ve been researching the plant for about a year, but mostly online. I love Leafly because of how informative their site is but my patients aren’t very computer savvy and can’t handle the app.I can’t say enough good things about how awesome this book is.It’s so informative and really well put together. I love how easy it is to read and the photos in it really help. This book answers all of my questions and it’s easier than trying to find the info online. You can read the entire book but it’s so well organized that you can easily skip to the section you want if you have a specific question.This book would be a really nice gift to anyone that wants to learn general information on everything cannibis but also great for people that want to have a deeper understanding. It’s great for the recreational users but It’s perfect for people wanting to find the best strain for medicinal use, which is why I bought it.I recommend Leaflys website and app to everyone wanting cannabis information and I plan on recommending this book to all of my patients.

There are a variety of books on Cannabis nowadays. Each with it's on specialties and some, of course, trying to cover everything there is to know. What I was looking for was the latter.The problem with that is that some books can get WAY too detailed and science based, and some don't give enough information. "The Leafly Guide To Cannabis" falls exactly in between.It actually provides a great deal of information without getting overly scientific. Not that it doesn't have a great deal of information on the science side of cannabis, it just provides it in a much more understandable way. This book also touches on a variety of topics that I was looking to learn. I absolutely LOVE this book.

This book is very informative & helpful to new & existing users as well as the just plain curious. It can answer probably any question you can come up with. It's chapters are laid out in such a way that you can read it cover to cover if you wanted to while more experienced users might enjoy reading it as a quick reference guide. It goes over some history, types of plants, specific strains & how they would make you feel. There are many chapters on how to use it & even recipes in the edibles chapter. I feel this book has the potential to reach a wide range of demographics & will help readers make informed decisions when considering the use of marijuana.

I've only recently started consuming cannabis, and like just about everyone else, have lots of questions. This is a very thorough and educational book which has taught me a lot. Great read whether you are a beginner or veteran cannabis consumer. And even if you don't choose to consumer cannabis, a good read to help educate those who feel cannabis is bad!

This book has been such a help for a newbie like me. Hoping to find relief for chronic pain with cannabis plants and I had no idea where to begin. This book came at the perfect time and besides reading it from cover to cover, I keep it handy and refer to it often. Worth every penny.

This book was an easy and quick read. I was a little disappointed that their "recipe's" were sometimes incomplete, such as tincturing flower and what percentage of marc to everclear. Minor annoyance, really enjoyed the book and immediately had book borrowers waiting for me to pass it over. good read. The most interesting to me, was the dosing and effect based on temperature of a tabletop vaporizer. Loved that information- thank you.
