About the Author

Though no one in his family is Deaf or Hard of Hearing, Dr. Joseph Garcia has always been interested in gestural language and began studying American Sign Language (ASL) in 1975. He soon began using it extensively in his personal and professional life, and eventually became a Certified Interpreter. As he became more involved with the Deaf community, he soon noticed that hearing children of deaf parents started communicating with sign language at an earlier age than hearing children did with spoken language. Intrigued by this observation, he decided to research early childhood language acquisition and the part that sign language might be able to play in the process. He chose this topic for his graduate thesis in 1986. As his research proceeded, he uncovered a great deal of information about deaf children and their language development, but could find little on hearing children using ASL signs (i.e. hearing children of deaf parents, children with deaf siblings, etc..) He began investigating the results of using ASL signs as a method of early communication between hearing children and their hearing parents, and how signing affected the onset of expressive language in preverbal infants. What he learned was that babies who are exposed to ASL signs regularly and consistently, starting at six to seven months of age, can begin using signs effectively for meaningful two-way communication by the eighth or ninth month. They will also clearly understand the meaning of the signs quite some time before they actually initiate them on their own. During the last 30 years, Joseph was principal investigator for 109 private research grants. He has developed teaching and training materials for youth-related projects in the health care industry. He was appointed to and served two years on the Alaska Governor's Committee on Employment of The Disabled. He has continued to be active in the Deaf community. Dr. Joseph Garcia is the author of the definitive book on signing with your baby and baby sign language using ASL signs, called, "Sign with your Baby."

My father had a couple friends who were deaf, so I grew up seeing sign language used, so when I heard about teaching babies how to sign, I bought this book. I started using ASL with my son at 9mo, and at 4yo we still sign! I've seen other books that use non-ASL sign language, and that seems quite silly to teach your child a language that isn't official, especially seeing that my son still uses some of the signs he's learned.This book was very easy to read and use, and is perfect for anyone who hasn't had any experience with signing. I've given this book to 4 couples as baby shower presents, and they've loved it.I firmly believe that using sign language with my son before he could speak reduced the "terrible twos," because it gave him a way to communicate his needs and wants to us. We used signing in conjunction with speaking, and siging didn't hinder his speach development at all. In fact, I think it helped him start talking sooner. A friend of mine started signing with her daughter at 2yo who DID have speech development problems, and this actually helped reduce her daughter's frustration while they did speech development "exercises."

I purchased this book for my two grandchildren when they were 6 months old. One lives in Texas & the other lives in Alabama so we were able to see 2 different families put this book to use. Both girls began signing back to their parents within 2 months for "milk," "juice", & "more." They are now both 15 months old and I just had the opportunity to spend the past week with one of the girls. I was absolutely amazed to see how she has learned to communicate with sign language. Both mothers say this book should be on every expectant parent's wish list and if you put forth the effort to teach you baby to sign the rewards will be tremendous.

My niece loves it. Teaching her son sign language because I am deaf.

The whole concept of being able to have meaningful communication with your baby before language develops is so important. A parent longs to be capable of understanding needs and observing the environment with their baby/toddler. How rewarding to find something simple that really helps that social interchange take place early.

So, all you busy parents out there--this is a good and user-friendly manual. The biggest issue is for the busy mom and dad to find the time to read it, learn it, then teach it. I haven't looked at the other books out there, however, this one seems like an excellent resource to me. I got it for my son and wife. As of yet, it's still on the shelf...

Most of the signs were not for baby I was looking for something more baby friendly. More a story not many signs.

My daughter requested this as a "stocking" present at Christmas because some friends of hers had such a good time teaching their baby to sign. She wanted to do the same thing. It works, and it's super-thrilling to watch your baby pick up signing. As an interractive activity with your child, you can't beat it.

St. Alphonsus Liguori completed this spectacular book of Marian dogmas, dolors, and devotions in 1750 at the height of his powers:"The body of the book is divided into parts, the first of which consists of a phrase-by-phrase exposition of the Salve Regina, followed by prayers to Our Lady, a series of shorter tracts on various Marian feasts, dolors, virtues, and devotional practices.... St. Alphonsus's approach displays a clearly thought-out method of presentation that provides a strong measure of internal unity. Most of the parts that make up the Glories of Mary follow a fourfold method of (1) theme, (2) exposition, (3) example, and (4) prayer. This method immerses his readers in the tradition of the Church and encourages them to think the great thoughts the saints have thought about Mary, to read how others have tried to express their love for her, to pray as they have prayed, and, in doing so, to develop a lasting devotion to the spiritual Mother of all believers. Because it used nearly throughout the entire work, the method also serves to bind the various parts together and gives the reader a clear idea of what to expect as he or she moves from one part to the next."See also Mystical City of God, and Introduction to the Devout Life.

St. Alphonsus Liguori (1696 - 1787) uses very intense language in this long love letter to the Blessed Virgin Mary. It's a work of beauty and devotion, with stories and legends meant for the edification of people from another place in time; parts of "The Glories of Mary" may not resonate with some modern ears, but it resonated with mine. Although there are serious (and very excellent) Church teachings scattered throughout, it is not fundamentally a theologic or apologetic work: it was written more to move the heart than the mind.There are 7 parts to the unabridged edition I'm reviewing (Liguori Publications; Revised edition October 1, 2000):1. Line by line commentary on the Salve Regina2. Prayers to Our Lady (including The Rosary of Our Lady's Sorrows, covered in more depth in Part 4)3. Sermons on the Principle Feasts of Our Lady4. The Sorrows of Mary5. The Virtues of the Blessed Virgin Mary6. Practices of Devotion in Honor of the Blessed Virgin Mary7. Further ExamplesSt. Alphonsus follows a four-step formula in covering most of the material: (1) theme, (2) exposition, (3) example, and (4) prayer. He introduces a topic, develops it in depth using the devotional writings and sayings of the Fathers, Doctors, and saints of the Church, and then provides a story or two to illustrate his point, and a specific prayer for Our Lady's grace pertaining to the particular topic.As mentioned earlier, this is primarily a work of devotion and therefore not the book I'd give a Protestant to explain the Catholic veneration of Mary; just as I would not give "The Imitation of Christ" to an atheist to explain the rational underpinnings of Christianity. This is the book you read after the light goes on and you realize that for Christ to be King, His mother Mary has to be Queen. That's the way God chose to do it.If you're Protestant and want to try reading this book with an open mind, you have to have a proper rational foundation for the veneration Catholics give Mary. It's vital to understand that there are three modes of veneration or worship we, as creatures, can render. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, these are latria, dulia, and hyperdulia. Latria is addressed directly to God. It is superior, absolute, supreme worship, "the sovereign worship due to God alone"; addressed to a creature it would become idolatry. When worship is addressed indirectly to God - when its object is the veneration of martyrs, angels, or saints - it is called dulia. Veneration of the Blessed Virgin, who has a "supereminent" rank among saints, is called hyperdulia. Dulia and hyperdulia are given, therefore, with the knowledge that we are offering it *to* God *through* the creature: praising God's creation in this framework has always and forever been but praise for God Himself.For those outside the Church who put little stock in its whole Deposit of Faith, and choose to use only a part of it - the holy books chosen and approved by that same Church, otherwise known as the Bible - there absolutely is a basis for venerating Mary. I'll explain just one of them here, but if you really have a heart to find out more, there are plenty of books and resources on the subject.In Chapter 1 of Luke, we have the Annunciation: Mary is full of grace; she is highly favored by the Lord. So highly favored in fact that the Holy Spirit will come upon her and the Son of God will be incarnate in her womb. The implications of this are staggering:* All of Jesus' humanity - his DNA - comes from Mary.* Jesus, the ultimate source of all grace, whom God could have formed from the dust as he did Adam for his human nature, instead comes to us through Mary - she was chosen to be the channel through which comes all grace.* God honors Mary like no other creature; as He must: it is his own Commandment (the fourth.)* Remember what Jesus' saliva mixed in mud did for the blind man; Mary's very blood coursed through the Son of God, thereby consecrating her as no other creature, not even the Angels in Heaven.* She was without Original Sin, protected by the Fall at the moment of her conception: she had to be, as the Son of God could not be made of flesh that was at any time held captive by Satan. Why would any Protestant want to refute this point? It only impugns Christ to say or think otherwise.* The Holy Spirit is married to Mary in a mystical but very real manner (unless you would prefer to believe He would impregnate her out of wedlock), and the Song of Songs is to be read, on one level, in this light.* The Mother of God is a Queen; for who else gives birth to a King but a Queen?There are many more conclusions you could draw from this one scene in Luke on the fact of the incarnation. There are other scenes, especially the Wedding Feast at Cana in John. Once you begin to follow these threads you will, with prayer, eventually be led to the truth of the Catholic understanding of Theotokos.

Again, I have to say this is a wonderful, classic writing of St. Alphonsus, perhaps one of the best then and now.Written to enlighten Catholics about the greatness of the Mother of God, Mary, as a strong defense against the heretics of those times.It still is a need in our days, to have a master book of apologetics at hand. I recommend this book as a valuable one to read more than once, over and over! Such was his love for Our Mother!

This book is a must-read for EVERYONE! Also, this is a very good edition. It includes a Lourgori homily for every Marian feast day of the year which I think is awesome

My 11-year old son read this and was so touched and inspired by Malala's story. He normally only likes to read sci-fi, so I was shocked when he came back to me after reading the book with tears in his eyes, saying how grateful and inspired this book was for him. Nothing has ever moved him the way this story did. I highly recommend this story to any Tweens and teens. It is sure to inspire empathy and understanding.

I checked the audiobook out from the library, forgetting that I had bought the ebook when it was on sale... because I'm that sort of person. As amused and annoyed as I was with myself when I realized this, I actually ended up getting a better experience with the book this way. Malala speaks at the beginning and end of the book, and there's her UN speech as well. So, the audio version is definitely worth listening to.It's pretty emotional, hearing about how so many children in Pakistan are unable to be educated because their poor and/or female. I think it was very important of her to point out that the biggest issue with the ignorance there is because of this lack of education. These people are studying their holy text, but aren't understanding the words. That's something to be said of all religions. It's scary what happens when the uneducated come into power and twist a holy book to their desires. And knowing she stood up for her education despite the threats, she is amazing. Truly.I introduced my 5 year old son to the story of Malala last year, we own a couple picture books about her. I wanted him to know how important it is for all people to be given the opportunity to be educated. Also, I want to raise him to understand that there is no type of person better than another - people of all races, religions, genders, etc. all deserve the same opportunities.To me, the worst part of this was knowing there was a period of time when her father regretted letting her choose an education over her safety. I cannot even imagine the grief her parents went through.I've been reading a lot of non fiction lately, and I've noticed there is a lot of rambling in them. This book didn't have that. It is a fascinating story and I am so glad she lived through being shot. I wish I could afford to go to her talk in Houston, I expect it is going to be great.

In her autobiography, "I Am Malala: The Girl Who Stood Up for Education and Was Shot by the Taliban", Malala Yousafzai tells not only her own story, but that of other people who stood up in their own way for education or against oppression. She argues for the value and power of education again and again, making it clear that it is the most powerful weapon against terrorism or extremism.Malala writes, "'Why don't they want girls to go to school?' I asked my father. 'They are scared of the pen,' he replied" (pg. 118). Further, "The Taliban could take our pens and books, but they couldn't stop our minds from thinking" (pg. 146). Countering the Taliban's claim that education threatens their view of the world, Malala writes, "Education is neither Eastern nor Western, it is human" (pg. 162). She also articulates a place for women's rights in the Muslim world, writing, "...We want to make decisions for ourselves. We want to be free to go to school or to go to work. Nowhere is it written in the Quran that a woman should be dependent on a man. The word has not come down from the heavens to tell us that every woman should listen to a man" (pg. 219). Malala concludes, "Peace in every home, every street, every village, every country - this is my dream. Education for every boy and every girl in the world. To sit down on a chair and read my books with all my friends at school is my right. To see each and every human being with a smile of happiness is my wish" (pg. 313).Though the basics of her story are well-known, everyone should read Malala's autobiography for the insight she offers into the role of geopolitics in creating an opportunity for the Taliban and other extremists to seize power. Education is the strongest weapon against them and knowledge of how they gained they power can be used to prevent it from happening again. If you want a reference text, do not buy this. I am sorry I did. To me, it is worse than useless, because it contains only half the information contained in the previous (5th) edition. As a result, if I have a patient care quandary and need detailed information, I need to rely on the previous edition (or better, other texts). Then, I need to try to find what little has been added and updated in this edition. By abridging a good reference text, this continues a terrible tradition of recent American Psychiatric Association publishing, whereby the most recent editions of its Textbook of Psychopharmacology (Schatzberg) and Textbook of Child and Adolescent Psychiatry (Dulcan) have all been severely abridged. What were decent reference texts are now survey or review texts - without being identified as such. These texts may be useful for medical students or prospective examinees wanting to read through for a review, but they are NOT suitable for practicing psychiatrists. One hopes that the American Psychiatric Association is not intentionally trying to dumb down the practice of psychiatry, but that seems to be an inevitable consequence of what is not just an APA mistake but their ongoing policy and practice. I would throw all of those texts away - except that I hate to destroy books - and paid good money for them.

Don’t waste your money. Since the publication of DSM-5, the APA has published updated versions of several textbooks. I have purchased 3. The textbook of psychiatry, textbook of psychopharmacology and the textbook of neuropsychiatry and clinical neuroscience. I have previous editions of all 3. All 3 of the newer editions have been cut down in size and scope, between 39 to 60%. They are more appropriately described as primers, books for beginners. Very shallow. Another way to put is to say they have been “dumbed down”. They are no longer sources of useful information for practicing psychiatrists. The textbook of psychopharmacology was especially disappointing; it doesn’t provide enough details that it can used to guide prescribing.

Not as detailed as Kaplan and Sadock's Synopsis. I have a copy of both books. Some topics are not covered in details in this book but nevertheless, a useful book. For example, Delusional disorder, is barely covered and there is pretty much nothing and no treatment suggestion of the condition. I had to go to Kaplan and Sadock's Synopsis to find better coverage on the topic. For the price, you would think that they would do a better job. The text is well written and well organized, however. DSM-5 all the way. But not worth the heavy price tag. The book can be read cover to cover without much difficulty. Not as intimidating as Kaplan and Sadock's Synopsis in that regard. I strongly suggest buying the question book, as well. The learning is much more fun that way, with both books together. hope this review helps. Good luck.

About the Author

American Youth Football, Inc. (AYF), established in 1996, is a support-services organization dedicated to giving back to communities by promoting the wholesome development of young people through their association with exemplary adult leaders in the sport of American football. AYF is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation that provides support services, scholarships, grants, community programs, and tournaments to its member organizations, which service over one million members in 50 states and several countries worldwide. Joe Galat is president and founder of AYF. As a college player, Joe captained the Miami University (Ohio) football team, was an All-Mid-American Conference selection, and was named Outstanding Student Athlete in his senior year. He went on to coach at all levels of the sport, including the National Football League (New York Giants and Houston Oilers) and the Canadian Football League (Montreal Alouettes and British Columbia Lions) at the professional level, and Miami University, Yale University, University of Kentucky, and Youngstown State University at the college level. He has participated in youth football clinics in the United States, Canada, and Mexico, and throughout Europe and Russia. Joe resides in Miami, Florida.
