About the Author

John Covach (Professor of Music, University of Rochester and Eastman School of Music) received his Bachelor of Music (1983), Master of Music (1985), and PhD (1990) in music theory from the University of Michigan. He was also a Fulbright student in Vienna, Austria, in 1987–88. The recipient of several teaching awards and citations, Professor Covach teaches theory and analysis as well as courses in popular music. Since 1993, he has taught large lecture courses on rock at University of North Texas, University of North Carolina–Chapel Hill, and University of Rochester, and has lectured across North America and Europe. He is coeditor of Understanding Rock (Oxford 1997), American Rock and the Classical Music Tradition (Harwood 2000), and Institutions, Traditions, and American Popular Music (Harwood 2000). His extensive writings on twentieth-century music, popular music, and the philosophy of music have appeared in numerous books and journals. Professor Covach also maintains an active career as a performing and recording musician.Andy Flory (Carleton College), a Motown expert, assisted John Covach at UNC Chapel Hill in teaching one of the largest rock history courses in the world. I bought the kindle edition because I am able to adjust the font on kindle books. Even with glasses I have a hard time reading. Unfortunately this is the only kindle book I've bought that doesn't allow you to adjust the font. I'm struggling through the print addition, if you need a larger font don't buy this one.

Considering how I purchased this fairly expensive brand new 5th edition copy of this text I was really disappointed to realize that it is missing the card with a registration code for access to digital resources. Is there anyway to access this that I don't know about? Or can this situation be remedied?

The book moves from research done at these parks to the straits of Georgia where the author relocates to study the whales in their native habitat. From this vantage point the ecological disaster of the salmon fish farms is described that will persuade you to never buy farmed fish. If you are interested in learning more about the social life and the communications of killer whales in a book that is a good read then this one is for you

To experience this book is like hearing the blood pump throuth Alexandra Morton's veins. She IS the words embodied here. If you've ever wondered what it is to really feel a part of Nature's wide family, read this book. I enjoyed this book tremendously. It was educational, interesting, and fun to read. It's terribly sad what the Salmon farms and their pollution have done to waters once teeming with life. If the Government's of the world had a lick of sense they would shut them all down. Cheap Salmon isn't worth the destruction up and down the food chain. At some point we are going to have to decide what's more important, Corporations making more money,or life on this planet.(including ours) I know which side I am taking. Thank you Ms. Morton for taking the time to write this fascinating book.

This is the autobiography (so far) of whale researcher Alexandra Morton who came to the remote Broughton Archipelago in 1984 to study orcas and was herself woven by nature into the warp and woof of that amazing place. While telling a fascinating story the book imparts a great deal of knowledge in so painless a manner that we hardly notice. We learn, for example, that there are three kinds of orcas: "residents," who eat mostly fish; "transients" who eat mostly seals and sea lions; and "offshores" who--nobody knows for sure--may well eat mostly sharks. Though whales, both captive and free, are the stars of this story, the real star is the Broughton itself with its myriad islands and channels, its sunny summer breezes and howling winter storms. With so few people living in the Broughton, the BC government pillages its islands with clearcuts, and both levels of government cooperate to pollute its waters with open netcage salmon farms. Courageous residents fight a running battle to protect the wild coast and wild fish they love from the blindness of bureaucrats and the greed of multinational corporations. This wonderful story, which is all true, will make you cry for the ocean, and at the same time renew your hope in the power of courageous people to change the world. If you have a kayak, go and paddle through the Broughton that Alexandra and her friends are fighting to save for us. You might even be able to help.

I didn't realize until I read the book how drawn I am to marine biology esp. whales. She starts in Malibu with Dr. Lilly and moves to the old Marineland where she listens herself and ends up on Vancouver Island where pods were just beginning to be studied.I expected something more New Age. She sticks to well-documented ideas about orca's social behavior. When she feels things beyond what is scientificly proved, she says that this is what she felt and you feel for someone who has devoted this much time and thought to these animals her observations are not inappropriate. This is now one of my favorite books.

This boom was recommended to me by my husband and I'm very glad I read it. I learned so.much about the whale and their environment from reading Alex's words. the section on fish farming made me particularly angry. We owe earth a more responsible treatment. Thanks Alex, for sharing your work.

Mrs. Morton describes in infinite detail her life exploring and researching the orcas of the Canadian northwest. This is an autobiography of her life, her experiences, and her research. Very interesting, at times heartbreaking, and ending as uplifting and hopeful. I highly recommend this book!

Eric Schlosser, an award-winning journalist, opens his ambitious and ultimately devastating exposé with an introduction to the iconoclasts and high school dropouts, such as Harlan Sanders and the McDonald brothers, who first applied the principles of a factory assembly line to a commercial kitchen. Quickly, however, he moves behind the counter with the overworked and underpaid teenage workers, onto the factory farms where the potatoes and beef are grown, and into the slaughterhouses run by giant meatpacking corporations. Schlosser's incisive history of the development of American fast food indicts the industry for some shocking crimes against humanity, including systematically destroying the American diet and landscape, and undermining our values and our economy. The first part of the book details the postwar ascendance of fast food from Southern California, assessing the impact on people in the West in general. The second half looks at the product itself: where it is manufactured (in a handful of enormous factories), what goes into it (chemicals, feces) and who is responsible (monopolistic corporate executives). In harrowing detail, the book explains the process of beef slaughter and confirms almost every urban myth about what in fact "lurks between those sesame seed buns." Given the estimate that the typical American eats three hamburgers and four orders of french fries each week, and one in eight will work for McDonald's in the course of their lives, few are exempt from the insidious impact of fast food. Throughout, Schlosser fires these and a dozen other hair-raising statistical bullets into the heart of the matter. The reason I chose this book because it uncovers the horrors behind fast food besides the obvious health implications fast food has on people. I also chose it because it can relate to health class. I can talk my students about how easy it is for E-coli to develop and spread. All it takes is one time of not cleaning you knives or cutting board to get it. I can also talk to them about the importance of finding foods that are home grown by a farmer and doesn’t have any pesticides in it. Fresh meat, vegetables and fruits are healthier than processed food. This book relates so well with health implications because if other countries are gaining weight because of our fast food than fast food is the problem. We should try to stay away from it as much as possible if we want to live long and healthy lives.

Unlike the restaurants and food preparatory processes discussed, the statistics and case studies of Fast Food Nation are palatable. The book succeeds in taking a complex industry, introducing the reader to its history in the context of American industrial development, and disassembling it out by its major components. One of the more memorable sections of the book focuses on fast food employees, the growing standardization of their roles over time, and the extreme measures some companies pursue in order to avoid any consequences of hiring an inconsistent, unreliable workforce. Fast Food Nation makes a great effort to identify many of the cultural, personal, and political issues in play within the fast food industry, though it does little to incite change. If the book presented concrete solutions, I do not recall many of them, it works better as a highlight reel of atrocity rather than a meditation on possible improvements. I read the book in 2012, 11 years after Fast Food Nation was originally published but I have failed to see any of the changes highlighted in the book taking hold. Democracy still appears to be smothered by special interests and lobbying, and despite other media emphasizing the horrifying state of our food industry we seem stuck in that same feedback loop. Ultimately Fast Food Nation will open your eyes to many of the issues in the fast food industry, though perhaps the greatest lesson is how much more it will take to actually incite change.

The purpose of this book, about the fast food industry, is best summarized by the author within the introduction: "I do not mean to suggest that fast food is solely responsible for every social problem now haunting the United States. In some cases (such as the malling and sprawling of the West) the fast food industry has been a catalyst and a symptom of larger economic trends. In other cases (such as the rise of franchising and the spread of obesity) fast food has played a more central role. By tracing the diverse influences of fast food I hope to shed light not only on the workings of an important industry, but also on a distinctively American way of viewing the world."This book recounts the history behind the uprising of fast food to become a dominant force in our modern society. However, what most of us do not know is : "what lies behind the shiny, happy surface of every fast food transaction". Eric goes on to investigate every aspect of the fast food industry: people, cattle, vegetables, health etc. The storytelling techniques that he uses throughout the book bring this expose to life. The stories are descriptive, personal and touching.A very educative and enlightening read, and a rude (much needed) awakening about the food industry in general and the fast food industry in particular.Below are key excerpts from the book that I found particularly insightful:"The history of the twentieth century was dominated by the struggle against totalitarian systems of state power. The twenty-first will no doubt be marked by a struggle to curtail excessive corporate power. The great challenge now facing countries throughout the world is how to find a proper balance between the efficiency and the amorality of the market.""Today's fast food industry is the culmination of those larger social and economic trends. The low price of a fast food hamburger does not reflect its real cost - and should. the profits of the fast food chains have been made possible by losses imposed on the rest of society. The annual cost of obesity alone is now twice as large as the fast food industry's total revenues.""The right pressure applied to the fast food industry in the right way could produce change faster than any act of Congress. The United Students Against Sweatshops and other activist groups have brought widespread attention to the child labor, low wages, and hazardous working conditions in Asian factories that make sneakers for Nike.""Nobody in the United States is forced to buy fast food. The first steps toward meaningful change is by far the easiest: stop buying it. The executives who run the fast food industry are not bad men. They are businessmen. They will sell free-range, organic, grass-fed hamburgers if you demand it. They will sell whatever sells at a profit. The usefulness of the market, its effectiveness as a tool, cuts both ways.""Whatever replaces the fast food industry should be regional, diverse, authentic, unpredictable, sustainable, profitable - and humble. It should know its limits. People can be fed without being fattened or deceived. This new century may bring an impatience with conformity, a refusal to be kept in the dark, less greed, more compassion, less speed, more common sense, a sense of humor about bran essences and loyalties, a view of food as more than just fuel. Things don't have to be the way they are. Despite all evidence to the contrary, I remain optimistic."
