Many Jewish homes pride themselves on their volumes of books in their libraries. Fortunately, there is a plethora of works published on Judaism and Torah so you can spend a lifetime reading! However, if you only need an introduction to one of the most central themes of Jewish life (the Torah) and/or you need a readable, but thorough presentation of the Torah from the perspective of an Orthodox rabbi, this is a book you should definitely invest in. Rabbi Menken discusses how the Torah is the foundation of Judaism and can preserve the Jewish nation for however long they choose to follow it. Also presented are short (but enlightening) responses to issues such as modernity and validity when apply Torah principals to daily life. Of course the history and contents of the Torah itself are discussed and at the end there is an added bonus of discussions of the Torah portions week by week.Despite the cartoon-like font and format of the book (just the same as the other "Everything..." books), there really is a wealth of information present. Especially for those who are teenagers and/or new the concepts of Torah-true Judaism (whether you plan on living them out or not). It is easy to recommend this book over much older and well known works simply because of it's lucid format and inexpensive price.

The book arrived in a timely fashion and was as described. Would order again from this seller. Very pleased with the transaction.

What a delight! This text makes understanding Torah easier for beginners, either adult beginners and for Bar or Bat Mitzpha students. The text is too simple for scholars. Every non scholarly student of Torah should read and use as a guide to Torah.

This is the third book I have read in the past two years on the history of the Jewish people and the Jewish faith. After my daughter converted to Judaism one of my Jewish friends thought it might be helpful to me in gaining a better understanding of Judaism - and so it has. For me, the book can be separated into four distinct parts:The first six chapters concentrate on explaining the Jewish faith - the Torah, the Oral Law, Kabbalah, Mysticism, and Meaning, Maimonides "Thirteen Principles, and Torah Principles for all Humanity" which establish the basic beliefs on what is to follow. The next seven chapters follow the history of the Jewish people and their faith to the end of the period of the Ghettos which had been forced on the Jewish people by the Christian kingdoms of Western Europe. This part describes the Chain of Transmission from Moses receiving God s word on Mount Sinai, the development of the Mishnah, the Talmud, the diaspora to Babylonia after the suppression of the Jewish faith by the Roman Emperors as a result of the tumult of the second great Jewish revolt, and from there the slow movement to Europe after the collapse of the Western empire ,and the decline of the Eastern one. It continues with detailed information of the commentators and codifiers of the High Medieval period, the Kabbalah and Chassidic movements, and the development of Yeshivos and Mussar when the Jewish people started to emerge from their ghettos in Europe. There are three chapters which cover the Enlightenment and Modern Jewish Movements, the survival of Torah during the Holocaust, and a discussion on Modern Challenges and Torah. This was an imprtant section for me because I was very confused about the various Jewish movements, how their beliefs differ, and their position on the creation of the State of Israel. The five final chapters comprise a study for each section of the five books of the written TorahIt took me over three months read this book and to complete my studies of its contents but, of course, what is that to those Jewish scholars who have spent a lifetime studying the Written Torah, the Mishnah, the Talmud, and the important Jewish commentaries on these works? But I do think I have done the book justice!. It was very helpful that there is a dedicated Everything Torah website within the Torah.org website itself, which has discussion groups on questions of other readers. It was through that website that I really started to concentrate my studies on the lessons of the Written Torah. If you are not Jewish, and you want to gain some understanding of the Jewish faith and philosophy, it is in these final five chapters that you can start to do so.In order to grasp the mountain of detail provided in this book, I found it absolutely necessary to check out the Net for additional information on the various Jewish leaders mentioned in the book, and to set up a workfile for detailed notes on people, definitions of words, the Jewish calendar, commentaries on the Torah, the structure of the Mishnah, etc. which will serve me as an easy look up reference system in any of my future studies. In comparing this book with World Perfect (by Rabbi Ken Spiro) and The History of the Jews (by Paul Johnson ), I have concluded that while they are all on the same topic, they each have a different focus, and so are complementary to one another. All of them have helped me gain a better understanding of the somewhat unfamiliar culture of my son-in law s family and circle of friends, which was my prime motivation for reading these books in the first place. In the process I also gained a great respect for Jewish philosophy and a respect for the Jewish people who have experienced so many the trials and tribulations over the past 2500 years. In addition and very important to me, these books have also strengthened my background knowledge for my studies in the history of the ancient civilizations of the Middle East and Mediterranean basin (in particular those of the Sumerians, Babylonians, Hittites, Assyrians, Egyptians ), the later ones of Greece and Rome, the development of early Christianity and its impact on the Roman Empire and the barbarian states which came into being after the collapse of the Western Empire.I am very happy to recommend this book to other people who, like myself, have a desire to have a better and more complete understanding of Jewish philosophy and the Jewish faith.

I recommend this book to people who can admit to themselves that they don't really know that much about Orthodox Judaism. If you think Orthodox Judaism is based on a particular outfit that you wear, you're wrong. If you think that Orthodox Judaism is a cult, you're mistaken. Most reporters who write about things that Orthodox Jews do and say do not grasp the basic premises. Nobody says you have to like it, but it's important to be fair and objective about this as anything else.I discovered Orthodox Judaism in college, over 30 years ago. I was a military brat,so I spent my childhood in the rural south, near Marine bases in North Carolina and Georgia. On my mother's side, we are DAR, daughters of the American Revolution. My great-grandmother still had a working farm when I was a child. Our family moved into the urbanized mainstream when I was 13 but I didn't know there were any Children of Israel in the world until I was 16. I thought that the Jewish people were just another ancient tribe from the Bible. The first Jew I met,at a teen sorority event, told me that Jews were the smartest people in the world. The reason, he explained, was because Jews knew about triconosis before anyone else did and avoided the unhealthy meat of a pig.Fortunately, when I went to college there were Orthodox Jews whom I could watch. Seeing Orthodox life in action is so very different from any book or any individual person's explanation.Since then, I've lived a life in the Orthodox Jewish community, raised children, experienced grandparenting, lived in Israel and participated in Jewish communal life at every level.Naturally, I've had hundreds of conversations with friends, relatives and professional colleagues about the reason for my chosing this limiting and demanding life. I'm always amazed by the knowledge gap. Most non-Orthodox Jews and the rest of the population simply don't know Torah is, how it works or what we're doing with all those rituals. For 30 years or so, when people ask me if there is just one book that they could read, the choices are either To Be a Jew by Donin or Eight Questions People Ask about Judaism by Joseph Telushkin and Dennis Praeger.I think I'm going to suggest Menken's book in the future. It offers the Orthodox "side of the story" on issues ranging from divine revelation, Kabbalah, Jewish chosenness, to a brief Bible commentary.Religion is a hot button issue now. Knowledge is better than prejudice. Since 9/11, Americans have been compelled to look at religious fundmentalism.People who live near Orthodox Jewish communities and wonder about them should too. But above all, people who find the subject of religion interesting should be reading Menken.Looking at the New Testament, I think it's clear that Orthodox Judaism is the life that Jesus lived. It's an ancient religion, it isn't simple, but Menken offers a doorway to understanding.Osnat
